You can run and be muscular, it is just that if you want to be a really fast runner, you cannot be muscular.
So, run and lift weights and have the best of both worlds!
Yes I agree, speaking from experience, you can be more muscular than "just runners" however, we build overall physiques, we will be slower, that is all.
Obviously by your avatar you do triathlons or cycle and run? CypKitty , I used to go to Olympus Gym in Campbelltown and Marks Gym in Camden. Maurice (then then owner/founder) from Olympus told me if you run (not walk) you will run off your muscle the same as fat! I lived in Macarthur for 22 years. I was number 3 in Mark's Gym, all free weights, went back to Olympus and was pressing 372lbs bench. (80 kilo body as I am now)
I have been working out and building muscle since my weight loss, I have only been back at the gym for about 4 months, starting from square one again. I tottally trusted Maurice, he got me started into bodybuilding.
Last Month I was jogging 35klms a week and walking 44klms a week, total 77klms road work. I am doing core at 10am and weights at 3pm, I jog at 7pm. I am finding the running/jogs are toning me better, levelling out the big bumps you get in places when you first start until, you build a physique.
I have just bought and old TCR Zero and am doing 200klms to 300klms road cycling a week to start. (that's not a lot of time on a cycle each week). I have replaced my 44klms of walking with cycling. I am "leaning down". I am still strong and muscular but jogging and cycling as cardio gives me the physique I want, but I still have bigger muscles than the runners who dont do weights and the cyclists who dont do weights!
Because I do weights I have a different physique to runners and joggers, probably what you are looking for as an answer. If you run and run a lot, usually 60klms a week is usual training, take a few pictures now and in three months, then make a decission what you will be!
I also learned from Doctors and Trainers like Maurice, "big weight lifters" cant run for a block or two. I also learned from being a bouncer for a while, they aint got much stamina if you keep out of their way for the first minute or two, they are just like fighting fat people.
I also learned "overweight" means exactly that, whether it is fat or muscle, it has the same "negative effect" on your heart, you need cardio for a healthy heart, like running and cycling. Bigger and stronger is not fitter and healthier, it is just "bigger and stronger" cardio is healthier. I will post some more pics in a month or two, after I have done a few thousand kilometres on the bike and run another couple of hundred and we can measure from my before pics!
After all my experience in life and Gym, I have decided the body want is one that can run a half marathon, cycle a 110klms on a Sunday club ride (my local club's Sunday ride is about 130klms) we train 300 klms a week, other than that to be able to do a Sunday ride! BUT have a physique and muscularity non weight lifters can not achieve, even though it will be less bulk than a full time BodyBuilder, I will be overall much fitter.
Footballers run long distances for training and do heavy weights, they have "stamina and strength", just consider all the plus and minus options, you can still be ripped and muscular if you do both, as I have been for about 2 months now. I could also bench the runners bodies that I jog with, they probably could not bench mine. I pushed 250lbs the other day, so I could probably bench 2 of them together..lol..
