Our Accountablity

Four months ago I found out that I am diabetic, at that time I started changing everything, from my eating habits, to working out. Before this competition, I'd already lost 20lbs- so am I doing this just for the competition? No. The difference is that I was only getting weighed at the dr's office, and I'm trying harder now because of the competition. If the competition were over tomorrow, I would still continue with my diet plan and exercise, just not as intense.
As far as my health goes, I've cleared this with my doctor who's thrilled that I'm doing this. I go to my dr all the time and she's constantly checking on my heart, bp, sugars etc- Everything is cool with this as I'm actually doing this smart by clearing everything with my dr. As a matter of fact, I'm calling her tomorrow to get the amount of hours I can exercise in a day so I don't overdo it, because she yells if you do something wrong, and I don't like getting yelled at lol.
One more thing, ALL of us signed up for the Y today, so that it's fair... and my dr, she also goes to the same Y so I know I'll see her there.
It's funny, I have you saying I'm being too serious about this competition and "wishes" saying I'm not taking it seriously lol.... no grey, only black and white haha.
Annette

Awesome Annette, it's really good that you have your doctor's support and she thinks that you're doing everything well. And even better that your doctor goes to the same gym, wow!

The only thing that I was concerned about was the 8 hours. To me, that's a little CRAZY. lol. But if you're up for it, then why not I guess.

We give advice, but we don't really know you, so take what we say with a grain of salt. We're just here to support you! :) And, I'd definitely listen to Wishes over me, cuz the girl has lost over 160 lbs and is still rockin' it. I get a lot of advice off her her website.

But um, anyway, you're doing fantastic. Keep it up.

Today was a good day for me food-wise. I started off the morning with Special K Chocolaty Delight 3/4 cup and 1/2 cup skim milk. I went off and did the football drills again with Dizzle. Today since the ground wasn't as wet, we were able to do the whole routine. I've been sore for yesterday and today but I think tomorrow may be worse. I think the whole thing took about 50 minutes to an hour. I came home and had a salad with ranch dressing. Two cups of lettuce and 2 tbsp of dressing with 1/4 cucumber and 1/4 tomato.
I signed up for a new website today that I'm sure will help with my motivation. This will be the last site I join though because I don't want to be spending too much time in front of the computer, but would rather be working out. The site is Sparkpeople.com and has different little groups you can join and set goals, meal plans, workouts that you can do at home, etc. It's really good and your "profile" is set up kind of like a myspace.
After I got all of that set up we left to get mom(Annette) some workout shoes and join the YMCA. While we were out we decided that since we'd be home later than we'd like to cook and eat, we'd stop for Qdoba. For those of you who don't know what it is, it's kinda like a mexican food Subway. All of the food is fresh and low calorie. I had half a mexican gumbo bowl and a soft shell taco and all of it came to only 595 calories. I'm quite proud of myself today because I only totaled 932 calories and got satisfied rather than stuffed.
Mom is calling me from the other room so I need to go see what she wants, and then after that I'll be doing the 20 minute workout on Turbo Jam and then my workout on the Wii. :leaving:

Lynn

Good going Lynn. Keep it up :D

Annette,
I think competition is good but too much competition... not that good! Also think of this as a bit more long term, yeah maybe Lynn and Drizzle (??) are losing a lot of weight now, but in a few weeks they may not, and you may be one of those that loses slowly and consistently. I am like that, it has taken me almost 18 months to lose 33 pounds, because it is very slow, but I just went on holidays gorged myself in food (I thought) and did not gain anything back! That is what I wanted, to lose weight and keep it off! A lot of people here lose more than I lost in 18 months, in just about 2 months, because they were larger to start with. And you already lost the initial weight (waterweight etc...) while Lynn and the others haven't!
So, don't get upset, of you are eating right and exercising right, it will come off! Plus in the evening I weigh up to 3 pounds more than in the morning! So always weigh in the morning, naked, post-toilet!

