Rho's Diary

Hi,

I hope you get better soon. Its really disapointing when you are doing well and then get a set back, but thats all it is and once your properly better you will soon get back into it.
When I was at school I used to get colds a lot, so I started taking a multivitamin tablet and that helped a lot.
Now that I exercise more I also take 500mg of vitamin C.
Seems to keep the bugs away quite well (touch wood and all that :) )
May not work for everyone, but it seemed to help me. At the time my diet was not so good, so maybe now that I am eating better I could do without the multivitamin.

Get well soon.:)

Hi Rho...aw girl I hope you're feeling better soon. I just wanted to say hello and I think that nasty cold/virus/flu needs to move on!

Aww, thanks guys - you're the best! I got loads of rest over the bank holiday weekend, although the weather didn't help. It's nearly summer here, technically, yet the weather reverted to prehistoric ice age conditions over the last few days. Freezing, accompanied by freezing rain.

Risty & Penfold, no, I haven't been taking any supplements. The only thing I've taken regularly is glucosamine, but then that's for my wonky knee joints so that doesn't count. I thought that a good diet made up for all the vitamins you need in your diet, and I remember I used to feel really bad when I took multivitamins (years ago now). I know I'll get better soon, and then I can return to the process of getting fit! I already miss the gym!

Hey Lukewarm, that's really sweet of you. I do feel better, although being at work today has stressed me out a bit. I'm off home shortly to suck some more bitter lemons and eat some more ginger (lord help me - the heat goes straight to my brain, I swear!) so I hope to catch up real soon.

Thanks guys - I'll be back real soon..

Lemon and ginger, ha... :)
Sure like the taste of both of those, but I'm not so sure if eating them as such is on my top 10 list. ;)
Glad to hear you're feeling better and hope to hear more!
Juliette

I'm happy you're feeling better, that's a bummer about the weather. Ick, freezing rain in May, well almost June? No wonder you're sick. I'd be huddled inside just because of the weather! Oh but I am always surprised when people say they leave their windows open, because if I left mine open, I'd be sharing my bed with lovebugs, palmetto bugs, moths...I'm grossing myself out. I'll stop, but anyways, try and have a nice day despite work and being ill. :hug2:

Sara - that's why you have screens on the windows! LOL.... moths won't get into a tiny screen with their big butts :p

Rho - it's true if you eat well that you could do without vitamins, but most people don't eat well enough to get what they need daily. I know I sure as hell don't! About the whole not feeling well, it just may have been the type... there's so many different brands and whatnot. But, it's purely up to you. I just think if you're getting sick a lot you're body is probably lacking some nutrients, you may not be getting enough sleep, etc etc. I hope you don't get sick again anytime soon!

Hi Rho~

I'm sorry to hear that you're ill. Hopefully it'll pass soon.

Yeah, the weather has gotten "yucky" here too in Northern California. It had been in the 80's, now it's overcast and in the 60's.

I prefer the cool weather though, so I'm not complaining.

Okey dokey. Have a good Wednesday :)

Hey Rho!! Sorry your not feeling well lately, it stinks when the weather doesn't give you enough sunshine to change your mood too. Okay, this is what I always suggest to all my friends and my sons. LOAD up on the VITAMIN C, yep you can never take to much C, if you do it will just pee out anyways. It works for me, I tell you what, I rarely get a cold and everyone around me is sick all the time. Including my hubby who refuses to do the C, like I tell him. LOL LOL of course. Well, it may not be the cure all, but it does help. And plenty of rest and water is a must, but I know your doing that. I really hope it gets better soon, it stinks being sick. **Here's a little throw of Good Health coming your way!!**:hug2: I'll check in on you later gator!!
Kim

The not-so-sick prodigal daughter returns..

Hey guys! It's so great to be back!

I'm actually on my way out to the gym (still trying to decide between a cardio or weight training workout) but I haven't updated in a while and it's been hanging on my mind..

Juliette, lemon and ginger may be great in recipes, but eating them on their own is the most disgusting thing ever - I think I can confidently say this now..

Lukewarm, I've been really careful over the last few days - I still take an umbrella and a cardigan with me everywhere I go, even if it's sunny. I remember once a few years back, when we had sun, rain and snow all in the same day... I guess that's what people mean by 'London weather'.. Thankfully there aren't too many bugs, so I have less to worry about on that score :)

Hey Risty, you're totally right. My body was lacking something, and it was sleep! Because of my exams I'd got into the routine of sleeping only around 6 hours, studying for most of the day, and going to the gym every single day for near 2 weeks. I continued with the daily workouts even when I went back to work even though I was leaving the office really late, so I ended up not getting enough sleep so I think my body just gave up on me. I remember my last workout (weight training) - I felt like I'd been beaten up at the end... Still, it's a good lesson for me to learn.

