People that benchpress at home.....

do you ever get scared? I'm really considering investing one to put in my basement, but it seems that a "good work out" normally comes when you lift something so heavy you need a spotter rather then something you can control yourself... but would you prefer gym or home?

I use a machine. If I was using free weights, I would use dumbells, that way there is no risk of being stuck under a barbell.

i dont think ive actually needed a spotter in a long time. You dont have to lift to faliure. Even some days ago, i was finding my max, dident need a spotter. then i needed to find out how many reps i could do with 80% of my max, dident need a spotter then either.

oh that video was.. well yeah :p

basicly what im saying is that you know when you are really near failing, dont take chanses. And i dont think anyone has died from loading the bar with 5lbs more than they could lift, they probobly ended up rolling it down their body, or just cheating (lifting their ass off the bench) to get it off. The danger occures when someone benching 100lbs loads up 150 lbs..

If you're going to max, I mean really max, you're going to need a spotter. Maybe get a power rack with adjustable safety bars instead of just a benchpress station. That, or have someone in your household spot you. At the most you should be going up only 5 lbs each attempt at maxing, so anyone should be able to help you with that...

Or hell, just ask a neighbor real quick.

Assuming you're training right and maxing in the "standard" way, almost anyone can spot you provided they're given specific instructions (like "don't pull the bar until i can't push it!).

heh yea ive had this problem. im not sure what you call it but the place holder? or whatever the piece is that goes on the end... i put that on before some of the weights so when worst comes to worst (has happened before) i can tilt it so the weights slide off giving me the ability to then lift it back up

lol, thats a smart idea

if you have no spotter, use dumbbells on your bench. Normally I would suggest a smith machine, but they are about 30% less effecient then a free weight flat bench press.

My gym also has a free weight bench, that acts like a smith machine...its simply a power rack and you bench off of the rack. Therefore, if u cannot get the bar fully up, you push the bar backwords into the rack. But power racks are very expensive. It all depends on how much you want to spend and what your goals are.
