problems with upper body

I find pushups hard to do but I never feel worked out properly when I'm done. You get me? I just feel knackered but not that I've done anything useful, I'm to crap at them to do anything meaningful with them.

What are roman push ups?

In your standard push-up position, your hands/ fingers are facing straight foward, about shoulder width apart, but placed just a bit behind the line of your shoulders. If you go to a ' wide ' push-up position, your hands/ fingers are still facing foward as before, but now they're further apart than shoulder width.

Wiith Roman Push-ups, 2 things change. One is, you place your hands about 2' or so outside( i.e to the side of ) your trunk area - again, still placed just a bit behind the line of your shoulders - so now your hand placement is very wide. Even wider than a wide push-up. Second, instead of your your hands/ fingers facing straight foward, they're now pointed to the side. Think of a standard push-up where both hands are pointed at 12 o' clock. In a Roman Push-up, your right hand is pointed at 3 o' clock, and you left hand is pointed at 9 o' clock.

it all depends how many you can do. try a bit, make sure you keep your body straight. and dont flare your elbows, keep about a 45 degree angle between your upper body and upper arm, go a bit wide to hit the pecs more if you want that.

Yup. I can do around 20-22. Then cannot do anymore.

I agree with Karky - seems they're easy for you to do.

If that is the case, you should try and figure out a push-up routine in which you are hitting failure somewhere closer to 8-12 reps.

Just as doing 20+ reps of bicep curls isn't the most ' optimal ' way to maximize strength and or muscle size, neither is doing 20+ reps for chest development - i.e push-ups.

The same training principles apply.

Using 8-12 reps right?

Know those 22 push ups you can do ?

Further to what Karky said on ' slowness '. Try this - do a 3/3 pace of push-ups.

In perfect form, doing it as smoothly as possible, do a pushup counting 3 seconds slowly on the way up , at the top hold for a very slight pause, and then another 3 seconds of a controlled descent the way down.

How many reps can you do with this 3/3 pace ?

why do slow concentric when he wants to get big and strong? It will only limit the fast twitch fibers he uses. fast concentric = more IIB fibers, which have more potential for growth.

I should be doing them fast so? Or should I do what you recommended earlier with slowly lowering myself?

slow on the way down, 3 sec or so, and explode up as fast as you can, but keep form! body straight.. etc. Let me know how many you can do like that. also, make sure you go all the way down, chest or noise touching the floor

I tell u what I did when I did pushups.

I got a backpack,

Put some weight discs in there,

Then put the backpack on,

Then did some push ups.

Cheers lads, how many weights did you put in the backpack?

I'll try that once I've done things right doing normal pushups