Hey cshani, good to know you're okay. (Will catch up on your diary when I get back).. I prefer the cool weather too - all this hot weather does is get me into a bad mood and give me heat rash.. And I come from a hot tropical country originally! Still, we get what we get, I suppose..

You're really funny Miss Ladybug - do the C?! It's good it works for you really well; the one thing I'm realising about my body (well, since I started on this journey) is that when I have too much or too little of something, my body complains..usually by my falling ill. I guess it just means I need to be more on top of things, and not just food - sleep as well.

Ok guys, as I said, I'll be back after my workout. I'm a little tempted to sit at home and start tomorrow, but a friend told me yesterday that I looked 'smaller', like I'd shrunk, so that's motivated me to get out there. The only thing I need to decide within the next half hour is whether to do a cardio or a weight training workout. Maybe cardio - my 10K walk is next Sunday.. Decisions, decisions..

I need to weigh myself as well...see exactly how much weight I've lost..Am I scared or what..

Hey, great to have you back here!
I hope your workout rocked and you bring good news from the weigh-in!! :D
Juliette

Hey, I'm glad you're going to go to the gym today and not tomorrow. The whole tomorrow thing is never a good thing, lol. My tomorrow's never came :p

About sleep, I agree, it's pretty important. I kinda feel like I may be getting sick, it's either that or allergies, it's hard to tell at first. I hope it's just allergies, but I know I haven't been sleeping well so it very well could be a cold. I guess I'll find out in a couple days which it is.

I hope you're feeling awesome and not the least bit sick! I also hope you can get enough sleep so that you won't get sick again :D

Let us know how the workout went, and the weight in if you did it :D I'm sure it's fine :D

That's wonderful that you're feeling yourself a bit again Rho, and it's awesome that you're going to the gym today. :) I wish you luck with the weigh-in as well, and I hope you have a nice evening.

Hey guys,

thanks for the kind words. I'm really glad I went to the gym too. I did my weigh-in, and I had to laugh, cos I'm currently 208.0, which is a grand loss of 0.6lbs. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

I've decided to take it all in good stride - after all, I have lost loads of inches and everyone's remarking on how different I look, even my workmates who see me everyday. I can only assume that there's a lot of muscle gain involved.

Still, I'm shocked and a little irritated. But still happy because I haven't gained anything, at least. My eating was out of sync when I was ill so I was afraid that I'd find I'd gained weight, even with all my inch loss.

Oh, I don't know..

On a slightly different note, my weight training regime isn't getting any easier, especially the squats and the lats training. They're killing me! I sweated buckets during my reps and sets! I just spent the last couple of hours sitting down (sewing the pockets shut on a new pair of smaller trousers :jump: for work) and as soon as I moved I felt my muscles creaking with pain. I can only imagine how much they'll ache tomorrow, seeing as today's was my first training session in just over a week.

Ah well, I really don't know what to say about this weight loss... Thank goodness it's not my sole focus otherwise I'd be so disheartened..

That's exactly what I'm talking about! I know, I know, that my thighs look better, but yet (in my case) no inch loss, and very few pounds lost. It's beyond frustrating but yes I'm happy you know not to take the scale too seriously, because I think it's a load of crap. Also, you're incorporating lifting sessions which are going to really help you, you're going to see the pounds melt away. You could have very easily gained because when you're ill, you never know how your body will react. I have these friends that when they get sick, they lose weight, but when I get sick, man I gain. So you should be proud that you did lose weight, and know that what matters is how you're feeling and how your clothes fit. You have lost inches, you're wearing smaller slacks...that's the best gauge. Keep it up Rho, you're doing great! :)

Aww, thanks L,

It's really weird how our bodies work, isn't it. I guess there's also the fact that there seems to be an overemphasis on weight, but the truth is that it's not the sole determinant of being healthy! A lot of skinny people are really unfit! That's what I tell myself anyway, especially in the gym when I see skinny girls doing nothing but looking good on the machines. At the end of the day can they do a 60 minute cardio session? No! Can I? Hell yes!

I'm loving the smaller slacks - I've decided I'll only get 2 pairs of trousers (for work) for each dress size I go down by - that way I don't walk around with pinned trousers (which look awful).
Thanks for the encouragement L, it means a lot!

General update

My lord, everything aches like hell today... I managed to complete all my lats exercises yesterday. For the previous 2 weight training sessions I'd been using 3kg for the first 2 sets, then dropping down to 2kg for the last set because I couldn't raise my arms by the last set. But yesterday, even though it absolutely killed me, I managed to use 3kg for all 3 sets. I felt so proud of myself...afterwards (At the time all I could do was grunt with the pain and exertion and thoroughly hate whoever invented such exercise!)