Hey ya'll! I'm up and ready to get going. I'll be doing my video blog a little later today but I just wanted to let everyone know that since I am currently unemployed, I am headed to the local plasma donation center. I am doing this for two reasons. First, plasma is part of your blood that restores itself very quickly for a lot of people. For the other part of people, though, they may have illnesses that they were born with or had an accident that makes their bodies require special medicines. These medicines are made with plasma donor's donations. Secondly, at the center that I'm going to you can make up to $80 per week per person if you go twice a week. I needed to come up with a way to pay my bills and add my $20 into the pot every week, so why not help save lives while I'm at it, ya know?
After Dizzle and I get back from donating plasma, we're gonna come home, change, and head out for football drills today. FYI, Dizzle's kinda antisocial when it comes to posting blogs so most of the time I'll just put what he's been up to. Anywho, Dizzle is really sore today. I'm sore too but I'm not letting it stop me.
Just a little update on how I'm doing on food(I only starting keeping a record of it all on 5-16-09...
5-16:1024 calories eaten/1382 calories burned
5-17: 932 calories eaten/891 burned

My goal is to burn more calories than I eat in a day, but being that Sunday is my "rest day", I took it a little more easy.
Can anyone tell me how to add a goal ticker? I have one on SparkPeople, but I don't know how to get it on this page....help?
Off to the plasma center...:leaving::leaving:

Y'all may want to be careful about the number of calories you're getting because if you eat too little you're sort of setting yourself up for failure (that's about as nice as I can put it). I can see you're a bit discouraged by some of our comments, but these are coming from people who have been around here and into weight loss for a while and have come to find out what works and what does not. You are supposed to get a reasonable calorie deficit, but your calories should never be LESS than your BMR (the minimum number of calories needed to run your body while laying around doing nothing).

What you will end up learning is that slow and steady wins the race, and people who take off too much weight very quickly, often put the weight right back on. Its like those people that sprint at the beginning of a marathon, but then end up having to walk or stop cuz they started out too hard and ran out of steam. You will see what I'm getting at as you become sick of doing several hours of exercise and eating very little calories. You will HATE your new lifestyle and will quickly fall back into old habits. Not to be pessimistic, but this is how it tends to go for 95% of the people that follow this track. People get sick of overexercising and starving, so they give it all up instead of learning how to add exercise into your life that doesn't make you crazy and learning how to eat a reasonable amount that supports your body without hunger and deprivation, but also enables a suitable weight. Despite what many people new to weight loss believe, there is simply NO reason to starve, deprive or over-exercise to lose weight, it will come off reliably with a less extreme approach as well! I realize this is not what you wish to hear at the moment..

Hey Blancita,
I totally understand what you're saying as far as new lifestyle vs 'competition'. At least with me, I already started my new lifestyle four months ago. Think of it like this: to get a high impact workout to boost your metabolism a lot of people will do sprints then walk...right now with the competition we're in the sprint phase, or at least I am.
When this competition is over I plan on going back to my 'normal' way, which was how I lost 20lbs in the first place. My 'normal' way consists of eating healthy, not really watching calories (because I tend to eat less than most anyway), having the occasional treat (once ever few months), and 30 min of exercise a day.
Towards the end of the competition is when all of us plan on making the lasting lifestyle changes, not keeping up with this crazy workout/diet schedule.
Some things we've learned through all of this is that fast food=BAD, high fructose corn syrup=BAD, limit sugars (especially in my case with me being diabetic, although I'm hoping that clears up once I lose weight). etc.
While doing the crazy schedules etc, we are LEARNING how to keep it off, all of these things I was doing before the competition and I was losing weight. I'm trying to teach the girls and dizzle these things as we go, so that they are more aware of what is good for them and what is bad for them.
Other stuff we've done is remove all chemicals from the house, including dishwashing stuff, to laundry det, even toothpaste! All of us are feeling better now because of these changes and that is what is important.
I know I appreciate all of the advice, but keep in mind, I've discussed what we're doing with my dr who is happy about all of these changes we've made. We didn't go into this just saying "well, we're going to lose 100+ lbs and then go back to mc'ds" :)

Blah!

Good morning everyone! I'm up early and feel terrible. Mandi also got me sick and I'm coughing up nasties and everything. I can feel it in my throat and my chest.
This morning I am changing up my breakfast a bit. I am having two whole eggs. I like cereal and all but kinda want more protein today.
I hope everyone got to see my confessional on youtube....I'm still trying to get Dizzle to get his done.
I need to got start on breakfast now for myself and my kids. Then it's time to workout! I feel like blah but I'll do what I can.

Lynn

Be careful with eggs as they have TONS of cholesterol in them.

Good going otherwise. :) I seen your confessional yesterday, pretty cool.

