Omega's journey

Thanks Claudia

Things are certainly looking up here.

I am certainly looking forward to both the bulge reducing and the weight reducing. I weighed in this morning at 11 stone - and that was in my nightie (so less than my normal weighing clothes). That means that my weight has shot up since Wednesday. Since I have eaten minimally - it must be swelling and water retention due to all those saline drips pumping sodium into me non-stop! TOM will not have helped since that turned up days earlier than normal on Saturday morning - it must have been triggered by the shock to my system. Thankfully Rod had made sure that I had sanitary supplies just in case - he really is such a thoughtful treasure.

I keep hoping that Rod will somehow dramatically improve his state of health. I do worry a great deal about that whole side of things. The fact that he will turn 46 in May and his father died from a heart attack due to obesity around the time that he turned 47 scares the life out of me. We have been together for a very very long time (we got together when he was just 22).

I think that the biggest problem is that he would not be able to do exactly as I have done as excessive walking is not really an option for him as he gets such bad gout (and has done so since his 20s). He has actually had a gout attack since Friday so getting to the hospital for him on Friday and Saturday was a bit of a trial for him. I am actually getting about a bit better than him today. I have just been out for a 24 minute walk as agreed with the hospital which went well and he couldnt come out to join me.

I do try and encourage him into healthy habits and he does more things right than he does wrong - but it is very difficult to lose a lot of weight. He hasnt gained weight over the past 14 months which is a success in itself - but it doesnt really turn a situation around.

I keep trying to get him to increase his stepcount on the good days because I am sure that it will help - but he doesnt always want to do as I suggest.

Take care
Love
Margaret

Margaret,

Im so pleased to hear that you are okay! (exept for having the nasty nasal tube etc)
Obviously your health is more impoertant that walking but im sure you will be itching to go out and start walking again.
I hope you are feeling 100% again soon, and that the small gain will be back down to normal after your body gets rid of the extra fluid and swelling.

take care

Glad to hear you're getting about fairly well considering what you've been through.

I think it's pretty rotten karma that Rod's sweetness to you and us was rewarded with a gout attack. No good deed goes unpunished, right? :biggrinjester: Hope he's feeling better soon.

I would not worry about your food eaten at the hospital. One day of that will not hurt you--especially when you'd eaten pretty much nothing for the 2 days prior. I would've been so hungry, I'd have eaten anything I could get my hands on--I'm sure. :biggrinjester:

Thanks for visiting and your good wishes. I certainly have no complaints as to how the recovery is going.

Becky
All is fine here thanks. Good luck for your weighing tomorrow.

Kimberly
I wouldnt go through that again just to get rhubarb crumble and custard. I was ready to eat anything that I was allowed to eat.
Rod and I currently reckon that we are practicing for our decrepit old age. Rod thanks you for your good wishes. We both managed a late morning siesta - watching tv together on the sofa with a duvet over us - so we are keeping challenge commitments in mind.

Take care

Since I'm fairly new to this, I did read quite a lot on here.
I' am very glad your doing better, much better I hope.
How has exercising been? does it still hurt at the odd given days?
Take care and I hope this never happens to you ever again

Hi Margaret,

So glad to hard that you are doing better! I appreciate your position about your husband. My dad used to be overweight, and there is nothing that we wants more for me than to slim down. I know it would make him so incredibly happy, and one of my goals is to someday jog around the block with him. His leading by example truly turned things around for me, and I really believe that the same will be the case for you and your loved one. You are a big inspiration on the forum, you must be like EXTRA motivating in person. Keep up the good work!
Nice to see you back!!!

Carrie

Welcome back Miss AMAZING walker!! I'm so glad to read your feeling better!! Sorry to hear about the hubby and his gout, I know several people who suffer from it and WOW it can be painful!

Maybe soon Rod will begin to walk with you and you both can improve health together! It will just have to be at his time, and I'm sure by seeing all these health issues popping up it sometimes turns a little switch on that some how gets you thinking about your own mortality.

I think you got a great Hubby there that's for sure~!~ OH and VISA-VERSA!!your both lucky!

Take Care of yourself and take it slow!! After all I need to catch up to YOU now, since you bypassed my weight a while back. LUCKY GIRL!!

Hugs and Love
Kim

:eek:Wow! I had no idea so much happened to you recently. I'm sorry to hear about your operation, but I'm really glad you are doing well and home again.

Hope your recovery is speedy and that your post-surgery walking is going well.

Take care of yourself,
Peg

Thanks for visiting.

We always make sacrifices for the challenges. Rod is even having yet another siesta as I type this.

Thanks for your good wishes.
I think that the situation is that at this stage in my recovery walking at a pace and distance that I would never normally consider to be exercise is valid exercise. I simply am forbidden to do the kind of exercise that I did daily until last Wednesday. I cannot do aerobics or anything that includes bending, stretching, lifting etc for at least 6 weeks. I will then have to go to the hospital before I get the go-ahead to do what we would normally consider to be real exercise.
Fortunately - I do have the permission to build up my walking and pace from scratch as long as I do not build it up by too much in a day. It is my intention to get my stepcount back up to 10,000 steps as quickly as ever possible. They do know that I was doing about 11 miles a day and I do have permission to go back up to that as long as I do it with care.
It is only two days since I got out of hospital and four days since the operation so it is all early days. I am taking regular painkillers so am not in pain and I make sure that I do not exert myself at a level that would cause pain.