I was also very organised yesterday - as soon as I got into the gym I put together all the equipment I needed (the ball, the 2kg, 3kg, 5kg dumbbells, the 15kg bar, and the bench) so I didn't have to dash all over the place between exercises. I think I maximised my calorie burning during the workout as well - only 30rest between sets. The squats killed me, as usual. When the personal trainer first showed me how to do them, I remember thinking "What's so hard about squatting?" and so I asked her how to make them more difficult, to which she said "Hold dumbbells while doing the squats". So right from my first session I used 2kg dumbbells, running away with myself. It took nearly a week for the pain in my butt to go away. I'm feeling that pain again today - even my boobs ache!

So my weight training programme (with weights - all 3 sets of 12 reps) is as follows:
- Cardio (5 minute warm up on level 5 on the X-trainer)
- 3 minute stretch (all body)
- Bent over Row (with the barbell) - 15kg (7.5kg on each side)
- Lats raises - 3kg
- Inclined chest press - 5kg
- Squats (upped to with 2kg dumbbells)
- Tricep curls - 2kg
- Hammer curls - 3kg (upped to 4kg as at yesterday)
- Abs
- 5 minute stretch (all body)

I've got my nuts and dried fruit for my morning snack, and my satsumas for my afternoon snack, so I think my eating will be on point today too. It's really the planning of it, isn't it.. I think I look forward more to my snacks than to actual meals - I guess I really like my yoghurt and my fruit. It's a chance to try out different things, and to exceed the recommended 5 daily portions of fruit and veg. Most of the time I do, but sometimes I don't. But slowly, I'm getting there. I've got a wedding at the end of June to attend, and I think it'll be hot (meaning I'll look hot - my self-esteem wasn't too bad to start off with but this weight loss thing is making it rise by the day!) The only thing that scares me is that the dress (which I got in February) will be too big for me - I might have to have it taken in. I guess that's great news because it clearly shows how much I've lost, but I keep thinking 'Damn, that set me back £140! - I need more wear out of it!'

Wow, what a dress!
You will look absolutely GORGEOUS in it!!! :D
And it's certainly worth having it taken in to really show the results of your hard work. Keep going, girl!
Julie

Rho that dress is beautiful! It’s really stunning, you’re going to look wonderful! You must get it taken in, you have to show off your new body! Oh I’m so excited for you. I know what you mean, the skinny obsession is all wrong. I want to be skinny for sure but I want to be healthy and fit. Your weight training is awesome, and the squats sound the worst in my opinion. But the benefit of squats sounds like a nice trade-off.

I like the way you approach your snacks, it’s a way to still eat healthily and try new foods while still fitting in your core meals. I didn’t really think of it that way, but that seems to be a good system. Thanks for posting your insights and advice in my diary I really appreciate it Rho, I hope you’re having a nice night :)

WOW Rho that dress is incredible, I would certainly wear something like that myself, you have excellent taste girlfriend!! Great job on your workouts and an even better job on your snack choices. And I'm excited that your feeling good about your inches lost, forget about those scales, if your clothes are getting smaller, you have to know your getting smaller, it all adds up friend. WAY TO GO!
Kim

Aww, thanks guys :$

I was going through a few of my pictures yesterday and I'm starting to regret not taking more pictures when I first started in order to compare, but I guess I really didn't want to see myself.. It would have been nice to take 'before' and 'after' pictures of myself in the dress...ah well..

Juliette, thanks... I've worn the dress only once and I felt great in it, so I'm sure I'll feel even better when I wear it for the wedding cos maybe I'll get to look as I feel! :D

Oh Sara & Kim, thank you so much - it's so sweet of you to say so. Y'know, I was watching this thing on tv last night on skinny celebrities like Kate Bosworth and Nicole Richie, and all I could think was 'ewww'. As much as I hate fat fat fat, I also don't want to be skinny skinny skinny - I don't think it looks even remotely sexy. All the glamorous women often pictured on red carpets and so on are the result of careful make-up application by hordes of experts! So why on earth am I trying to look like them? Nah - I just want to be able to be fit and say stuff like "I'll be doing my daily jog of 10 miles before breakfast", if that makes any sense :)

The snack thing just seemed to make sense because having 3 meals a day meant I'd probably feel really hungry between meals. So I prefer the idea of 3 meals plus 2 snacks- not being greedy or anything :D

I was in so much pain last night. It actually woke me up at 3am! Well, I think I woke up for several reasons. I'd set my alarm for 7am (using my mobile phone) but I woke up scared that the alarm wouldn't work (even though that's never happened before). So I looked at my phone, and I realised the battery had run out! So it really wouldn't have gone off. So I got it charging and turned it back on, before creaking into the least uncomfortable position and attempting to get some sleep. Really painful, but I do feel better this morning. (pain-wise, not sleep-wise) I've got a cardio workout tonight, so it'll be a good chance to work the pain away, I think... Oh no, I've got a meeting now... funny how they say it'll last for an hour and 2 hours later you're still sitting there...
