Rob's Journal

Well Starting on Monday, January 8th, My wife and I will be starting our new workout routine for 2007.

2006 was good for me, but not so good for the wife.

I will be doing the same routine, but with a more strict diet to lose the last of the fat.

My wife had zero results, so, she is trying something totally new and the same diet that I am going to eat.

Our biggest problem, is 3 kids with TONS of goodies for them, Time to switch them over to healthier foods with us.

I am already altering my diet getting ready for it. I am cutting drinking out to only special occasions, so is my wife.

Should be interesting.

I imagine your wife wont be eating the SAME as you right? Her portions will be less?

Dont let the kids dictate what goes in your pantry. Get them started on healthy habits so that they will have a better shot at adopting them and keeping them throughout life.

Good luck to you and your wife Rob.

Thanks Tony,

As for my wife, she is eating smaller portions, and better foods. Simply put. No more fast food and cutting back on the candy.

My wife worked out this morning and when she was done I came into work and I did my Strength routine. I started off light since I am comming back from a 4 week lay off, I figured I would ease into it this week....It felt good and I could feel the tightness from the time off.

My wife, did her turbo jam, this morning.

Day 1 is off and running :)

Rob I would highly recommend New Rules of Lifting. I just checked it out from the public library and its amazing. Dasha and I are both starting the program together. Day 1 (today) kicked my butt, and its only the "break in" phase.

Thanks Tony I will look it up and give it a go.

Day 2...

Wife completed her workout and a good breakfast,

I had a good breakfast and gettting my lunch ready (salad with chicken and cheese)

Today is Cardio for me, I will be teaching my son's (the 4 year old) soccer tam some basic dribbling skills, as best you can for a 4 year old :) with my Daughter (8 yr old) helping out since I have been coaching her since she was 4.

Nothing better then working out with small kids teaching them a sport. I will do my Spinning when I get home for my cardio routine.

I always wonder why parents who are trying to live a healthy lifestyle go out and by ding-dongs for the kids. What is it about kids bodies that don't need healthy food? If anything, they need healthy food MORE because of their development! If you force them to switch over now (because they can't go out and buy their own food) by time they're adults a lot of unhealthy sweets will seem "too sweet" and unnatural to them. The best way to keep them from struggling with their weight and lifestyle is to get them started. You are who teaches them what to eat.

What's wrong with Ding dongs? -.- I grew up on snacks like that as a kid and I'm ok. I think anything in moderation is ok. Little Debbie Snacks are a part of childhood...doesn't mean that their parents are depriving their little bodies of healthy food. Kaleigh gets ice cream every friday night!!! =O

Tell Anne, "You go girl!!" for me!! She's doing a great job!

Agreed 100% Kids need to grow up and be kids. Snacks like that in moderation are not a big deal. Kids are getting fatter younger these days from the parents that let them eat what they want, when they want and then shove them in front of the playstation and tv as a cheap babysitter because they don't want to get out and do things with them. Also, have you seen the school menus?

My son has his share of his kid snacks, but he also eats healthy dinners and healthy snacks and is limited on his PS@ and TV time to get some exercise in.

I agree totally we have the "goodies" in our house for our children, because they are kids.

My kids can have Ice cream after they finish their Homework, and eat their dinner with us as a family. They are allowed to have a snack after school. They are kids after all.

Speaking of Computer, on Nice days, my kids are forbidden on the Computer, they HAVE to go outside and play witht heir friends. Plus my son who is a computer genius, is only allowed on the PC as long as his grades are above a B for his weekly tests, If his Vocab, Spelling, or Math test fall below a B, he is banned from the PC until a A is brought home in that subject, which is usually the next test. (see-saw personality)

The point being is my wife can not have a Ice Cream every night as well, maybe once a week and she can't be getting McDonalds.

Siml, you sure the Ding Dong didn't go to your head?? ;)

Plus some of my kids favorite foods are Yogurt, carrots, tomatoes, Cucumbers, and Brocilli (of all things) These are normal snacks and well stocked in our fridge, But we do ahve Ice cream, cookies, and candy on hand for treats and friends.

thanks Tony, I will certainly look into getting the book this weekend!

