Overtrain of abs?

I've been told that the abs are hard muscle group to work and require a lot of patience and hardwork.

With that being said, is it possible to do too much ab work. I am not trying to get a chisled midsection but I am trying to shed the stomach. Is doing ab work everyday too much? How often should I do abs?
 
If you are doing good compound movements with proper form you really don't even need to train the abs directly, however if you do train them, twice a week is really all you need.

And yes they wont show unless you have low body fat.
