New Year New Me

I'd totally copy the list as well, but I think people would give me funny looks if I showed up anywhere in high heels and a dress.

Awww thanks guys for all the lovely posts (LOL at Mrxian!!!) I'm glad you liked my thoughts. It was a bit of a lightbulb moment for me (one of several I'm experiencing on this new journey to lose the weight).

I did a 500 cal day fast which was surprisingly ok. I felt sharp and awake and aware of every single taste in every mouthful I ate. I didn't actually get that hungry - or if I did, it soon passed. This made me start to rethink the relationship between me, my body and food. Perhaps it really is mind over matter. I've been reading a bit about what kind of repair the body starts to do chemically if you fast a couple of days a week and eat okish the rest of the time. It sounds a bit more maintenance pattern for me but definitely something I'm thinking of exploring further.

So for the time being I'm going to stick to 1500-1800 cals a day with a couple of days a week 500-1000 cals and ramp up the exercise.

So this week:
Mon - 1854 cals
Tues - 1070 cals
Weds - 1830 cals - 420 cals of exercise = 1410
Thurs - 1590 cals
Friday - 1100 cals - 100 cals of exercise = 1000

Not bad considering I am very rarely hungry. Oh, and no potatoes, bread or pasta for the week - UNBELIEVABLE. I feel really good for it - no highs and lows re blood sugar levels, very very few cravings, no feeling of "I have to eat or I am going to faint". I feel awake, not sleepy after lunch. Seriously, I'd have cut it out years ago if I knew that was going to be the effect. All I've had is a bit of brown rice and a bowl of soup with a few noodles in it at one point.

So, now down to 206lbs - a 6lb loss overall in a week and a bit - pretty happy :)

Hey, 6lbs!! Well done!! You are doing great!
I am doing some fasting right now (detox really) - for 24 hours - its almost done!!
I am feeling better already!!

Have a great weekend! :)

Hey Xenon, things are ok thanks! I haven't posted much as my daughter hasn't been well and life has been a little hectic but we are back at home today and I have a few hours to catch up on stuff whilst she is watchign tv in bed.

Justina - what kind of fasting do you do? NO food at all or very reduced calories? I find it difficult to go the whole day without much - I can probably do 600-700 calories without it being awful - I'm wondering whether 2pm til 2pm fasting is an option. My mum read somewhere that some people do that so they can at least have one meal in each of the days but that it still works in a similar way in terms of kicking off the fasting metabolic changes. Anyone got any advice?

Good news - down to 204lbs! Another 2.6lbs loss this week. 8lbs in total! What I'm really pleased with is that my weight isn't fluctuating - I'm not going down to 206 then up a few lbs the next day then down again etc... I think this is because I am genuinely eating smaller portions but also no bread or potatoes. Plus I have cut up most (nearly all in fact) processed food) so I think I am far less bloated, far less water retention etc...

In the last week I have stuck to 1500-1800 cals per day, and had two days where I tried to fast but ended up around 600-700 cals so I am nearly there... No bread or potatoes has made a HUGE difference. I really don't have the large swings between feeling starving and then feeling very full. Or feeling sleeply in the afternoon or like I am going to faint if I don't eat.

Bread and pots are all very nice but I'm not convinced they are worth all of that hassle!!! I think eventually I might reintroduce them slowly for perhaps the weekend or treat nights if I am going to a restaurant but I don't really want them to become the basis of nearly every meal every again. Thinking about it, I used to have something bready for breakfast, then a sandwich or jacket potato for lunch, then probably one or both with dinner. No NO NO!

Next thing to tackle is the sugary snacks - I'm a sucker for a little bit of chocolate or a biscuit. I've managed to work within my calorie boundaries so far but these really make the daily total add up. I've had no diet soft drinks though and I think that has also really helped to get back on an even keel in terms of cravings.

The other thing I need to throw in the mix is some proper exercise. Its very snowy and icy here which makes running difficult right now! I've been walking as much as I can in the working day rather than getting buses etc... and this is adding up to probably 30 mins of walking per day but I'd rather do somethign specific. I hurt my back four days ago - no idea how but couldn't even do the daily pressups I'd promised Trusylver!! Got a bit of catchign up to do!

All in all though, feeling good. 8lbs down has to feel good! Another 8lbs and I'll be 196 which is near my magic 5lbs mark (where losing 5lbs between 200 and 195 makes me look REALLY different - I don't know why but I cross a dress size or somethign and look distinctly smaller). If I can get to that point, I'll feel great. So, aims:

5 Jan - 212
11 Jan - 206
18 Jan - 204

25 Jan - 202

1 Feb - 200

8 Feb - 198

15 Feb - 196

1 March - 192

15 March - 188

30 March - 184

2 Months of very steady/gradual weight loss and I could be back in my very snazzy small-bum suits with snappy shirts and high heels. God why didn't I do this months ago?!?! I have a very nice pair of motorbike jeans that are way too small for me that I want to fit into by the time its spring/summer and I get my bike out of the garage. That is my aim! A precusor to buying some really tight fitting leathers (which I will do if I ever get down to a size 12!).

hey - well done on your weight-loss - it's really going down! Btw - you will get down to 12!! Totally!!! :D

Fasting- I do eat :) It' like a weekend detox for me.
First day I have a light breakfast - making sure I have fiber & fruit, herbal tea. Then i have wheat grass shot (double) :ack2: not so yummy
I make sure I drink plenty of water. I have green leaf based salad for lunch (rice salad, Greek salad etc - just making sure there are plenty of veggies.) Then I don't eat in the afternoon. I drink my pink grapefruit juices (as described in the product I am using for detox - the product is basically a mix a different herbs like pumpkin seed etc - I have to mix it in with grapefruit juice.) I drink loads of water. Day 2: I have the grapefruit juice thing going in the morning. I also drink herbal tea & water. I have lunch - this time I had tabboulah (parsley/bulghur salad but any vegetable based meal would do) & had fresh veggie juice (kale, apple, cucumber, celery etc) for dinner. i also snacked on some blueberries.
I also do some light exercise - like walking.
This is just the way I do it - I normally do it 4 times a year -(apart from the last year) - and i find it is beneficial for me.

