Phoenyx's Final 10 & Journey to Fitness

I really kicked my butt with my workout today. Did one of the Tae Bo Amped workouts that's about 52 minutes long, then the 45 minute Rachel Brice yoga/isolations workout from her DVD. Weights yesterday for upper body, and a lot of yoga on Monday.

I think tomorrow I may just bite the bullet and go check out the rock climbing gym. At least go play on the cardio & weights then take advantage of the sauna/steamroom area. Check out the atmosphere, that type of thing.

Tonight's dinner is salmon with a bit of olive oil, honey and sage drizzled over it, brown rice and steamed asparagus. Yummy!:biggrinjester:

Phoeynx,

Sounds like you had a good day today! :) It seems that those DVD's are working for you. That's something I'll have to try. The belly dancing videos- wow, that must take quite a bit of a higher sense of control over one's body to be able to do something like that.

Rock climbing gym- if you've got strong hands (good grip), you'd probably do very well on the wall. Sauna/Steam room.. Lucky you! The closest sauna to me is around 45 minutes away. Bummer.

Your dinner sounds like it was a yummy one! I'm not much for seafood, but I can imagine applying that recipe to chicken. Hmmm.

When's your next visit to the weight scale? I'm curious on how close you are to your goal, you may be there already. :)

What is the Drs name your colleagues went to? I live near Walnut Creek and would like to look him/her up for an appointment. If you would rather send a personal message for this, please do so. Thanks, and CONGRATS on your life changing habits! Great job on your perseverance!

I signed up for the 1% January challenge, so my next weigh in is Friday. Unfortunately its also close to that time of the month... so I wouldn't be surprised to see the scale go up a couple because of water retention. (sorry, probably an overshare)

Technically I'm 'at' goal at 158... or I'm in the middle of my 5 lb range. There's still some sculpting to be taken care of, so who knows what the end weight will be?

If you apply that to chicken, I'd recommend a bit of balsalmic vinegar too... yum!

LOL, no worries there. My wife's pretty candid about that stuff too, I'm used to it by now. :) At any rate, I remember reading somewhere that when something like that happens, a tape measure is the best way to actually measure the amount loss (body shrinkage).

Balsamic vinegar is one of my favorite stuff. I'm nuts over malt vinegar as well. I like it over fries, over burgers, as well as salads. I'll have to try that on the chicken as well.

I viewed your photo gallery for the first time 2 days ago, and was impressed at how well your skin shrunk along with the weight loss. I remember seeing people on the TV show "Biggest Loser", and was concerned about having excess skin. Seems that in your case, you were able to shrink it all away. Awesome. :) And at some point in one of your posts, you mentioned your age. I was really surprised. You look awesome, you look like you're in your late 20's! Well done!

Cheers,
George

Hmm, those pt exams are so broad that no one book is really going to cover what you need.

I'd honestly start with the NASM book. You can probably find the book online relatively cheap used from amazon or something. If not, a friend of mine has my copy, which I forgot about until just now. If I can get it back after all this time, yea right, I'd gladly mail it out to you.

But the NASM is a pretty easy to read book compared to the rest and it's one of the more highly respected certs out there.

Plus you have me.

I still have some loose skin here and there... but I'm lucky that most of it has snapped back. The places it hasn't, that's where I still have the jiggly bits I'm working on getting rid of. I also have stretch marks on my stomach from gaining weight... not even from having kids! Ah well, nothing I can really do about that I guess but live with it and hope they continue to diminish somewhat. Not like I'll be entering any bikini contests or anything. Maybe I'll talk to my tattoo artist about what we can do to cover them up.

Steve, you're awesome! Thank you. I'll look to see about that book on amazon and elsewhere, and let you know.

So today I decided to check out that Diablo Rock gym I had mentioned a few weeks ago. What a cool place! Granted its mainly geared towards people wanting to learn how to do rock climbing, but the gym area is very not bad. Cardio equipment, free weights (yes, even squat racks!), machines, a few Bosu (Steve's favorite gadget :reddevil:) lurking around, medicine balls... and NOT A MEAT MARKET! What a relief. So I spent about 15 minutes doing a very fast walk on the treadmill, then did some weights...
Squats 1 x 10 @ 65 (to see if my knee would take more)
then 2 x 10 @ 95
Deadlifts 1 x 10 @ 40
then 2 x 10 @ 50
Lunges 3 x 10 @ 30 (15 lb dumbell in each hand)
Standing Calf Raises 2 X 30 @ 60
Lat pulldowns 2 X 10 @ 60 & 1 x 10 @ 75
Rows 3 X 10 @ 40
I had already done a pretty hefty chest, shoulder and bicep workout a couple days ago, so I decided not to push it too much at this point.
Did a lot of ab work, then some stretches (some of those yoga postures are AWESOME for post weight lifting stretches).

