Pushup Improvements

I am now going to type something that has only been said in my head. Because at the age of 28 I am ashamed of a "FACT" that not a liveing sole will ever hear come out of my mouth. :(

How can I improve my number of pushups? At this time 5-8 is pushing it. The last time I got off the computer and fell to the floor to do 20 pushups. I felt weak when at 5 I was straining. I endid up going to my kneys and finishing my 20. Now I have to admit that it is all my fault. I have gone from 197lbs to 240lbs in the past year. And on new years I got a job as a Taxie driver. But after seeing that I was moveing from 225lbs to 240lbs I quit that job.

My personal goals and values meen more to me then just easy money. So again I am pleading with everyone...

How can I do more?
 
Doing more pushups should not be your only goal. I suggest you start going to the gym, make a full body workout routine and start eating right.
 
As of tomarow, when I wake up I am going back to the Scarsdale diet. years ago I was 240lbs and with only short wimpey 1 mile jogs 2 times a week and a lot of sweating. I got down to 195lbs. I held it without effort or working out up untill this past year when I got real lazy and gainid it all back.

But to be honest ;)

I am makeing plans on joining the Border Patrole and to get in I have to do 20 pushups in one minute or something like that. What is real sad is that my old man did 25 slow. But he did them. He did not do it as a real workout (meaning he did it just once) , he just did it to work a kink out of arm. But it just made me realise that I am week.

My goal is to do 20 pushups in one minute. Realising that I cant evin do 10 pushups. Makes me think about how much my body can change just by reaching this one goal. The funney thing is... I used to go to a gym. And over a period of time I have come to the idea that my current free-weights can do everything the gym can. I just havent been focused all year.
 
You can almost work your whole body with free weights:



However, if your goal for now is just pushups than start doing them 2-3 times a week, spread out the days you do them. I suggest you do them in 4 sets the days you do them. If your max right now is 8 than try for around 7-8 each set. So 8-7(reps)x4(sets), two to three times a week. Up the reps when it starts getting easy.
 
I would think so, more resistance. However, just doing proper formed pushups would probably provide more resistance, so why not switch to those?
 
for me to get better at pushups really, I can give you advice that worked for me, your looked for 20 in 1 minute, well move your way up, put everything you can into it, and actually use music, good to make you angry or motivated etc. but slowly make your way up, youll soon seen that you can do ti with ease, after lots of work, andalso after u get used to pushups, do some weights if u dont already, just my advice...good luck

I guess all I can do is keep dooing it. But, boy do I feel like a wimp wnd I strain at 5 pushups. hehehe I will try for 3 sets each day. And to answer Kooly1 I do have weights. My brother and I used to be into working out. Back when I was at 195. But after the past several years I have gaind alot of bad weight and now I feel week geting into it again.
