ppls opinions: am i too thin

Hi all...

I know this has been talked about alot, but I'm really not sure whether I'm considered 'very thin' right now or not.

See, alot of people I ask - almost all girls too - say 'no way' i'm not too thin and that I have a lean good body which isnt too skinny. I weigh 154lbs and am 178cm (6') - which, according to some internet sites is an 'ideal weight' for age (19). I'm not saying I'm big for a second .. im not ... but I dont know how much muscle mass I should increase. I want to get muscular - lean muscular looking - but mainly just to have a nice looking body (not skinny and not fat...that nice in-between!)

The thing is I'm not sure if i'd be a complete ectomorph or just partly....people on here have said they weight 130 etc - that I can see would be real skinny!

But yeh - I havent really done any routine weights for ages ... am just starting. Thing is, I've read alot about how skinny ppl should do high reps ... the little i've done i've basically stuck to lifting a weight I can do properly for about 8-10 reps..doing this for 3 sets.

I want to get more muscular on my arms and chest - my chest is 36", arms 11". Is this very very small??? The other thing .. I read that post where a guy said you shouldnt do isolation ex's when your skinny ... is this really true? surely curls for my arms will do some good? The other measurements for those who care ... waist is 30" (narrowest part), thigh 20", calf 14".

I know this is a bit vague, but what would be ideal measurements for all of these? (for height and/or age)

Thanks, sorry about the heap of questions!
Andrew

Without seeing exactly what you look like, the best way to determine what a good weight to be at would be to get your Body Fat % measured by a professional. If you are a member of a gym, most of them will do this for you as part of your membership ... once you get that tested, you can enquire about your body type (endomorph, etc).

Hey,

Yeh I have tested that just recently - its about 17% - just under. What does that mean?

Thanks,
Andrew

It means you are in pretty good shape in regards to bf% A bit less wouldn't hurt, but you are certainly not fat (you can be underweight and still fat). Packing on the muscle would be the best way to lower your bf% for you...

An ideal goal for you might be 170lbs total with a bf% of 11. You only have to lose 6 lbs of fat and gain 20 lbs of muscle to do it... But your goal is the one that would be ideal for you.

Kalrog,

Thanks 4 tha good info - that sounds like a good goal to work towards. Out of interest, would that be more of a long term goal? I.e. I know it depends on my routine etc., but would it take more than 6 months to gain 20lbs muscle?

Thanks,
Andrew

It kinda depends on your motivation and experience in a gym. You could easily put on 20lbs in 6 months ... you would have to increase your caloric intake by quite a bit and go to the gym 4-5 times a week (about 45 min should cover a decent workout), but IS an attainable goal.