I made good use of the steam room after that. Was only able to handle being in there for 10 minutes or so, but I literally felt the moment where my pores opened up and the sweat (not the steam condensation) started to pour out. Felt SO GOOD! Felt warm for the first time in a while. Ironically we've been having a bit of a warm spell here and its been beautiful outside... but I hadn't really thawed out yet. Now I'm nice and thawed.

I am definitely going to enroll at this place. Not cheap, but with all the amenities... the value is there.

Keri, that rock gym sounds amazing! Especially since it's not a meat market -- there is nothing worse than that environment when you're working out. It's so toxic and distracting!

As long as the gym has all the equipment you're going to need, then sometimes cost becomes secondary. It's better to pay a little more and know you're going to have a good workout than pay less and never go because they aren't properly equipped.

I gather you're really serious about becoming a personal trainer!!! That's AWESOME! I'm rooting for you, Keri!

Sounds like an awesome gym... my dad'd an avid rock climber, so I used to be quite into the climbing gyms round here... none had a WHOLE GYM attached :p

Glad you found a good place. And how exciting thinking about becoming a personal trainer, wish you the best :)

You've got that right! The gym my friend's brother is opening up has a much lower monthly rate, but its limited in what it provides versus what I want in a gym. Much as I'd like to support the guy I know, I feel like I'd be cheating myself if I didn't go with the other place. My husband may still join the other gym because he isn't looking for the same things I am. I just don't see him taking yoga classes, but you never know.

I had toyed with the idea of becoming a personal trainer a few months ago, then kinda put it out of my mind. The thoughts are coming back, and I'm feeling like its something I need to do. Wich means a lot more studying! Oh well, it will be beneficial for me to learn more about physical fitness anyway, I can apply it to what I'm doing if nothing else.

It is an awesome gym. The actual 'gym' area may not be overly large, but it does have a lot of good equipment and plenty of free weights. And like I mentioned earlier, it doesn't have a 'meat market' feel to it like 24 hour fitness does. I've heard things about the 24 hour that is close to me that are really unappealing. I could easily see me going in there already grouchy from PMS or something, having some sleazeball try to pick up on me, and having to punch him in the nuts for his troubles. Probably get me thrown out or arrested, and they probably wouldn't at least let me wash my hands first.

It looks like a natural reaction to losing weight for a number of people is to want to get in to the fitness industry. I think that can be a good thing, especially if its people who have 'been there' and can use that experience to encourage and inspire others to, well, get off their ass and get healthy.

Nice workout! :)

Thanks! I need to make it a goal to strength train 2-3 times a week again. I've been doing a lot of cardio, dance and yoga type of exercise, but there's something to be said about getting out there and lifting weights!

Bleh... its getting close to that time of the month again. :puke: That inevitable water retention and cramping has started up.

So today I am going to do an hour of belly dance/cardio work and some yoga to help alleviate the cramping. Focusing on the isolations, especially in the abdomen, really do help. I've heard and read that belly dance was originally created to help women prepare for childbirth, as it really strengthens the abdominal, hip and lower back, and a side benefit is doing the exercises massages the internal organs…helping with cramping during that time of the month.

Last night I made up a batch of the PMS muffins. Yum! Its a recipe I found in the September issue of Women's Health Magazine. No wheat, dairy or refined sugar. Uses oatmeal, brown rice flour, agave nectar & bananas for sweetness, grapeseed oil, walnuts and flax seed. Whether they are really good for PMS or not, they're tasty and not too evil. Even my husband likes them.

Last night's dinner was London Broil that had been marinaded in a bit of Jack Daniel's, then thrown on the grill with a bit of Jack Daniel's mustard glaze, 1/2 of a red potato, and a nice big salad with my own Jack Daniel's Mustard vinaigrette. I have the other half of the potato and some leftover steak for lunch today, and I'll probaly toss another salad together to accompany it.

Can I have a muffin? :)

I have the NSCA's P.T. study book, 2003 edition. I wanted to seriously be a P.T. last fall (2007) but abandoned studying for other projects, and then went back to full time at work. The book is very dry at first. I feel like I'd rather be learning in a classroom from an instructor who is or was a P.T., who could demonstrate on a human being, and have homework and stuff. I love to read, but when it comes to certain things I learn better in a structured environment. Good for you and others who have no problem with it all! To be a Yoga instructor you need to spend a month at the Yoga Center and do all this, then 300 more hours independently and with another teacher or so, which I think is great (although I'm sure the P.T. test is just one piece of the puzzle to be one):

You and others make me miss lifting weights. I truly enjoy it, which is something that I noticed is rare for lots of women. Maureen and you are exceptions, of course, but I noticed a lot of women like a buddy or a trainer to motivate them. I absolutely love going out and pumping iron, however, I adore Yoga much better and it gives me the same results only better, because in weird positions I can reach small muscle groups that I otherwise couldn't target as effectively. but that only applies to Intermediate and Advanced classes--the easier Yoga classes I take are more like great stretch-out ones. Last night I had a Russian Yoga substitute who KICKED OUR ASSES with so many Vinyasas and Dancing Warrior series....it was great!!!

