No Pain, No Loss?

So I need to go with the free weights, huh? I'll give that a try. Probably not tonight though since I know I'll be going at peak gym time and the free weight room is packed...

I need to kick up my protein intake but the idea of doing shakes all the time just isn't appealing... Honestly, I don't think there's even any meat in the house except for eggs and I don't feel like supplementing my diet with more legumes or grains currently. I need to go grocery shopping...

Ya know... I don't really know anything about doing free weights.

I'm going to write up some descriptions for someone else in a little bit for the various exercises I recommend for the beginner. You're right, you shouldn't use free weights unless you have an idea as to what you're doing.

I'll let ya know when I write up the descriptions. Until then, just continue what you're doing.

Just a matter of keeping the fridge stocked.

Chicken, turkey, eggs, cottage cheese, pork, beef, etc.

Okay, I hopped over to the store ('cause its really not that far away) and got some chicken. I'm waiting to really stock up until I can go to Whole Foods or any place that sells organic chicken not pumped full of "filler". Its scary what gets put into our meats and its even scarier to me that a lot of those fillers are linked with cancer.

Cancer terrifies me and its a very real and serious problem in my family...

I await more lifting info with baited breath! I'm kind of excited about it.

Steve,
I went to the gym tonight and did about 45 mins on various machines, about 8 mins on free weights (just for biceps, 'cause thats the only thing I know about) and then 16 minutes on an elliptical. I felt pretty good about it all.

I was wondering about target heart rate when doing cardio. Do you happen to know if the whole "fat burning zone" is a myth or not? I can't seem to keep my heart rate low enough to be in "the zone" but feel like I was actually doing something worthwhile.

Val,
Yay Organic! I've been trying to eat organic veggies and diary for the last six years or so. I guess I'd be less poor if I ate the other stuff... but I'll have my health hopefully! I've been really avoiding any diary that doesn't explicitly say organic or rBST free.

If everyone replaces the thing they eat most with the organic or at least chemical-free version, we'd all be better off. :D

I'm having a brownie with my decaf tonight. I'm proud of myself for getting at least this far and I've calculated my brownie into my calories for the day. Yum yum!

I personally think the higher you ramp up the cardio the higher your metabolism works, rather than staying low in that supposed fat burning zone. Either way, just getting out there is a great start!

Forget about the fat burning zone. It's stupid hogwash.

When I'm doing steady state cardio, I keep the pace high enough where I feel like I'm working, but I'm certainly not huffing and puffing. If I liked people, lol, I'd be able to talk to the person running next to me. Follow me?

Shape magazine, talks a lot about Rate of Perceived Exertion - now Im sure they didn't invent the concept but it's where I learned about it...

The Rate of Perceived Exertion is used to gauge your intensity in cardio workouts. Here's what the numbers in our fitness features mean:

RPE 1-2: Very easy; you can converse with no effort.
RPE 3: Easy; you can converse with almost no effort.
RPE 4: Moderately easy; you can converse comfortably with little
effort.
RPE 5: Moderate; conversation requires some effort.
RPE 6: Moderately hard; conversation requires quite a bit of effort.
RPE 7: Difficult; conversation requires a lot of effort.
RPE 8: Very difficult; conversation requires maximum effort.
RPE 9-10: Peak effort; no-talking zone.

Yea, when I trained in gyms, I used this scale quite frequently.

Dammit I wanted to be the first one to comment on that! :p
I like people, but not at the gym. For some reason I'm not friendly and outgoing there--I quietly work out. Unless people talk to me, then I answer. I could NEVER flirt at the gym. Guys avoid eye-contact, I think they're worried I can bench more than them *snicker*

Sorry Sunny!
I know, I spend way too much money on good food. But it's worth it to me--more antioxidants and better for the earth, plus supporting local farmers...
