Reaching For the Dreams....

My name is Jacqui. I'm 16, and am overweight. That about sums it up, doesn't it? :)

But, actually, I've been trying for a long time now to lose the weight. When I first started, waaaaaaay back when, I thought that everything was going to be easy. HA! Was I wrong! Obesity is in my family, at least my mom's side, and so far, I've been plagued with the worst of both sides of my parents! Mom's weight, dad's irish skin(lol) mom's possibility for diabetes, dad's unflexibility, and so on and so forth.

I play volleyball, and have been told that I am really good. But I HATE being the only 'fat girl' on the team. I never feel like I fit in, and ugh, just everything is bad. This year, I have a chance of making varsity, but if I can't get myself in shape, my chances deminish greatly.

If you noticed the title of diary, there is a meaning behind it. I'm a country girl, but I was born and raised in the city...And ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted horses. But that never came true. This last year, my dad made a deal with me. "Lose the weight, and you can get riding lessons." I was estatic. Went and lost 10lbs too! ....then I sorta fell off of it, and the weight came back. It's been doing this for a while. Only recently have I been able to keep the 10lbs off.

I started at 220, and now am at 208. I'm planning on somewhere in the 160's. The war has been painfully slow, but I'm fighting. Fighting the urge for food seems to be my hardest battle.

you can do it!

You can lose the weight! You definitely can! They say if you cut 500 calories a day from your diet, you will lose 1 pound per week. Double that, and you would lose 2 pounds a week, AND without taking your calorie count so low that your metabolism would slow down (starvation mode).

Do the math... There are 10 weeks between now and mid-August. 2 pounds a week would be 20 pounds by the time school starts. There are 28 weeks between now and Christmas. 2 pounds a week would be 56 pounds by Christmas. Do you want it bad enough to count your calories and get in some regular exercise? You can do it!!!

thanks! that's a great way of putting it, with the math. I never really realized it like that! Thanks!

You can do ANYTHING you want. Everyone here is awesome. High school sucks, but it does end! : )
And there is nothing wrong with being pale! Sunscreen SPF 60 rules!

yeah, SPF 50 or higher for me! But what stinks for me, is my 3 other siblings have that perfect golden tone to their skin... lol.

Hi Xorie,

Thanks for writing in my diary. When you are old you will be glad you have that lovely Irish skin. Just stay out of the mid-day Sun, keep using that Sun screen and watch the bathing beauties age while your porcelain skin makes it virtually impossible for anyone to tell your 50yrs old.

I understand the "urge for food" as I am sure many people here do. I know for myself the key to my success is going to be looking at food as fuel and coming to grips with the fact that I really don't need all that much. We need to move more, eat less and don't use food for anything other than fuel. I know we can do it. We just have to work really hard and hopefully someday it won't be work at all....it will just be how we live. Good Luck!

well this should teach me to say anything about my skin! lol :D But thanks. I really REALLY like this website, and now i'm down another pound! Knowing that other people DO know what I'm going through really helps with the mental part of the weight loss. Just knowing that I'm not alone helps.

Well, today was a good day. Controlled myself physically, and emotionally. Ate well, didn't splurge, and felt good all around. I really hope to keep it up, and to be completely and fully honest on this journal. Maybe then I can make myself see that this time i am actually doing it!

Hi xorie. Well done you are doing great. I am 16 too and i know how it feels to have to balance school and trying to eat well. Keep up the great work and i know you will reach your goal!!

I don't want to have this come off sounding like advertising but there is a program that I found helped me so much. It incorporated the math, 2 lbs a week for x number of weeks etc., shows you how many calories you should be getting and even has graphs tracking your progress and a nutrition graph. The nutrition graph is amazing you enter everything you've been eating and it tells you if you need more protein/carbs etc for a balanced diet. It also tracks you water consumption which is a big big help.

It's really helped me and some of my friends, it may be worth a look :)

There's a free trial you can download or they'll send you the cd :D

Well, on day three now, and I'm still going strong. Gave in once to a craving for a PB&J sandwich, but that was the only time. Though, it gets frustrating when you watch your brothers and sisters eat what they want, and still not have to worry about their weight. Last night we had a "barabaque" and my dad made hamburgers, french fries and corn on the cob. Everyone else eat everything on their plate, but I barely finished my burger. Hopefully, I'll be able to learn how to deal with it, but it's so hard just watching them eat things that I love to eat, but can't, or I might face problems in the future.

Just for future referances, these posts are going to be more like what's in my journals at home. Not so much as a "story" post, but more like a stream of conciousness, so they may jump around with the thoughts in my brain. :)

yes you can

You CAN enjoy a cookout with your family, you just have to plan ahead. We grilled burgers today, and this is what I had... A 1/4 pound burger (made with lean ground beef) with lettuce, tomato, and ketchup on a bun - 350 calories; 1 small ear of corn with one pat of butter - 100 calories; the rest of a whole tomato - 20 calories; a few bites of squash - 5 calories; 20 Lays Light potato chips - 75 calories; and water to drink.

Add that up, it equals 570 calories. I was really full, and enjoyed everything that my family ate, but I still had 830 calories to spend in my day. (I am aiming for 1400 per day.) Even at 1200 calories a day, you would still have 630 to play with after a big cookout meal like that.

Xorie, you don't have to miss out. You don't have to deprive yourself. If your family is going to have a fun meal like that, then you just eat a small breakfast like some cereal and low fat milk, some fruit and toast, or something small. Then have a light lunch, like a turkey sandwich and fruit, or a big salad. Then you will have enough calories left for dinner that you can eat the same as everyone else and not be cheating at all!

I know how it feels to watch everyone eating and you feel like you can't, but good for you for staying strong. We are having a barbeque on sat so i hope i do as well as you. Keep up the goood work!!!

Well, today I feel like I actually accomplished something. I had a pretty bad day emotionaly, but had no problem controlling my eating! This is VERY good for me. And I don't even have to lie.(Which is a MAJOR plus, I can say :D) I even went to a pot luck for my brother, and only got a little of a few things, and a tiny brownie (that tasted marvolous for it's bite) I also skipped over the pop, and drank 2 1/2 bottles of water!

I'm hoping though that I can control myself through this last week of school. This is the first time i've had major problems with studing for finals, and I'm about ready to cry! Oh well, I'll just take it one day at a time. And today's almost over...

finals

Finals are so tough. Hang in there. You will probably do much better than you think - especially if you went to class! :p

Well... got the math final out of the way, and still managed to eat right. AND we had a "party" in my ASL class because the seniors are leaving today, and there was cake, soda, and cookies... I had a tiny peice of cake, a single cookie, and NO pop! *does little happy dance* go me! :D

Stepped on the scale and i'm now 4lbs lighter than I was, and lower then I have been in the last two years. I am VERY excited. I'm hoping that when I get back from Cape Cod (family reunion) that I will be below 198. That's my goal. It also helps that the house that we're renting has a small lake in the backyard, so that I can swim every morning! Yes!