Phoeynx,

You're most welcome.

I still have some loose skin here and there... but I'm lucky that most of it has snapped back. The places it hasn't, that's where I still have the jiggly bits I'm working on getting rid of. Maybe I'll talk to my tattoo artist about what we can do to cover them up.

I've read several online articles about that, and the consensus is that cocoa butter and products with a lot of vitamin E helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks. They don't cure them, but they reduce them. Another thing I read was, that if you exfoliated some of the top skin, by using some kind of abrasive soap.. It'd allow the top surface to regenerate and kinda help conceal the marks by having new non-stretched skin on top.

Another thing I read was, this is not common, but some people have tried Vicks Vapor rub and they swear it works. Hmm.

I made good use of the steam room after that. Was only able to handle being in there for 10 minutes or so, but I literally felt the moment where my pores opened up and the sweat (not the steam condensation) started to pour out. Felt SO GOOD!

Awesome, I remember it took me about a month being in a sauna 5 days a week, before I could handle being in there for 30 minutes. :) I would go in the sauna, sit there for 15 minutes, get out, take a really cold shower and rinse off, then go back in for another 15 minutes.

The Finn has an interesting way of doing it. They first beat themselves with a Silver Birch branch called "Vihta" to increase the circulation. It relaxes the muscles as well, and helps treat mosquito bites. (As a side benefit) Then, they'd put on wooden shoes and sit in the sauna with the wooden shoes. Their saunas are more hotter than what we set it here. (Usually 95-100 degrees)

Then, they'd jump in the lake (even in the wintertime) after being in there for 30 minutes to an hour, and come back and go for a second round. Sometimes, they'd spend the whole night in there, cycling back and forth between the lake and the water.

Entire families go in together there, even their babies. It's amazing. I have a friend in Finland, and she goes in the sauna every day, for 2 hours, and on special events, 3-4 hours!

Anyhow, sounds like you had a great day. That London Broil- one of my favorites. :)

Cheers,
George

Hi Keri.

Thanks for helping keep my forum above water!

:)

I did email my friend to see if they still have my book. I'll let you know what I find out. Like I said in your journal over on my forum though, if you think you'd train in a club, like this gym you're scoping out right now, find out what they require/like.

Great plan!!! It is such a great way to tone and firm!! Not saying you need that... just saying it because that's what many women are after, and they think that weights will "bulk" them up instead!!

I read back and caught the jist of your journey... You have done AMAZING!! Have a great weekend! :)

Awesome, thanks again!

I'm beginning to thing that NASM would be the way to go just by what I keep hearing.

Oh, I need more toning and firming… but I've come a long way from where I was. The best improvement I've seen so far is I've lost most of the 'bat wings' on my upper arms. Or should I say sugar glider? That's what I was feeling like for a while. Still a little bit there, but doesn't look too bad.

I did a lot of weight lifting/body building in my early college days and while I managed to get some great muscle tone, I never got bulky.

What women need to realize is lifting weights is not going to turn them into Bev Francis unless they really really try to look like Bev Francis.

Hell, they probably wouldn't look like Rachel McLish or Corey Everson either… that would take a lot of dedication.

OMG, Rachel McLeish and Cory Everson? You remember them? Rachel and Cory were my idols ... until Cory got really scary looking :D

Bev Francis ... meh, I always thought she looked like a guy. In fact, I thought she was a guy :p Me thinks she was using some anabolics ;)

The bat wing thing gets better the more tricep work you do ... and the fat loss helps, too!!!

Keep up the good work, Keri! I know you'll get there!

Yes, I remember them. And Anja Langer. She was pretty awesome looking too.

Cory was one of my idols when I was doing a lot of weight lifting in the late 80s. I agree, she got a little scary looking there for a while. I just went to her site tonight… she's looking pretty awesome these days. The woman could crack walnuts with her ass, I swear!

You've come a LONG way and look awesome :D I know what you mean because I tend to put on weight on my upper arms and when I lose, they get a little flappy. Yoga has helped a lot in toning them--of course, so did lifting weights. I'm not exactly sure if one was better than the other but I plan to add climbing to the mix! Have a great day!
