Rebel's Diary

Found my grandmother's recipe for German pancakes..oh mannn
Given your frequent mentions of your gran´s gut busting cookery I´m not sure if I should be happy or sad that I have no idea how my grannies cooked. One died years before I was born and the other (who lived until 5 years ago even though she was 10 years older) never cooked anything if she had visitors because she was frail and needed to take it as easy as possible.

Mine was like a mom to me.she taught me how to cook, sew, raise a garden, and just all around things like that. She had 2 daughters and 7 sons so the kitchen was always working lol. She always hated the thought of fast boxed food. I guess she made everything from scratch because her mom did it that way.

Yea sometimes it just works out that way. I feel lucky she took me under her wing like she did.
I'm not sure how she would feel about me low carbing and americanizing her recipes but I think she would be ok with it..someday i might even finish that german cookbook just so the original recipes don't get too lost.

It seems like there's an entire generation of Americans that grew up with little or no home cooking - I can't even imagine that. I remember stumbling on a blog thread somewhere that had people discussing the "revolutionary" notion of not cutting corners in old recipes and actually doing things like browning the meat and onions for a stew and I was just flabberghasted that people could not know how that influences taste. My mom used the occasional stock cube but otherwise everything started out with fresh ingredients. I'm probably a spoiled brat. Or European, there was a French person on that thread who seemed close to rupturing something at the thought of raising kids on fake food.

Yea i think cooking is a dying art. If someone doesn't want to be a chef they never bother to learn to cook.

I have hope though; home cooking seems to be getting more normal again. Quicker and simpler than it used to be, but also healthier and more tasty (at least to my palate).

Yesterday was bad...
Didnt get around to eating till 8pm..
So went out for a steak and baked potato..2000 calories more or less.

Today much of the same..
Corndogs for breakfast...
Will try to find something healthyish for dinner....

Been depressed and 1000 word essay due tomorrow night...

Just Blaaaahhhh.....

Steak and a baked potato isn't bad - it certainly beats NOT eating. Corndogs, well... I hope you can get your essay done efficiently and handing it in will improve your overall well-being :grouphug:

Hey Rebel!

I'm new and I've been reading a little bit of your diary. I must say, I really admire your journey so far, and I hope that you are getting the help you need from this community!

To join the conversation a bit, I think it's so cool that you were blessed to know your grandma as well as you did. My maternal grandmother died right after my mom graduated with her Master's/right before my parents' wedding. My paternal grandmother lived about 1.5 hours south from us, but my father rarely visited her. I remember only getting babysat from her until about age 5, then years later when I was 11 she went into cardiac arrest and died.

My parents have these awesome stories about how good their mothers used to cook and how they made everything from scratch breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Personally, I think I'm a lazy ass chef. At one point, I bought nothing but boxed dinners because I was too lazy to make anything. When my depression got particularly bad, I ate pretty much nothing but fast food and processed food with my boyfriend. I guess that's how I got to the weight I am now. Now I live with my mother and I'm recovering while taking Zoloft and continuing my degree. She buys/cooks pretty much everything. She was never one to make things from scratch though. I grew up eating all the crap kiddie breakfast cereals, box pancakes, Chef Boyardee, and boxed flavored rice/pasta. Don't get me wrong, she's a good cook, but she does take shortcuts. Oh well.

My boyfriend is the only one that's made me things from scratch because he's from Haiti and that's how he's used to getting his food. I love when he cooks from scratch for me. I'm more than glad to clean up when he does. I always say, I hate cooking, but if you want, I'll be the perfect housewife and keep your house spotless, lol.

Yesterday was another mystery calorie day.... Went out for bbq for dinner so it was a who knows day..

Got a 100% on that 1000 word essay. Wrote it up and typed it out in 20 mins.....feel almost guilty....
Ended up witha 98 for the class and started the next class today..

Funny you should mention Haiti...I did some construction work there. I guess it was 1992 or so. I loved the food.it was simple but omg so good. I used to go to this little outside eating place. It was pretty much some tables set up outside someones kitchen window lol....very Haitian...
That had the best beef and pumpkin soup...more of a stew but they called it soup. Now I go to the Caribbean every chance i get but haven't been back to Haiti.
