Ryan's Journal

Guess it must be time for me to be less stupid, now. All in all, squatting 6 days/wk for the last fortnight has been successful at kickstarting my squat strength back up, as evidence by the 10kg PB for high bar squats. Muscles have been rather unsore throughout the experience, but knees have been getting less happy towards the end. I'm thinking that from here I'll continue on with 5x5 one day a week, 3x10 one day, and maybe some overhead squats or snatch balances another day. Then again, a week from now my schedule's going to be dramatically changing, so we'll see what happens.

Legs showing fatigue from recent stupidity is what I am guessing on deadlift. To be expected on first week following, strength will come back fast with the increased endurance.
I take it you have a well structured plan for this next block.

I don't have much of a plan at all for the next 5 weeks. This week is all about getting uni stuff done before Friday. Then next week is my first week of teaching. Once I've gotten into a groove with that, I'll be able to assess what I have the time and energy for, and come up with a plan for the 3 weeks of teaching following that. Since my deadlift is horribly behind like my squat was a couple weeks ago, I'm thinking I might go stupid in a similar way on deadlifts while maintaining (and hopefully progressing slightly) my squats and bench press. If I ever try anything stupid like this on bench press, there's no hint of irony about calling it stupid -- it actually is stupid. I know with high confidence that my shoulders can't take more than 3 days per week of benching...unless the shoulder issues I got from Smolov Jr were from low bar squats rather than benching. Oh dear, I seem to have just raised a question with myself that I want to know the answer to. I foresee a very stupid future.

First day of answering to things like "Mr" and "sir" today. I had good plans to train afterwards. Then afterwards happened, and I concluded that today must be a rest day. My English prac teacher took the approach that we need more teachers, and so he should make this experience as positive for us as possible and only give us his best classes. My science prac teacher had a different approach. One of the girls in my Yr12 English class goes to church with me. That was an unexpected surprise. It's a good thing I'm not facebook friends with her - that could look bad.

I taught adult ed years ago and remember being given the task of teaching life skills to a group with violent histories and tendancies. The life skills teacher came out at break 1 shaking so they decided the to resort to sending in the power lifting IT tutor instead.
One of the guys doing the most to try intimidating sounded familiar and was one of the guys I knew from the metal club I used to attend. I had heard him saying how he used his reputation and a bit of suggestion to scare people. His face when I walked in was a picture, I had little trouble from that point.

Little bit evil. All this effort and I get a rating of a LITTLE bit evil!

Can't be bothered blogging. Yep, opening a new tab is too much effort right now. Today's session was pretty unintense.

Squats

10xBW
10x20kg
5x50kg
20x70kg

Deadlifts

3x10x70kg

Bench Press/Pull Ups

10x20kg/5xBW
20x50kg/8+7xBW -- Did 8 proper pull ups, and then jumped up and did eccentrics for the following 7.

For a second, I thought I was in my own thread.

I've had some good teaching experiences in the last 48 hours, having done my first real classes: one for Yr11 English and one for Yr10 Science. Yr10 Science today left me feeling really good, because I managed to get some normally disruptive students actually paying attention and enjoying the class.

A lot of education is understanding how to deal with the class in front of you. Too many teachers become lazy and treat every class as if it has the same people in it. While I understand curriculum constraints etc. I think there should be enough of the spark that makes teachers want to get the best out of their classes to merit putting in the extra effort.
I have been in classes where I have barely recognised the teacher from descriptions from others and realised that there were so many descriptions it got confusing. As a youngster I didn't get it but now I have done some teaching myself I do. They were all very good teachers, incredibly adaptable.

Last day of the week. I have classes all day today. Two of which I'm teaching in. I was up til 11:30 last night working on lesson plans, before I finally resolved to finish my Y11 English class by making my students analyse "Chinese Food" by Alison Gold.