It is difficult when we wish that people that we genuinely love would make a big change. We can seem judgemental and like we are picking fault - but this is really not the case here. I just wish that he and we could enjoy the benefits of him being healthier. I always need to be sure that he knows that my love for him is in no way dependant on him ever losing weight. I know from my own experience how we all know exactly what our flaws are - and how sensitive we all are about our flaws. I honestly believe that the drive and motivation has to come from within. Eventually we suddenly have that drive and then we can move mountains. I regularly suggest that he takes on his own weight loss project as a full time job as I have done and try to reclaim his health. I actually believe that he would have greater career prospects if he weighed less - as there is so much prejudice about.

Kim
My walking is very limited at the minute - but being restored as quickly as physically possible. Poor Rod is suffering from a severe gout in his ankle today. After 3 days attacking his toe - his toe just improved and his ankle got it. I know that it is his body reacting to the stress of having been so worried about me. I am definitely the stronger and healthiest of the two of us today.

Peg
Thanks. Things certainly have been all go for me. When I was in hospital on Saturday morning I was having visions of you wondering what you needed to buy for this week's challenge.

Take care

I sure missed a lot. In (semi) chronological order - Wow - amazing photos. I agree with everyone about the inspiration you are, in so many ways. You are looking so great, and in general, so slim that I suspect it is only loose skin now keeping your BMI over normal. Camy is right about getting yourself on the waiting list early.

Still I suppose you are not wanting to think about more hospital time just now. Hospitals can be extremely unpleasant places to be sometimes and it sounds like you had one of those times (despite the kind bits). Imagine making you have sugar on your weetbix! I guess after all the no food days they thought it was time to just make sure you started getting a few calories but still for people with weight/food issues all those sort of changes can be more awkward than some others realize.

It's clear that you have not let this be any more than a blip in plans though, so good on you for that. I hope you get past the swelling issue to find that the floating bowel is properly dealt with now.

I love that you have two pedometers. I always thought you had just one superdooper one. I hunted all around here and never found anything at all reliable - not reliable while I'm operating it anyway!! :D And so now I see two is the way to go. Great idea and I'm copying!! :D

Margaret,

I am so glad to see that you are out of the hospital and recovering in the comfort of your own home. Your hubby will come around, when he is ready. My husband has! and believe me he was the biggest couch potato going. He has never been an active person, no sports as a kid, nothing! I have been trying to exercise and eat healthy for the past 3 years. He finally joined me this January and he has lost 30lb of 80lb that he needs to lose. He actually is walk/jogging and weight training as well. I never in a million years thought that he would, but you lead by example. Sooner or later, Rod will want to enjoy a healthier lifestyle with you. When you are set in your ways it is hard to change, but he will.

Get well soon, and in the mean time, I will try to walk for you.

bye for now,:seeya:

I think it's rather sweet that Rod is taking his honorary Omega-3 membership so seriously, and is taking those siestas. I must confess I took a rather long siesta myself this afternoon. :biggrinjester: All this interest in the siesta detour may mean he's ready to join you in the next challenge and weightloss efforts. :D Now if only that nasty gout would go away.

Glad to see you're able to get back into your routine somewhat. I worry you might be doing too much too soon, though. Don't push it too hard. I'm sure you know your limitations, but I worry that you will get scared of gaining weight and might think you're capable of more than you are at this point. :hug2:

Have a great Tuesday!

I would love to sleep some siesta!! But I have to study!!!
Have a great (but easy) day... don;t be afraid of the pounds coming back... even if a few do, you will get rid of them in no time and you do this all to be more healthy, right? Well you will be more healthy if you nurse your "ouchies" rather than lose a pound, but also risk complications!
Camy

Thanks for visiting.

Things have indeed been all go around here. Thanks for your comment on my photos. Camy has indeed given me food for thought and I will probably persue the surgery route there. I will mention it to my GP but have had enough of doctors for a little while.
It is great to be back in control of my food. It is indeed very difficult when someone seems to be insisting that you have something (like cauliflower cheese) that you know will make your weight go up. I will be so pleased when my weight gets back down to where it was on Wednesday. I just havent the heart to update my ticker with my new big weight.
I know that it seems like overkill to the rest of the world - but for me - two pedometers is definitely the way forward. When they both give a similar reading it is like getting proof that it is as it should be. I am obviously having to build my exercise level up from scratch - walking very slowly and not too much at a time. I am really pleased that both pedometers agree that I have done over 10,000 steps so far today. For me that confirms that I shouldnt be putting on weight if I watch my food.

I'm pleased that your hubby is doing so well. He is well on his way to getting there. Thanks for your get well wishes. In many ways I feel really well already. I really have to hold myself back from doing more. It is great that you are going to do my walking for me. I am sure that loads of people on my walking route are wondering where I have got to.

Sweatpea
Thanks for the welcome back.

Kimberly
I suspect that Rod will embrace taking siestas better than he would do tae kwon do or similar. Having said that he has never shown any reticence when it comes to eating salmon or cabbage. I am hoping that his gout will ease up tomorrow. I love having him here with me - but if he goes back to work a/ I will be able to get onto the forum instead of him playing games for much of the day and evening and b/ there will be some annual leave left. I still want to try to get to Greece.

I am being careful not to push the walking too much and need to emphasise that I go so slow - I would normally not count it as exercise. I know that it is valid exercise in my current state of health so I do count it but feel a bit of a fraud. I am really pleased because I have got over 10,000 steps between my morning walk to the shops and my afternoon walk more locally.

Camy
I am being very careful not to risk complications. I walk very gently and go very gently when it comes to bending and stretching. I get the steps rather than stretch or go up on tiptoes rather than stretch at the middle. I have been in touch with the adult education centre and it looks like I will be able to get a refund of my class fees for the next term for both my keep fit classes.

I changed my dressing today and my wound is heeling very nicely. It really could not look better. I discussed things with a pharmacist and have started taking arnica today because I really believe that my main issue is the swelling and I have often found homeopathic remedies to be effective.

Take care
Love
Margaret