Both Lynn and I are sick. I think it's hitting me more than Lynn as she was able to clean and do stuff today where all I could do was lay in bed all day. Whatever this cold is, it's kicking my butt.
I watched what I ate today sorta, but it doesn't matter because I'm so sick I can barely eat anyway. I managed to get 611 calories down me today though (although I have no clue how many calories nyquil has).
I'm going to take one of Lynn's vitamins now so my body can fight this cold better and then lay back down.
Also, I want to say thank you to Lynn for taking care of mommy today and even making a good dinner. :)
Annette

Ahh, your welcome momma! I'm sorry you couldn't eat all of it cause it was yummy. Tonight for dinner we had chicken drumsticks, cornbread stuffing, and instant mashed potatoes. For the drumsticks, I took off all the skin and added a little bit of garlic powder and lemon pepper. For the stuffing and mashed potatoes, they called for things like butter and milk, but all I added was water to both and a little salt and pepper to the potatoes. I was good stuff!

I haven't worked out yet today, but I did clean for a while today. I did dished, cleaned all the kitchen counters and dinner table(my kids were messy for breakfast), swept the floors, did laundry(washed, dried, folded, and put away), and vacuumed. And then I cooked dinner. I feel like I got a lot of household stuff done today, so now I can work out.

I really badly want the Wii EA Sports Active that came out today! I was looking at some of the forums at the site though and my thigh is too big for the leg strap that holds the nunchuck. Someone has a link on there for a wireless nunchuck that would work for those of us that the strap won't fit out legs. Then we could wear the strap lower where it will fit.

I have Turbo Jam in the DVD player ready to go for me. I just have to get the umf to start doing it. FYI, I've been doing really good on my water intake, with the exception of today. I just got so busy today I forgot to drink water. I'm still going to try and get my 150 ozs of water today but I'll practically be drinking water the rest of the day. Off to do some TJ!

hey ladies,
i think your doing great. i was going to suggest that maybe you can read the stickies especially on nutritional info and also if you can look into a few peoples diaries too to know what they're eating and the progress they're making.

i know we're all made to believe that eating less is the way but i've learned otherwise along the way. it's just that i watched one of the confessionals where there was a meal of 2 cups lettuce a quarter cucumber and i think a tomato...it sounded a bit low especially now that your bodies are becoming more active. the body needs fuel ie carbs and protein to help build muscle to help burn fat. if we eat to little what we loose is muscle and water weight and the body goes into starvation mode and stores fat (instead of burning it) and breaks down muscle (of which would otherwise burn fat but cannot since its broken down.)

so please don't be afraid to eat more (the healthy stuff of course) since your all now alot more active, that way your metabolism will stay up and your body can start building muscle (instead of loosing it). again i'd suggest reading the stickies because there's lots of useful info on there on where to begin nutritionally and in case you don't believe the stickies have a look at peoples progress in their diaries and compare with how much their eating.

we really are all here to help because we're all in the same boat and on the same journey. :grouphug:wishing you all the best in your weight loss. xoxo

I found this yesterday when I wasn't so sick.
I'm trying to follow this advice for right now.
What stickys should would read?? under what area?
Ok, I'm off to bed again.. I think the nyquil is helping some, but I still have 0 energy right now from this cold.

Weak moment

I'm bumming out right now cause I feel like I've been doing really well as far as what I eat.... I mean, I'm getting full, getting all the nutrients I need but I feel like I get different stories everywhere I go when I'm searching for nutritional information. I feel proud of myself that I'm able to get full off of lower calorie foods and smaller portions. However, it seems like everything conflicts with each other.
I want to win this more that I ever have anything else because of my health and the money. I just feel like when some of the sites I'm going to says I need to eat more so that my body doesn't go into shock mode, I'm going to get back into the same habits as I had before. I don't want to overeat anymore. I don't want to gorge on sweets anymore. I just want to be smaller and happy. I don't feel happy right now and that's where I need to get myself.
I don't know if I should keep eating the way I am and let myself get full from it or eat the other foods that I used to. I don't know an in between.
If I had the money to go to a doctor and get advice from a professional I would, but I don't have a job and I don't have any money.
For now I'm just going to keep doing what I've been doing. Maybe I'm just too emotional cause I'm sick. I need to relax but I feel like I haven't lost much/any weight. I feel like I have to keep going, for me, not for anyone else. I know it sounds like I'm being selfish but I just don't know how else to feel. I have to do this. I have to win! I have to make this lifestyle change but it's just so hard with confusing information out there...

If you lower your calorie intake and increase your exercise, then that's all that counts. Calories is the ONLY thing that matters when it comes to weight loss. That's it. Calories in vs. calories out.

I can understand that you're overwhelmed from having so many different opinions, but really the calories is the only main thing you have to listen to.

