Newcomer here :)

Hi guys,

Basically for the past year I've been a lazy bum, so I've decided I need to exercise more, and start swimming in the sea, going to the gym, and playing basketball non-competitevly at home.

I've read the pinned thread for six pack and stuff, but I would like, if possible, to get more info from you guys.

Ok a bit about me,

I'm 6 foot 6 and I weigh 15 stone (thought the weighing scales could be wrong so I could weigh less) basically I've always been relatively slim, but have had a bit of a belly, but now I'm starting to get a real proper beer belly, and thats when I decided to something about it, and want to start exercising.

I went to the gym yesterday, but I have never been to one before so didn't know what to do, so I went on an exercise bike for 40minutes, then went on the treadmill for like 20 minutes, and went for a swim in the sea for an hour (though not all of it was swimming, I was relaxing for a bit)

Basically what I'm asking is, what exercises should I be doing in the gym and for how long, and how often should I go to the gym?

What exercises could I do at home?

What food should I be eating, as is I don't eat breakfast, I would have a roll with chicken breast on it for lunch, then various dinners, and then I would probably have a bowl of cereal at 11/12 in the evening, most probably shreddies or wheetabix. I used to snack a lot but I am trying to stop now.

Any advice would be greatly recieved.

Thanks a bunch,

Tim :)

By your post Im assuming you've been very inactive in the last year, were you in decent shape before? Thats a lot of cardio for an ex couch potato.

You need to do some sort of weight training and cardio to get into shape. Do some research about what type of lifting program would be right for you. You should weight train 2-3 days a week and do cardio 4-5 days.

I was relatively fit 1 or 2 years ago, not a major sporting athlete, but I just let myself go due to exams and crap like that and never found the motivation to get fit again until now.

Thats too much cardio is it? is cardio what I need to be doing (sorry I'm a complete noob)

Weight tranining, to be honest, I've no idea about waits, I've only ever used dumbells before :p how much time would I be wanting to invest into weight training, and would this convert the fat to muscle, or just burn the fat and make me a little slimmer?

As I would mind putting a bit on some muscles, like improve my arm strength (I'm naturally strong, but my arms are untoned) and get muscle on my chest/peck area as well!

So weight training is the way to go?

I felt quite fine after doing the gym, I wasn't too tired at all!

Thanks for your help :)

Edit - and btw - is there any cardio exercises I could do at home, as I'm not a member of the gym, and I don't want to spend a fortune lol. I might invest in some weights, but really wouldn't no what type to get, the small ones where you do one arm at a time, or the one where you lie on a bench and lift over your head?

I know, I kniw I sound ridiculously ignorant lol

Thanks again

The only true way you would be ignorant is if you DIDN'T ask, most people are confused when it comes to fitness, and if you don't ask, you can't learn.

Cardio can be anything that gets your heart rate up and is sustainable. Fast walking is cardio, riding a bike. As long as it gets the heart rate up and you can sustain it for 20 or so minutes its cardio.

As far as weight (or resistance) training, all you need is some dumbells. Do a google search on the following exercises all of which can be done with bodyweight or dumbells.

Push ups
Bent over rows
Shoulder presses
bicep curls
tricep extensions
squats
lunges
crunches

Thats basically a simple core weight training workout. Its simple, easy and effective. As you gain fitness your goals may change. Thats working the major muscle groups very basically, but in order to lose a little fat and make yourself stronger you can't really go wrong with these exercises at first. Workouts should change, but this will get you started. Do 2 sets of 10 at first, then after 3 or 4 weeks throw a third set in. 2 or 3 times a week

Try for 30 minutes of cardio 4 or 5 days a week.

this is important... make sure you get enough rest and recover. Work hard in the gym, recover and make progress at rest.

Thank you, you have been most helpful!

Ok so I think I'm going to go to the gym maybe 3/4 times a week, for an hour, and do the excercise bike and treadmill, and when I get less intimidated try some of these weight things where you grab the two bars and pull into your chest (don't know the name) then try to go for a swim afterwards for 20-60 minutes. Then also do a bit of weigh training at home and do the excersises you mentioned.

I think thats enough to start off with lol :p

You've been brilliant thanks very much.

Hey again.

So basically I'm going to the gym tommorow morning, and I want to go 3 days a week, would it be bad if I went to the gym mon, tues, wed everyweek, do I need to spread it out? as its cheap/less people on the days I mentioned. And then the days I don't go to the gym, I can do weight training at home? is that wise?

basically an hour of cardio three times a week in the gym, and then some weigh training with dumbells for short sporadic periods throughout the week?

Can anyone advise please?

Thanks

Edit - I was also readin up on High Intensity Interval Training, could anyone tell me if this would be beneficial to me? and if so, what would I have to do in the gym, just basically go on a treadmill and change the speed settings every so often, or what?

Thanks a mill

hi guys, sorry to bring back an old thread but...

I've been going to the gym 3/4 days a week.

I do 20 mins on excercise bike, resistance 9
20-30mins of weigh machines
10-20mins on treadmill, maybe five mins of which is running
5min on rowing machine

5-10mins in steam room

then 30-40mins in swimming pool, admittedly not all this time is doing legths, i relax in it too.

10-25mins in sauna after the pool

I'm not noticing any difference in my weight to be honest, I fluxuate around 15 stone, I haven't lost weight (or the beer belly) and I haven't put any muscle on. Am I doing anything wrong?

Thanks guys
