Newb with a few ?? longish.....

Hi all, I have just joined my local World Gym, great place, I know quite a few members and they all have good things to say.
A little background to base your answers on.

44 years old, I did heavy physical work for 17 years and have been driving for about 10 now. the driving equals massive inactivity. I have degenerative disc disease, bearable but not a picnic.
I am 6 foot 3-4 tall 200 lbs, I think I can lose 10 pounds at the most.
My goal is to build cardio strength and stamina. Get into great shape.

I have not had a session with a trainer yet, but my wife has been a member for 2 years so she showed me arould the place and all the different equipment.
One thing I'll say for sure, I might think I am 25 years old but now I see that is not the case at all. I would not even have given it a thought to go and workout for 2 hours at that age, even 10 years ago.

I went about my hour and fifteen minute workout, bike, curls, leg presses, lat pulldowns this, that, all with no problem.
This morning I woke up and could not straighten my arms out, I know,,, from the curls. This is the only part of my body in pain, sure I am a little sore but the arms were too much.

The big question is,,, what did I do wrong, and how long should I wait to do curls again. I was going to just go tomorrow and do everything except the arm work.
...........................................................................................................
Any workout suggestions are welcome, I do intend to include heavy and speedbag training into my routine, (hit the bag as a kid and always enoyed it).

Thanks much,, Tony

You should go again and not do the arm work until you feel better. When you're working your body out with weights using machines and what not, you should always rest, and give your body a chance to recover. It makes all the difference. Many new gym goers make the mistakes of over working their body and over training. They be in so much pain that they never wanna go back. I know from experience, as I've been going to my gym 2 months now. The first week slowed my butt down big time. I almost ruined myself, working so hard, and still didnt see any results, lol. Now I pace myself and I"m starting to see results.

Thanks Necia, I am going to my first session with a trainer today. Hopefully I'm sure he'll keep me on a gradual program to get back into shape.

Tony ^_^

your trainer might already tell you that you need a routine, it might look somthing like this
-mon chest,tri's
-tue shoulders,calfs
-wed rest
-thur back,bi's
-fri legs
-sat rest
-sun rest
from the sound of your post it appears like your trying to work your arm's every day. without a good diet and 8-10 houres of sleep, you will have a hard time.

No Dax, I hurt my arms the first time I went to the gym. I went with the trainer yesterday and he gave me a plan to go by, light weight, 3 sets of 15 on all the machines he gave me. Ya know, arms, legs, abs. etc etc. I start with the elliptical or bike, then do the weights, after weights take a break and finish off on the heavy bag and sppedbag, my idea. I went through this session with no pain today and will go tommorow or Sat and do it again. I can only get to the gym on Sat, Sun and one day during the week, that's cool right?

Thanks Tony
