portions sizes versus extact measurements

when i think about the concept of just watching your portion sizes as opposed to a specific calorie amount each day with a restricted menu...i choose the restricted diet because then i can be exact with the calories i get per day and weight i should lose...obviously watching your portion sizes HAS worked, but i just dont understand how it can work well if you dont pay attention to how many calories you get per day or per meal...
 
I'd say it depends on what one's difficulty with food is... If it's high calorie foods that are giving you problems, then yes, counting calories would be best. If it's portion size/control, then that's the area to focus on. For most, it's a mix - but I'd think with eating healthy food for the most part, it'd be making sure that you're exactly what you should be getting.
