Picky Eating Flight Attendant

I first want to say Hi! I also want to give you my background on who I am, what I'm doing, and what I hope to do.

My name is Brandi, I'm twenty four years old. I have two major things that go against me and me wanting to lose eight. One I am a flight attendant. While that sounds all glamorous it's a career choice that has more times then not weight gain. When I started flying in 06 I was a happy 150 pounds. Soon enough I sky rocketed to 174. Sadly doing this job finding food to fit any diet is a nightmare ... finding any food for an adult picky eater is even harder!

And yes I'm an adult picky eater, while most children grow out of that little "phase" it turned into a life long struggle for me. While most adults can easily eat a salad I shake, sweat and am beyond terrified to put any of that green stuff towards my mouth. Which has in turn become a huge downfall with weight for me.

So with my choices of food nine out of ten times being fast food (crazy airports) and then ten times out of ten I am terrified of trying something new I've decided I must become creative in keeping calories down and keeping myself full. I'm first and formost trying to lose fifteen pounds by the end of March (facing reality here, I ordered new uniforms). After that I want to get down to a happy 148 pounds. My unltimate goal no matter how long it takes me will be to reach 125 pounds. A weight I have not even come close to in fifteen years at least.

This will be a struggle, I don't doubt that. I know I have a lot going against me, but I also have a lot to go with. This is not a diet for me, this will be a lifestyle change.

Over the holidays I gained six pounds and was up to 180 pounds, since right before then I was 174 pounds and now at 175 I have decided to post a picture of me around 174. *sigh* Between then and now I cut off all my hair, sorry had to take a moment to be sad. hehe

Now onto what I've eaten today:

Breakfast: Jumbo egg, one bacon strip, on one buttered and toasted wheat bread.

Lunch: Three ham slices, one wheat bread with butter, Sugar free Jello cup

Dinner: Jumbo egg, one bacon strip, on one buttered and toasted wheat bread.

Dessert: One cup of pudding.

Drinks: Water! -another goal of mine is to cut out all soda, so far so good ... I've had one 20 ounce total this year-

Take note, most of my days will look like this. Sadly my fear of food is terriflying, I'm glad I have been eating wheat bread though! That's a huge step up for me. : x

I also worked out for around thirty minutes. Might not be much but it's more then yesterday and a growing process. : )

I hope to meet many new, friendly people here on this same path. It's a hard road but I'm determined to succeed. This is my life now and I will make it work!:seeya:

*Yaaaaawn* I've been up since 5am. I don't know why, I might even try to lay back down in a few minutes. I need more rest! : ) I usually wake up at 6am (I have an inner clock *beep* *beep* *beep*) which isn't so bad but later on today I'll be dragging.

Today is the first test. Ugh. I'm on call for four days, I'm planning in advance how I will keep my calories low. It's not easy when you have no clue when you are going to eat and when flying around you never know when you are going to have time to eat. Also *fingers crossed big time* I'm hoping to get a trip that starts tomorrow. 8 days long and takes away two of my days off but it has some really fabulous flights. I'll let you know if I get it. : )

So since I see everyone else doing this I thought I would do it too!

1. What is your current height and weight?
I am 5'3 (woohooo) and starting weight was 180, I'm at 175 my highest weight ever was 200

2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
I'm going to say 125, I haven't been that weight in forever. My first GOAL is 148 pounds.

3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
At least 150.

4. Why do you want to lose weight?
I'm plus size, and through my entire life it has not effected me in a negative light. Being an adult picky eater has effected me far more in a negative way. So for me losing weight is more about health issues, I'm beyond healthy right now (great blood pressure, my heart is in perfect order) but whose to say it will stay this way? I need to lose weight for those reasons and for vanity too! - I'd be a liar if I said it wasn't to look better. I want to look better. : )

5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?
Na, I just want to do it for me.

6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
UGH! My love of Chocolate chips soft cookies! hehe More or less it's the things I face daily. Being a picky eater and being a flight attendant.

7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?
I don't think I have a weight "problem" ... I've been far bigger then this before (200 pounds my senior year of high school) and lost 50 pounds the following year. Slowly they crept back on but this isn't a problem, it's the choices I've made.

8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
Exercise. Watching calories. Not being weak.

9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?
I have (mentioned above) ... I lost my fuel for food. I wasn't hungry as much anymore. Probably because I was eating less! : )

10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?
I gained the weight back because I got lost in habits again. Eating whenver and whatever I could at that moment. Not working out. Self esteem. Eating out of boredom. No matter what it was it was my own doing.

11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?
Diet pills. Don't do them! -

12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?
I'm trying!

13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?
I cook as often as I can. Which isn't often enough. Days when I'm off or "on call" without flying. When flying that's where it's going to be hardest.