But there are tons of fasting options. Here is another good example:
She is my favorite blogger right now. I learned a lot about nutrition from her.

Hey J- Have you looked into intermittent fasting? It's basically one day a week where you set a period of time (like 3-4 hours) and you eat your calories in that space, then don't eat the rest of the day. That's a really basic view of it- could be something worth looking in to. I know a lot of health/fitness professionals that are well into it- several body builders, a figure coach and a nutritionist! I follow an amazing nutrition blog too, she talks about it here briefly: She also talks about it in one of her books, I think it was 'secrets to a healthy metabolism'.

Well done with the weight loss too, you're roaring through it!

Great job on another 2.6 pounds down!! I need to lose about that right now to get down to my Pre-January weight.

Luzdafuzz>> Most people I had read that do intermittent fasting do it one of 2 ways.
1. Everyday they eat their meals in a specific time frame (Say 4-9pm) or
2. They eat a normal (to slightly high) calorie counts 5 days out of the week doesn't matter what time, then on 2 days only eat like 450 calories

I KINDA do intermittent fasting just cause I don't eat anything before lunch so I have 4 hours before I eat my first bit of food. Not maybe extreme enough to actually be intermittent fasting.

Thanks guys - will go and read up on the link Justina.

At the moment, I was trying a 5 on 2 off pattern (but the 2 days aren't meant to be in a row) where you eat normal cals (I was limiting myself to 1800) on 5 days then 2 days of 500 cals. It's not bad but I can't quite get under 600/700 calories on those days... However, I have heard of a pattern where on your fast days, you do them from 2pm to 2pm the next day (so actually, you get to eat normal for half of each of those days). I think I could manage this easily but need to read up on whether it then has the same metabolic effect.

I might try a limited time frame pattern - I could probably do 2 - 8pm and fit in lunch and dinner in that time but the 2pm to 2pm 2 days a week would suit me better.

Down to 203lbs this morning - W00T! Every lb counts! Even though I did go against my rule of not weighing in every day... Jeepers, if I can get down below 200lbs I will be well chuffed - it will motivate me to keep going...

So been going since 4th Jan and lost 9lbs in 15 days. Well chuffed.

Oh and when I said a size 12, I meant a UK size 12...eek...just a bit smaller than a US 12!! I'm a UK size 16-18 at the moment. 16 is tight, 18 is baggy. Pah.

203!!!! Atta girl! Every pound counts! Right!!!

Thats 3500 calories for every pound you lose. Surely theres some water loss but in the end...a pound is a pound is a pound.

I can't fast. I get too miserable. Everybody around me comments how they wish they had a Snickers Bar (American chocolate bar) to throw me when I get grumpy. lol

So fasting is outta the question.

I glad its working for you!

I see you are sooo freekin close to ONEDERLAND!!! I'll be here waitin for ya with bells on! (Not a great mental picture but you know what I mean!)

Hugs

Anthony

I THOUGHT fasting would make me really grumpy.

In fact, I feel sharp, awake, ready to go get the world. Its really really wierd. I am perhaps hungry for 10 or 15 mins max and then the feeling passes and my body kicks into this alert kind of mode. The first day I did it wasn't the best I've ever had but since then, it's no big deal - I didn't imagine it would be like this as I'm usually right mardy when I've not had enough to eat.

I can't quite get down to 500 cals though. 600 or 700 is ok...I usually crumble and have the last couple of hundred cals in the evening which is why I think 2pm - 2pm might work for me.

I would thoroughly recommend you give it a go - I thought it would be horrible but I love the way it makes me feel...rather than sleepy, bloated, craving food...

hahaha. Bells on...thanks for the image.

Hey, I figured - I lived in the UK for 7 years!!! & I remember having size 12 jeans!! good days!

Well done on an amazing 9 lbs drop - that's fantastic!

Hey - you are doing well on the fastening - you felt good by the end of it too!
If you make sure you drink enough - it's even easier!!

Welllll Hello girl!! I come in here periodically and it was nice to see your face!!! HoorahH!!

Sounds like you are moving right along there!! What's the goal for this week? :)

Urgh. Fell off the wagon slightly... Was intending to do a fast day today...met Mr X for a coffee and he suggested we go for lunch instead and took me to his favourite Thai restaurant. Too much eating. Fun though :)

Don't worry too much about falling off the wagon, as long as you focused on getting back on and carry on with your eating plan. I also had a slight deviation but made sure the next meal I was back on the wagon.

Keep it up you are doing great!

Come on girly pick yourself up & get back on that wagon!! it happens to all of us once in a while!!
Ps/ Thai restaurant - enough said :p - i sympathize
