Pushups!

Just curious as to what all of your opinions are on pushups.

How effective do you really find them, how many reps/sets, how many days, what style, etc.?

When I was in the Marine Corps, during bootcamp, SOI and MCT, we did normal flat shoulder width pushups, then when I went off to do some other training that was more technical (MOS 8541 for anyone interested) and our routine envolved diamond cut pushups (making a diamond with your hands at the base) and also declined extended pushups (that's what we called them anyhow. It's where you mount your feet up against a tree or other object so that your feet are much higher than your head, makes it extremely difficult and gives a great burn).

Pushups are great, they are an incredible way to workout out most of your upperbody - and cheep! I still do pushups all the time, the great thing is you really can do them every day and as much as you want (sets/reps).

My favorite push up is where u get 2 arobic steps and put them just wider than your shoulders. put ur right hand on the ground in between the steps, and ur left hand on the left step, do one push up in the air, landing with right hand right step and left hand in the miiddle. I dont know what they are called cos i just made it up, but its really explosive and if u enjoy more challenging alternatives to body weight training u'll love it.

ive been doing heaps of push ups id be interested to know how many regular push ups you guy's can do without fail... and they better be proper push ups lol , oh and whats the best way to go about trying to start one handed push ups... im not sure how to start exactly but i would have thought i had the strength considdering i bench 130kg's

I can do 180-190 pushups in 2 mins. thats with some1 spotting to make sure they all done right.

its a good lil challenge, apparently you have to do 140 in 2mins to get in to some parts of the army, but i just read that in a mag so prob not ture.

Man - there are tons of things you can do with push ups. Example, there are two different types of 1 minute push ups:
1. As many push ups possible in 1 minute
2. 30 seconds up, 30 seconds down
They're both killers. The only limit to the variations of pull ups are the limits in your own creative mind.

i agree... i think u cant beat the clock like that and be doing push ups properly , i dont see the point in doing them that fast anyway

its not like i just did it right off, i trained for it. had two ppl watching to make sure i was doing it right. im sure my technique was bad but i wasnt doing it for training just as a challenge, both my nose and chest had to go down to and inch off the floor on every pushup. would have been 182 but two were not low enough

I particularly like suspended pushups, where you get three things of even height (chairs), with both feet on one object and one hand on their own seperate object with a gap in between. This allows for more extension greater difficulty in keeping good form. I can do about 30 clean and slow.