14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
I haven't eaten out since the new year. - Once at work though it will happen, I'm hoping to aim for kids meals and chicken breasts.

15. What are your three favorite foods?
Chicken fried steak, COOKIES, mashed patatoes with bacon bits

16. What are your three favorite restaurants?
Cowboy Reds (so southern, so good, soo fatening), Burger King (it can be fast food right?), third ... who knows.

17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?
What what I'm eating, portion control, Not over do it.

18. If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?
I wouldnt' feel like my back rolls are being looked at. I could walk up a flight of stairs without being winded.

19. Do you eat when you are not hungry?
I try not to.

20. Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?
I used to but working to get past that.

21. Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
Uh, no. Thankfully my family is beyond supportive of eachother. I've never been ashamed of who I am or what I eat.

22. Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
Oh god, I have in the past. Thankfully my one and only new years resolution is to look at the better side of things, to be more thankful. If that can't cure my "depression" and hunger then who knows! : ) I have eated from boredom before too. : x

23. Do you eat as a reward?
No

24. Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?
I try not to.

25. What do you normally eat for a meal?
Breakfast: Jumbo Egg, One wheat toaste with butter, one stip of bacon.
Lunch: Meat (several peices of ham, or chicken breast, or burger), wheat toaste with butter, Sugar free Jello
Dinner: Meat, wheat toaste with butter, nuts...
Dessert: If I do have it - Pudding cup.
Drinks: Water

26. What type of snacks do you eat?
Hardly any, if I do I will try to have a jello cup (10 calories can NOT be beaten).

27. In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?
I've been slowly creaping back up into working out 40 minutes daily with TurboJam (amaaaazing workout video) ... I'm just at 20 to 30 minutes daily though.

28. Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?
Wherever I can. Apartment, Home, Hotel room.

29. What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?
Dancing! Uh, I don't like execercising! : x

30. What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?
My birthday is a great goal. Getting down a dress size to fit my new uniform at the end of March.

31. Do you have rewards for certain goals?
Letting my hair grow out and long when I finally hit my weight goal. : )

Hi Brandi,

It must be stressful being a flight attendant. The food options you have must be limited most of the time. Would bringing food from home work for you at all? As far as your picky eating, do you literally get the shakes when you are given salad?

Joe :)

Hi Joe!

It can be very stressful being a flight attendant, but that's usually just in the case of an emergency and those happen so few times my job can be a walk in the park most days. : )

Food options are extremely limitied. I do try to bring somet things but it always depends on how many days I will be gone (which can increase or decrease depending on various reasons ... like weather). It's hard to bring anything that has to be kept very cold. I try though, with a lunch box and dry ice we have on the planes ... however with things like meat I can't even tempt myself to eat it past three days (no matter how long it's been chilled).

Onto the next ... aaaaah!! lol You can hand me a salad and I will look horrified. But to ask me to eat it (and expect like most people, yuck) I shake, sweat and go through complete terror. Sounds silly but imagine people scared of clowns, balloons, fish, spiders. It's all the same in the end. : ) People often think it's just me being picky .. which yes I am being picky but it goes down more into mind.

Now I've responded with half a chapter. Sorry about that. ; )

Hope you have a nice day,
Brandi

Well, I'm really interested in knowing more, so please spill as much of your thoughts as possible.

I'm not trying to be funny here, but do you have a sald phobia? It doesn't even sound like you are a picky eater, so much as a person afraid of the thought of eating salad. Do other foods do this to you? If so what? What do you enjoy eating/ Can handle eating or looking at?

Also I have questions about your career, but I wont bother you with those just yet.

As a side note, would you be able to stomach your food without butter?

Last question first: of course I can! : ) I just love butter, terribly. Something about dry bread gags me. I'm proud I've "switched" to wheat (I'm a lover of white bread). I realize 30 to 60 calories are coming from butter (I don't slatter it on, just a very thin layer) but it's a love of mine that's hard to give up. Working on it though. : )

Oh goodness, do many foods do this to me? Yes. I wont eat anything like pizza, any cheese, vegtables (I know horrible, but my doctor knows and we are working with that). I am anti seafood, and anything that is mixed together (multiple foods mixed ... like eh meatloaf). I don't eat cake (texture is weird), I don't anything "creamy" or "slimy" ... my fear goes beyond simple vegtables. I like food to be "plain" without addons. I eat hamburgers but any meat I do put to my lips has to be well done. When I do have a hamburger it has to be plain and dry, no ketchup (gag) or any other condiment.

