question on pushups

I've heard of what they cal PRE's(Partner Resistance Exercises). Me and a friend have done pushups where you put pressure with their hands on the upper back and usually get around 6-12 reps depending on the amount of pressure. I can do 50 pushups with no pressure. I was wondering if the pressure pushups will build strength and mass?
Im around 5'8 and 140 pounds with around a 170-180 bench press.

Any movement with sufficient resistance to limit you to somewhere between 3 and 12 repetitions results in strength and mass gains for most people.

Exactly, a workout routine is definately needed, not just pushups. But then again, you could just be asking about a certain aspect of your workout - In that case, it would be more effective than a regular pushup, but I would still prefer a bench press or the like.

ya this is just a part of my routine. and i dont have access to anything but a 40 lb dumbbell set. i have weight training in school next semester after christmas break. two weeks ago i was able to press 175 at a friends house and i want to be able to keep my strength on the press and possibly get more strength until i have weight training. so i was wondering if this should be good until then?
