Rachel's Struggle

Thanks for the advice cybermama, I joined that website so i hope it helps.

I have decided to go back to losing weight the best way I know how. It may not be what the experts say, but it is what helped me lose 30 lbs in the past. I am not longer going to eat breakfast. I tried that, and it didnt do anything for me. yea i didnt give it much time, but ive never had a weigh in week like this. For as long as i can remember, ive never eaten breakfast. so im going back to that. it was a huge struggle to eat it anyway.

Now i have also decided to only drink when im thirsty. I heard that the more water you drink the less you will retain/it will help you not retain water. I had about 3 water bottles a day. I had to drink when i wasnt thirsty, i dont think this helped, i think it hurt.

Some of you may not agree with me, but doing this in the past never harmed me, and i always lost weight. I hope it works.

Yes, I actually disagree.

I noticed usually that I loose more when I drink more water cause I read that for fats to breakdown, it needs water.

However, I must also say that there are certain things others do that does not work for me cause each of us is special and not everything is generally applicable but somethings do apply.

You would know yourself better... perhaps its time to experiment with your body and see how it will react to it.

Well I'm willing to try a lot of things to find out what truly works best for me. I dont deprive myself of water or anything, I just want to see if i see more results this week so can find out what to do.

Alright so today i went back to my old dieting ways, and i can honestly say i feel so much better than i did this past week of dieting the new way. I think i was trying too much of everything.

Today i had a serving of hasbrowns, scrambled eggs, and 2 sausage links for lunch.

and for dinner i had mashed potatoes and hamburger helper.

so i'm done for the day. I had no snacks, and no breakfast. I have only drank 1 bottle of water as opposed to the usual 2-3 i would of had by now. I also had 2 glasses from the dining hall.

i know my way is not the best way, but its the only way that has truly helped me. I also did my 40 minute walk today along with the various trips up and down the stairs. Ive looked online to try to estimate my calorie intake for the day, and it is around 1,200, although that may be on the high side. I think i am also changing my weigh in day to tuesday as that is when i first weighed myself in the morning...

I've also run into the problem of doing too many things at once when it comes to losing weight, and that really threw me off the wagon. As long as your way is healthy and you're not shorting yourself on anything, you should be fine. :)

Is your goal to lose FAT and be HEALTHY, or to drop a number on the scale?? Read the nutrition stickies, and put them to the test, and give it a little time. Your goal should be to be HEALTHY, and skipping good, nutritious meals, probably isn't too healthy. Tough love from someone who knows!! I used to be very impatient as well. Hope you don't take this the wrong way :) :) :) :)

Hey,
I think you gotta take it one day at a time, and not see this as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle. I changed my lifestyle in January and lost 20 pounds pretty consistently but very slowly in about 7 months. I have stagnated (but maintained) for 3 months because I wrote a postgraduate thesis, moved to a different continent and could not monitor my eating and had no time or place to exercise. I am starting again as of this week and want to lose the other 20 pounds, hopefully again in about 8 months.
I also got frustrated when nothing happened, but you have to give changes time! One week is not enough to judge if something works or not!

For example I started changing my diet from normal westerner diet to gluten free and dairy free. This was very hard, so I introduced dairy again. I have now phased it out again, because I live in Africa now and there are very few dairy products here anyway.
Then after a while of eating gluten free I started to exercise. First just a tad, 5 minutes elliptical and some swimming, then upped it until at the height of my exercising I would run between 3 and 5 k three times a week and swim 1-1.5 k 3 times a week.
Other than looking better, I felt amazing! I felt strong because I was doing it, and I felt healthy because I actually was healthy!

I am a medic, so I back up a lot of my theories with the physiology classes I received in uni. For example about drinking. I think your body will ask for it, if it needs it, but sometimes we feel hungry and we can quench it by drinking a tall glass of water. It will "buy you time". And our bodies are overexposed to food and drinks and sodas and sugars and fats, so sometimes it just wants hydration but has "forgotten" how to signal this, instead it just signals empty stomach... and instead of drinking, you eat. Which does not satiate you, because really you were thirsty!

