Safe Haven Law

Parents who do that to their children don't deserve to breathe.

stupid parents...if you're too lazy to take care of the kid then you shouldn't have been allowed to breed in the first place.

I think that without details we can’t read much into this; the mother could have had a mental break down and needs help. I think the safe haven law is a pretty good one, I’ve read lots of stories of child abuse recently in the UK including one too horrific to mention and I think that a having a place where a parent can hand a child over and say they can’t cope anymore (before their stress and anger turns towards the child, the safe haven law doesn’t offer exemption from child abuse charges) without the fear of prosecution is a good one.
We all like to be judge jury and executioner when it comes to condemning bad parents but you never really understand just how tough it can be until you are one. The woman in this article clearly needs help and now that she’s brought herself to the attention of authorities she can be medically assessed. It’s a better outcome than her doing nothing and ending up topping herself through the shame and stress of not coping

There is nothing in this world that anyone would ever be able to say to me to justify abandoning your child, but I appreciate trying to look at it from a different perspective.

Yeah, gotta love my state's loophole-ridden safe haven law.
The best one was 2 weeks ago, a dad dropped off 9 of his 10 children, ages 2 to 16 (the 18 year old daughter was not left). His wife had died in childbirth on the 10th kid, and he'd lost his job.
Luckily they put those kids with relatives (the dad never asked his family for any help).

Does anyone here know what kind of job would help a single parent raise ten children? Or Do you know of any other way of raising ten children? Just curious because I can't think of anything other than having other family members help you out.

You can do it on any decent job its just a matter of managing money correctly. I'm sure with 10 kids most people would qualify for gov. assistance.
Money should never be a reason to abandon children. But money should factor into the decision to have 10 kids at some point. One would think.

why does anyone need to have 10 kids in the first place? That's irresponsible in my mind.

It's also irresponsible to have more kids than you are likely to ever be able to support.

my gf's life plan has 4 kids in it...no thanks...2 is fine by me.

I saw the story about the 9 kids on the Today show the other day. I think they said the Dad was about to be homeless and didn't want the kids to be homeless. It's too bad he didn't ask his family for help first. The law is there for women who can't take care of their babies, they drop them off instead of killing them. Obviously this guy didn't want to or felt he couldn't burden someone in his family w/ taking on 9 kids and felt that if they were to continue to live with him their lives would be worse than not having a father. Whatever his reasoning was, placing his children somewhere he knew they would be safe is a lot better than trying to live on the streets w/ them.

The law also states the 'child' is in danger. Not having enough money does not qualify as 'danger' per the way the law is written.

We had a woman drive here from Michigan, with her sister and mother, and dropped off her 13 year old son, a packed suitcase, and $10...at a hospital a mile from my house.

Other then this causing some abandoment issues for the child-- the kids just might be better off. I personally would rather see a "drop-off" then a dead child. Have seen that one to many times.....

I also agree that they should be allowed to breed....

Don't you mean shouldn't?
