Post-Mono

Hey all,

To begin with I'm 20yrs old, 5' 11" and I've been working out for the better part of 5 years. Recently I finally reached my long-term 160 pound goal.

However, about 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with Mononucleosis and Strep throat (Indescribably painful). Basically I've lost 15 pounds and am back to 144 for the first time since high school. The doctor has advised me not to lift for at least a couple more weeks.

What can I do to gain back some good weight and try to stay in shape?

Don't do anything when you're on mono. I just had it (at 29!) a few months ago.

Wait a few months until you get back into it. Try doing light workouts every few weeks, like a walk or some pushups, to see if you still get that sickly mono fatigue.

Once that's mostly gone (in some people it never leaves completely), do what you've been doing, but cut back the routine to about 70% and gradually increase.

If you engage in a workout with mono, you'll cause the symptoms to remain even longer. Be patient.

How do I know when is long enough? Should I get some kind of doctor's clearance before I do anything physical?

Id suggest a doctors clearance, but depending on the severity, i'd say take the time it first hit you to the time where you basically feel better resting, divide that time in half, and start doing "sensing sessions" then.

Your body will let ya know.

And when I get back into it which is the best way to do it. Obviously I'm not going to start hitting the weights like I used to. But should I start with light muscle isolation or more of a light full body workout?

60-70% of your weight, previous running times, intensity, everything.

As best as ya can calculate or estimate.
