Well, I stumbled across this site by doing a search for weight loss forums. I'm a forum junky, but generally for cars and drag racing only. At Thanksgiving 2006 a bunch of us at work agreed that we should start a weight loss contest starting Jan 1 2007. The buy in was $50 and whomever loses the highest percentage of their starting weight wins the entire pot.

So, fast forward to Jan 1. Everyone weighs in. I step on the scale at my heaviest ever....244 lbs! I'm 29 yrs old, 5ft 9.5in and have a "thick" bone structure.

There's a total of 9 people in the contest for a pot of $450. That would buy some decent car parts!

Here's my "official" weight so far:
01/05/2007 244.0
01/08/2007 240.0
01/15/2007 235.0
01/22/2007 234.0
01/29/2007 228.0
02/05/2007 227.0
02/12/2007 225.0

I weighed again yesterday at 223 lbs, but it's not official for the contest because we don't weigh in "officially" until Monday. So total lost so far is 21 lbs in 7 weeks, which is an average of 3 lbs per week.

The contest runs from Jan 1 - April 2. My goal is to get down to 200 lbs.
Here's what I'm doing to achieve that:

45-60 minutes per day of intense cardio (elliptical, 80% of max heart rate). I have been doing this for 2 weeks. I should have started at the beginning, but I didn't.
1800-2000 calories (no "white" carbs, no sugar, no sodas, lean protein, lots of fresh veggies and fruits)

I've been tracking my breakdown of calorie intake. Here's what it's averaging:

Average Calories per day: 1884
Fat: 23%
Carbs: 50%
Protein: 27%

I'm starting to see my heart rate doesn't get up as high anymore when i do the cardio. I'll keep at the elliptical for another 2 weeks and then switch to the bike, treadmill or rowing machine. Something to change up my workout.

Anyway, after the contest is over, I'm going to focus my efforts strictly on lowering my body fat percentage via a combination of weight training and cardio.

Sounds like you are doing GREAT! I too am a forum junkie, but I actually am on this forum the most now.

Have you thought about incorporating strength training into your program as well? Also, there is something I learned about on this board that is really great and supposed to boost fat loss, HIIT, High Intensity Interval Training which you can incorporate 2-3 20 minute sessions into your weekly cardio and that might give you a boost in your efforts. There is some good info on HIIT at bodybuilding.com and there is a thread or 2 in "The Harsh Truth" section.

Congrats on your success thus far, and welcome to the forum!

Update: My official weigh in for this week was on Monday 2/26 and I was at 222 for a total lost of 22 lbs in 8 weeks. Average of 2.75/week.

Today I weighed 221. Maybe by Monday next week I'll be at 220 for the official weigh-in! That's my goal anyway.

I've started eating Smart Ones meals for lunch and dinner. They aren't too bad. I also sqeeze in some raw vegetables too, cucumber or raw snap beans this week. I change up the veggie every week so I don't get sick of them!

I'm not so sure that I'll hit my goal weight of 200 lbs by 4/2 though. We'll see. I'm going to do a "cleansing" diet for the last 2 weeks of the competion to get all the toxins/etc...out of my system. It's very very low calorie (less than 1000 i believe), but only for a short time and is supposed to work wonders for helping in general health.

I really can't wait for this "weight" loss contest to be over so I can focus on strength training and "fat" loss instead. :)