Another thing, granola bars are very high in calories, maybe you should try fruit and/or veggies instead of granola bars or 80 cal snacks. A banana has 80 cals and may leave you fuller than a small bag of chips. You can eat up to 6 apples for the caloric woth of 1 granola bar!
I know that not having a kitchen is a pain, and you are totally dependent on what the cafeteria cooks, but maybe you can find somewhere where you can get fruit and veg and make snacks with that. I find that if I eat for example 1/4 of a cucumber before my main dish, I will eat only half of the main, but the cucumber only had like 10 calories!

And finally: get all the nutritional info you can, it is all out there on the net, remember we tend to underestimate food, and think it has less cals than it really has. If you still want to eat the snickers bar after knowing it has 330 cals, then go ahead, you shouldn't stop enjoying food, but you should be able to make an informed choice about the food you will put in your mouth!
Hope you find your way, love, Camy

thanks for the reply paperairplanes, its much appreciated.

Don't worry jz i know you are giving me helpful advice, its why i'm here!! so thank you i really do appreciate it :)

and camy thanks for all that info, it def made me think. :) I just want to drop my weight at a fast enough rate that i dont get sick of dieting and jump off the bandwagon. Its happened to me many times before. I can never diet longer than 6 months.

I totally agree with this. Don't stress so much about numbers. This should be about your health. It's only healthy to lose about 1lb-2lbs a week. Sometimes we don't lose anything. So what? What's the rush? As long we try and eat healthy everyday. Instead of cutting a meal, why not eat healthier meals? I know you live in a dorm and have to eat in the halls. My eating place had a huge salad bar and wrap place. It was delicious!

But yeah, I would definitely say keep trying the healthy way instead of cutting meals and water. Water is so important. I have to drink at least 64oz a day. With how much I exercise, I NEED that water.

But anyways, it's up to you. Good luck with this.

thanks jes. For me its not really cutting out breakfast because i never ate in in the first place, its never been a part of my eating schedule. I would never ever skip lunch and dinner though. Im not cutting out water, I just dont force myself to drink when im not thirsty. We have a salad bar but i really HATE the stuff. it makes it so much more difficult on me, but i have tried to like salad so many times and i really just cant get into it lol

Hello, I forgot to update yesterday.

It was not my best food day at all. No need to yell at me, I wont do it again. I had a cheesecake parfait for lunch and rigatoni(not too bad) for dinner. for snacks i had a pack of gushers and a 45 calorie rice krispie treat. I know that is not healthy at all, but as ive said, i SUCK at temptation. if its there i'll eat it...its a really horrible habit im going to have to work really hard to break. I need to kick myself in the butt and take this more seriously.

On the other hand though, I have been keeping up my water intake, its just a little below the first week.

So today was officially 1 week of dieting, so i got on the scale and it read 162.6!!! I'm overjoyed! :hurray: that 2.4lb loss gave me a boost to keep going! Well i better get ready for class...its gunna be so boring!! i might come back and sleep some more. Hope everyone is doing well!

I'm doing well calorie counting these past like...3 days...its SO hard.

Lunch:
Classic Italian Sub from quiznos-1020cals(eek)
Snacks:
fruit roll up-80
coke-100
Dinner:
Easy Mac-220
White cheddar popcorn-100
Rice krispie treat-90.

Total: 1610

So...as im sure you can all tell, i dont eat fruit or vegetables. its always been that way. I just cant get into them. I do like strawberries, but they would go bad before i would eat them all. I also like bananas, but they make my mouth itchy haha. and i hate salad. I dont like apples much. I'm terribly unhealthy in that respect really. It pretty bad and i know it. But i must say i have easily adjusted to not eating as much. On days i can count my calories i will figure in snacks. On days i have to guess my calories i wont snack. i dont want to be lying to myself and making me think im doing better than i really am.

