punching myself

punching myself in the abz when im doing crunches is beneficial for me right? it really makes my abs burn. when im done with the set i almost come to tears XD
i saw a video on youtube this guy was hamering his abs.. thought id give it a try the guy had like perfect abs. but i just want to know what yall think about it.
 
I don't think it does anything at all for developing abs.
 
I think is only reminds you to tense your abs. I once had a karate instructor who used to jump on my abs while we were doing leg raises... but I guess that was trying to develop something else (he also used to smack me with a bamboo cane across the shins, thighs, back, etc. while I did katas)?
 
It's an old gym myth that won't die. I see an old guy from time to time at my Bally's who does that.
 
Pain is sometimes, but not always, a sign that something is working. If i were to punch myself in the face a bunch of times, it would burn but my jaw would not become more defined.
 
last nite my abs were swollen, like no other! sooo im gonna keep doing it and ill show yall the results after a few months.
 
well if you punch yourself in the lip it will be swollen to.... (not trying to be a jerk)

But that is normal body reaction to getting hit.

Hitting the abs does nothing for your body....zipppo
 
they only do that in martial arts to teach you how to toughen up, how to take a hit, and to sharpen your reflexes. They did the same thing to use when I was in Tai Chi. They'd punch us in the abs as we came up in a cruch position. It has nothing to do with developing muscle strength.

u actually try mimmick some of the things u c on the net?? hope u don't watch jackass
 
teaches you how to take a punch, its the same thing with those big medicine balls when you lay there and someone drops it on your abbs, or you take turns throwing them at a friend and catching with your stomach
 
It's a common dicipline. Iron shirt gong. I used to hit myself in the stomach too, I could still probably take a good amount in the stomach. Of course, it probably won't cause anything more defined. You seeing someone hitting themselves in the stomach means nothing towards seeing more muscle development. According to this train of thought, the fatass who gets hit in the stomach with a cannon ball should be ripped to shreds.
 
I had to laugh when I pictured someone sitting there and punching themselves in the ab area. I dunno what I'd do if I seen someone doing that for real. The only thing I could imagine it doing is allowing your stomach to take a beating. Overtime you should be able to endure more pain to the stomach.. as in if you were a Pride fight, or boxer.. blah blah and so forth. As for defining your abs more or anything of the sort.. Does nothing.
 
Its not going to help anything. Some martial artists do it to learn how to deal with the pain, but it wont hurt any less, it's just a mental thing.

But it wont work if you punch yourself. It's like you cant tickle yourself. Your controlling the time and power of the punch, it needs to be someone else.

You must not do this on a regular basis as you are bruising your internal organs. You will make your intestines weak and your more likely to split the lining and get septicemia (blood poisoning)