And none of that even comes close to what I eat, I could probably write what I will eat in less than what is written above. And while being around food does not scare me away (I was raised in a family full of eaters, and a Mom who made me try many things) the idea of picking it up and putting it into my mouth is where the terror happens. I hope all of this makes sense? I realize many people do not know adult picky eaters. : x

If you want to find out more about it you can also check out pickyeatingadults.com - You can ask more questions too. I don't mind at all. : )

Oh and of course you can ask question about the job, everyone does. I'm used to it at this point. lol

I just wanted to stop in and say hi :) I think its really cool that youre a flight attendant, but I do see where it could be really hard when trying to diet. And btw you're absolutely gorgeous! I cant wait to see how you do on your journey, you seem very determined and I know you'll get there!

Butter is tasty.

Wheat is so much better than white bread. I was very happy when i switched to wheat as well.

It seems like because of your picky eating habits that if you were to eat it would be healthy no matter what. You have no cheese, cake or creamy food intake. Thats a plus. The things that hinder you would be the lack of veggies. Seafood (I hate the stuff) is something I always wished i could stomach, but its disgusting.

I'll check that website when I get home tonight.

Would you mind letting me in on what you eat? I'm pretty curious.

I would just like to say good luck, I also have a very restricted diet but for me it is because of allergies.

I am not sure what you mean about "wheat bread", do you mean whole grain ? as white bread is made from wheat. unfortunately for me ALL bread except pure rye bread is off the menu for me.

Thank you for the support Italian Lady, : )

Joe butter is BEYOND delicious. : D I am so in love with it barely scraping it on is so hard for me. lol I would love to just lather it all over. : ) When I get back I'll be sure to write the things I actually eat (I should still be sleeping now).

Trusylver, I feel ya on those allergies. Thankfully I am JUST allergic to Shrip. Thank God I hate the stuff, we only found out I was allergic AFTER someone dropped a shrimp on my chicken and the juices got on it (I still gag remembering the taste of it). And yes you are right just whole grain. Lol I guess growing up we have always been a WHITE bread family and it was either wheat or white for us. : ) Thank you for clearing that up for me. :D

Soooo yesterday went well! I didn't actually get a workout in BUT I went up and down stairs all day doing laundry, two flights each time. So I spent a "good" ten minutes on stairs. I'm thinking when I'm bored I might just need to go up and down stairs. - I ate very little yesterday : ( I didn't mean for that to happen but so be it. Breakfast was exactly the same as the day before, NO LUNCH - sadly I missed it somehow. Dinner was I made up for it though with two jumbo eggs scrambled two whole grain toasted bread, two bacon strips. Snack during the day was Jello, and of course a dessert was a pudding cup. I doubt I'll ever be able to give up dessert. : x I only drank water as well.

SO today I am off to Amsterdam and Kuwait (I got the trip!). I'm excited but scared for the food. I am determined (DETERMINED!!!) to count my calories and succeed. I'll be gone for eight days so it will be harder. I will Succeed though! - I plan on working out this morning for about twenty minutes before hopping in the shower. I have to be at the airport at 1:45pm and the next time I have a chance to work out will be tomorrow morning Amsterdam time. SO I will have to do it today. I am also planning on flying my ham, bringing my pre-cooked bacon, scrambled eggs, my jellooo and pudding, plus cheerios snack (half cup of cheerios in baggies), oh and a chicken breast, YUM! I have to make sure I have plane on the food, you would NOT believe the crap they serve and the calories that go with it. : /

I'm finally down a pound from pre-holiday season. Yay! : D I've lost seven pounds so far this year. I'm wondering if that's too much though?? I don't want to just lose weight. I want to keep it off and now I'm stressing because I feel like it is going too fast. : / If anyone knows if that's ok will you let me know?

Brandi

Thanks so much for stopping by my journal! :)

Good luck on your weight loss so far! I wouldn't worry too much if it's a lot of weight right now because some of it is probably water weight. Wouldn't that be amazing though if we could lose that much weight all the time? Haha- that would make my life.

Anyway, have a safe trip! Hope it's SUPER FUN! :)

So I am in Amsterdam, whew! I have not counted calories and since we arrived at seven am here and it was around eleven at home my timing is off on food! I did rest for a while when we landed. Then this evening a friend (who is on the trip with me) and I walked around for about thirty minutes in a residential area of Amsterdam.

We are leaving tomorrow around 12 to do the Military Charter to Kuwait. I'm scared! We serve Coke on the plane for these ones (unlike normally we have Pepsi) .. and I looove coke. I wonder if I can last 18 hours (our duty day) and not drink one? Eh, just keep your fingers crossed for me. : )

Fingers crossed.

You can do it! Nooooo, coke! Think about how you would feel AFTER you drunk it. It may taste good going down but that wont last as long as the "oh I wish I hadnt done that".

hi brandi^^

i just read your diary... oh a flight attendant, that sounds sooo exciting =P hmmm and its really odd that food can make you react that way... i know most slimy chewy seafood grosses me out >_< icky!!
