new to working out....

i just joined a gym friday, and tomorrow I will be going for the first time, and i know nothing about working out or weight training. i need some advice for stretching, cardio, and lifting. im 23, 5'10 180 and have a little gut. i would like to lose the gut, and just tone up, im not looking to bulk up too much. i have about an hour a day i can spend in the gym and i have read that a short workout, about 3 days a week is all one needs...if true please give some more info?? thank you

If you're just starting than keep it simple. Start off by doing cardio 3 times a week for 20 - 30 min and build it up. It's important to warm up and stretch before you get into your workout so hop on the treadmill for five minutes at a slow steady jogging pace then stretch up your entire body then get into your workout.

Eat 5 - 6 times a day and about 3 hours apart if possible. Stay away from simple carbs (found in lollies and cakes etc.) and saturated (solid fats). Complex carbs and unsaturated fat is fine though. Eat protein - probably about .5grams per pound of bodyweight (so about 80 - 100g of protein per day should be enough).

Depending on how much fat you want to lose on your gut you should notice results and when you're happy with your progress start lifting twice a week and get a bit of muscle. And remember - It's next to impossible to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time.