Just figure out how many calories you need. Go here:

Enter your information.

My calories is about 2200 calories a day in order to lose weight. It has been working for me. But do you think that I actually eat 2200 calories a day? No. I eat whatever I want to eat. When I want to eat it. But I add up the calories for the day. And I try not to make it over 2200 calories is all. I do try to get my calories above 1200 calories, because that's the minimum amount. Some days 2200 calories seems like its not enough. Sometimes 1200 calories seems like it's too much. But it's really nice that I have the room to maneuver and do what I please.

Good luck Lynn. Maybe its best you just do your own thing and find your own path.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I really do appreciate it and it helps.
After going back out to the real world after that post I wrote I decided to work out some more. I did Wii Cardio Workout with the prepared workout on Hardcore. It was nice and I even got a little 'in place' jog for the cool down part. Then I decided to get 15 more minutes in after that on another workout under the shape boxing section. I feel revived now from working out(even though I'm still sick). Brand new start tomorrow! :hurray:

Just FYI, I HAVE spoken with my dr about this stuff. The stuff we're eating is EXACTLY what my dr wants me to eat, being diabetic. I know you're not diabetic, but if my dr has said this is the right stuff to eat for me, then you can't really go wrong. When I go back to the dr in a few weeks and give her our fitday stuff she's going to be super impressed.
And just so you know, my dr knows all about you Lynn, we've talked about you and how I am scared that you'll get sick like me, so she'll be jazzed to see that you're in this competition. Not to mention, you'll get to meet her at the gym as she goes to the same gym that we're signing up for.
I know everything out there conflicts, I've been reading it too, but honestly, the basics I got from my dr and if she says that I'm supposed to be eating this healthy stuff in healthy portions, that's good enough for me. The main thing is to make sure you get enough vitamins/minerals and don't eat the bad types of carbs.
If you want tomorrow (if I can talk with my throat hurting like this) I can call the dr and get the numbers we need for calories/carbs etc to make you feel better.
Annette

What stickys should would read?? under what area?

hey ladies,
i hope your all doing better, the cold sounds like it's taking a toll on all of you so hope you all get better soon :)

about the stickies, they are in the nutritional info section of this forum (the first few threads), http://weight-loss.fitness.com/nutrition/5534-nutrition-101-a.html AND http://weight-loss.fitness.com/nutrition/13065-easiest-nutrition-guidelines-ever.html. there are also some more in the exercise section.

i think also the site dreamingblue suggested to help count the number of calories you need a day to maintain your body.

otherwise i think thats all the advice i can give for now, the rest is all upto you. i can understand why you'd definitely want to follow what your doctor says and it sounds llike there's lots of conflicting information out there, and i'm by no means suggesting you do otherwise, let me try to explain.

i guess maybe what i didn't clarify in my post above was when i was saying don't be afraid to eat more i didn't mean add on sweets and junk food and such things...i meant more of the healthy stuff. so for example more lean proteins (eg grilled skinless chicken breast, fish or lean beef (minced or diced) etc). for carbs switch from white to brown/wholemeal rice/pasta/bread etc. also add lots of fruits in your diet as well as vegetables. the good thing with veges is that they are bulky and low cal (but with lots of minerals/vitamins that are good for the body) so you can add them on to your meals to help fill you up.

at the end of the day it's all upto you to decide what nutritional plan you want to choose. i think your all doing great on exercise, and with time hopefully you'll be able to strike a balance nutrition wise. again, wishing you all the best xoxo

So, today I am feeling better than yesterday but have a bit more of a cough. This morning I really wanted to work on my abs because the last 6 days I've been focusing on cardio. I did some measurements on the 17th and then checked again last night(only to see if the leg band for Wii EA Sports Active would fit). The results were awesome and I found out that I've lost 2.6 inches between my chest, waist, hips, thigh, and calf. I'm really excited about that because it means even if I didn't lose any weight at all, I'm losing size! I must be doing something right.
I've been working out fairly late at night so today I'm going to work out earlier so that I can get my metabolism going.
I had malt-o-meal this morning with no butter or sugar. It was quite filling and yummy. I'm really happy that I'm eating things that I want to eat but I'm being more aware of my portions. I think that the important part. I'm still eating what I want to eat and controlling my cravings.
Well, I'm about to have leftovers from last night's dinner. One chicken leg, instant potatoes, and cornbread stuffing. Yummy!!! Then I'll be doing some Turbo Jam! I'm excited for tomorrow's weigh in!!!!