Today the roomie and i went on a 30 minute walk in the freezing cold..it was flurrying out!! i was SOO COLD! but im glad i pushed myself to go. Later im doing ab exrcises. I dunno if the roomie is going to join me: she hates them and thinks its really hard. But all i know is i'm going to do it :p

Hello again. Today is going well so far, I dont really have much to say but i was bored so i figured i would post an update.

Today i had a fruit roll up and lasagna for lunch. Im not really too sure how many calories were in the lasagna...it was one serving...i dont think it would be more than 600 but thats only a guess. either way its less than what ive had for lunch the past 2 days or so.

I'm not going to snack between lunch and dinner because i have to estimate calories. I'm going to the dining hall tonight so hopefully i can make some wiser choices. anything is better than pizza really.

i have some conference with my english teacher today at 1:40. Everyone has to make 3 appointments to get the 4th credit for the class. She is supposed to like help us improve and stuff, but the thing is, ive never gotten points off on ANYTHING. Oh well. i should have started going earlier in the semester. now i have to cram in 3 conferences before december 6th. shouldnt be too hard...

Don't you just love instructors who think that their class is the only one you are taking in a semester... and if it's not... it better be the most important!!! I HATED that!!!

Yea it is pretty annoying, but i had a lot of free time so it was ok i guess.

Alrightttt. so i caved and had a coke :( and at dinner i had a cookie! idk whats wrong with me! my dinner was one of those chicken bowl things that have mashed potatoes, corn, and chicken. it was soooo good. i dont know how many calories it was though..

So soon im going to do some leg stretches because i ADORE them. ive always been flexible, and the feeling of stretching feels really good. Then for 15 minutes im going to do some kicks from my tae kwon do, and then do my abs. I dont know my calorie intake for the day, however i dont think its higher than 1800, which could be worse, but to be safe im going to exercise. i shouldnt have taken that shower...lol

Oh and here are my mini goals!

159-yay goodbye 160's forever.
155-I havnt ever been this low unless i was passing it on my way up. the lowest i got was 156, and now i'll pass 155 on my way down.
149-no more 150's!
145-it sounds good lol
139-goodbye 140s
130-goal weight!

Was it from KFC? Most fast food places have "nutritional calculators" online now where you can total food. I looked it up and the mash potato bowls with the chicken and corn from KFC are 740 calories. That's not really bad considering how much food is in them. Next time I have enough calories left for one for dinner I'm gonna have that, lol. Nice job on the mini goals :)

it was from my universities dining hall...im not sure if thats a good or a bad thing really. i counted it for 800 calories just to make sure i covered it. the cookie was from the dining hall as well.

Well it was probably more healthy than the KFC one then, lol. The dining hall at Kent has really good food too. They make the best tator tots but I never know how many calories so I haven't been getting them. I'm tempted to put my food scale in my book bag and pack it around with me :X. I know....that's weird, lol.

i hope its more healthy!! haha i try to avoid stuff i know is REALLY bad if i cant count calories, like with pizza. lol

oh and a quick update I did 20 minutes of my kicks and punches and whatnot. and then 10 mins of ab work. i feel better about today now.

This is a silly update, but i just resisted temptation. a cookie or a lot of cookies. with peanut butter and chocolate. which i love. my roomies mom sent a care package with those. im SO hungry right now, but i dont eat after dinner anymore. Its 140 cals for 2. and omg...they looked SOOOOO good...my roomie ate 2..but i figured i wanna beat her and lose more weight...

its probably bad when i secretly like it when she eats more calories than me. or doesnt exercise as much. or walk as fast. or reach the top of the stairs first. I'm REALLY competitive. its stupid, but maybe this is what i needed. before i dieted alone, and wasnt trying to beat anyone. She probably feels the same. but i have a one up on exercising because i know more of them that i can do. My mom taught me well! and of course my tae kwon do stuff.
yea so..im proud of me, i suck at resisting temptation!
