Protein shakes, this may be overlooked

Hello there,

Does anyone that has protein shakes or meal replacement shakes find them difficult to drink?

I mean, sometimes when I make one it can be a thick liquid and it can be quite a task to gulp it all down.

Yes I know I can water it down a bit but then there is just more liquid to drink!

I have to hold my breath sometimes lol.

Does anyone get any lumpy bits in theirs?

I don't have a blender I only have a shaker and sometimes I get lumpy bits in my mix.

What can I do to make the task of having a shake seem not so much of a chore?

Sometimes I don't have a shake because they can be difficult to drink sometimes.

I am using this meal replacement stuff called myoplex, I am skinnier and putting weight on by having 4-6 meals a day, some of them being shakes, when I have the money I am buying a massive pack of it and dieting properly and sticking to a proper plan.

At the moment I have 15 or so shakes left and using them up slowly.

Does stirring them actually work?

I have the lumps and I really don't know what to do to make the shakes easier to drink.

Should I change my brand? Myoplex seemed to have loads of different stuff in it aswell as protein such as vitamins a b c d and all these other wierd names stuff what is rare to find in food which is good for you.

I just stir with a spoon and after about 2 - 3 minutes I have perfect consistency. I actually find my whey protein pretty good, I mean its not delicious but the taste isn't too bad. I use Pro Plex whey protein since I have a card at GNC so I get pretty good discounts since I take a few other supplements too.

I don't know about meal replacements though, I've never tried them.

I think the meal replacement and protein shakes are quite similar for gaining weight I think.

I dont exactly know the difference but the toxic that I drink has a great amount of protein and carbs and all other stuff in it it would take me ages to write down all of the ingredients.

Its just the problem of downing the shakes lol, I would prefer to down a pint!

I recently got some protein powder and I tried stirring with a spoon at first. Like yours tho it wasnt that good, harsh goin down. You really have to put it in a blender IMO for it to have a good taste, no chunks. Just mix in some milk ice cubes and some fruits or what not and it goes down easy for me.

myoplex really needs a blender to mix well. a shaker just doesn't get it done.
its an MRP, not just a protein shake...more calories, more carbs, more fats.

Optimum Nutrition, and AtLarge's Nitrean are both VERY mixable in a shaker cup.

stir it hard for a little and drink a little. Stir some more, drink some more. All i do is i continue to stir. Works great

I've not used myoplex myself but, have heard from others that it doesn't mix too well without a blender. Can't really comment on other weight gainers as I've never tried any.

Good news is, it sounds like its a problem specific to the brand you are using so, shouldn't be too hard to find a better alternative (like the one Malkore suggested)

Don't use expensive crap with a bunch of added vitamins etc.

Get a blender.

Get whey protein powder.

Get milk.

Get other ingredients (banana, peanutbutter, rolled oats, ice cream, fish oil, whatever).

Blend and you'll have a delicious drink that you can have a few times a day. You can find a blender for less than $20 nowadays, no excuses.

I gave up on shakes a while back. I just make oatmeal (real stuff, none of that instant crap) and stir in my whey after. The oatmeal seems to be able to 'hold' more whey per volume used vs a shake. Also it doenst taste like butt. And its ever so much more portable. The only downside is that theres a bit more carbs than one would normally have in their shake. Not a problem for me, but might be for some.

more carbs usually.

about the protein shakes, I don't see why people don't just spoon stir it. Most of the time you won't have many lumpy bits if you use the right amount of liquid, and you save having to clean a shaker or blender each time. It's only in your glass for a minute or so anyway before it's chugged so I don't see why people bother about making it ultra smooth.

It makes me feel like vomiting when you get a lumpy powdery bit get stuck in your throat, i have to mix them properly or else it puts me off them

My guess is, some of the "meal replacement" products are pretty gross in comparison to the standard whey protein. As others have said, blend it--I use soymilk, water and when possible half a banana. Comes out very smooth. Also you can add ice, which adds nice texture and is great for summer.
Your protein mix should be the highlight of the workout!

No worries about cleaning the blender - just add hot water after you're done, blend that a bit, and rinse it out. Easy to clean ifyou clean right after you use it.

I had the same problem mate, especially when mixing with milk.Probably down to the fact milk is thicker or something. It's gross when there's a glob of white goo in the drink.I never use a blender as it's easier by hand. Here's my advice assuming the shake requires two spoons.

Half fill with cup with water(ideally get a wide one so stirring is easier)
add one heaped spoon of protein, stir briskly(only needs to be for about 10-30 seconds)
Add in a little more water
Repeat the protein procedure.
Add in a little more water.

NowI end up with white but consistent water.Works like a charm

I honestly think some people just don't enjoy a chalky, over-sweet drink in and around the workout window. I've tried many different brands and mixes now..I just don't like it. All I want to drink is water..but unfortunately, I know better.

If you force-feed yourself the drink enough times, you'll get used to it. I consider it on par with cleaning the bathroom..something disgusting I do because it would be worse not to.:p Assuming you've tried several different brands of protein and several different carb powders/drinks to mix them with. If not, experiment..and good luck. I hope you don't end up stuck with just drinking the nasty thing.

Oh..and as far as mixing goes, I put in half the water, add everything but the whey, shake it up a bit, put in the scoop of whey, shake some more, add rest of water, one last shake. The whole process takes about 2 minutes, and it comes out pretty smooth (no noticeable lumps). Just thought I'd throw that in there for reference.

I don't know if anyone mentioned, but there is a little blender thing called the Magic Bullet, it is awesome for protein shakes. You put the stuff in the cup, put on the blade top, and just stick it down on the thing and it blends it. Then you can take it on the go and just shake it up a bit later or drink it right there and wash the cup easily to use later. I do this with the vanilla whey protein from costco (6lb for %25) and I mix it with orange juice, which tastes like kind of like an orange julius, or I mix with grape juice, which tastes like grape licorice, both are pretty good and no chunks at all.