As for my workout, I did my Spinning Routine last night for 45 min. I have a video made by Star trac with Jay Blanick (sp?) that video kicks but and is awesome for spinning...I really enjoy it. I plan on getting a new spinning bike when I finish basement this spring. But it was a good Cardio day, I almost forgot to do it, while hustling the kids around and coaching my son's soccer team....then right before my dinner I said, damn didn't do my Cardio, let me do that before I eat.....Done taken care of :) that's a WIN!

My wife today is doing her Turbo jam for day 3, so she is holding her own, I will be hitting the gym after work.

Breakfast was, Oatmeal and a banana with green tea, I will eat a apple shortly.

Lunch will be Chicken breast, with Romaine lettuce and some cheese sprinkled on with water. with a orange for Snack after that.

Not sure about dinner yet.

Oh BTW...

My current strength routine is.. feel free to Critique. I am not going to be the size arnold, but in good shape as opposed to a walking stick figure, or a walking stick figure with a belly :)

3x10 of...

bench Press
Stomach lifts (i think they are called) (dip stand;back to matt; lift legs to chest)
Triceps (pulldowns)
side latteral raises (dumbell)
Chest fly (dumbell)
Crunches on machine with weights
Military press
Lat pull downs
Shoulder lifts with Dumbells
Bicep curls
leg squats

Not that great because you're pushing movements far exceed your pulling movements. The only real pull movement is Lat Pulldown. But you have bench, mil press, and fly.

I would do this:
BOR
Bench Press
Mil Press
Lat Pulldown
Squat
Romanian Deadlift

Thats a 1 to 1 ratio of pushing and pulling. You can vary the exercise, but those are the movements you want.

BOR?? what does that stand for?

My problem is at my gym we do not have a standard "bench press bar" that I can use for the dead lift, we have a smith Machine, I tried it on that....Didn't fair to well, I will try it again with Lighter weight to get the rythem down but it felt akward and I didn't want to hurt my back.

Yea from reading "bits" fromt he book you suggest I saw that about equal Pull and Push movements.

What is the exercise called that you use the Rope handles off a Pulldown machine, you have your back to the machine you kind of go in a Semi Lunge position and pull it down over your head, from rear to front. I'll ahve to do some research.

thanks for the help, I figured I was "top heavy"

Today we woke up at 5:30am and my wife did her Turbo jam, I will be doing my spinning workout at 5PM when I get home from work.

For breakfast we had Egg whites on a whole wheat bagel with a slice of cheese. going to switch to just Wheat bread and egg whites, teh Bagel was to much and I only ate half.

Had a banana and a Apple for snack. drinking my Green tea.

For Dinner last night we had Steak with Onions and Snow peas. I cut down on the portion I would normally eat and had a glass of skim milk the water later on.

For lunch today I will have a salad with cheese and Chicken Breast, with Oil and vinegar, my favorite meal.

hey it is better to be a Wise ass then a Dumb ass!!!! so thanks!! :D

to good to resist Brandi! And I am sure the Moral majority would rather "watch" you!! hehe ;)

I will retain my #3 spot!!!!!!! WAHOO!

today, is a strength day and will be trying some of Tony's Idea's plus my other workourts....just adding to the mix :)

Today I had a cup of coffee, with Skim milk and 3 Sweet and lows, which is new for me, I would usually have 2/3 cups of cofee with SUGAR and HALF and HALF...so big change for me taste wise... :(

I will be having my oatmeal for breakfast shortly, and my salad, with Turkey and cheese, with Balsamic vinegar and olive oil (EVOO)

I ahve my array of Banana, Oranges, and Apples for "snack time', not sure which I will choose, had apple yesterday, I will probably go for the banana and a Orange after my lunch, love Oranges. :D

I drink a liter of Green tea EVERYDAY, straight up, nothing added. And at least a gallon of water everyday.

Did my spinning last night, which KICKED MY BUTT, but felt damn good, today is strength day, so I will bust into the gym downstairs around 4PM.

lol, MellowGAMan!
