New to Fitness

Hello. My name is Joelle and I'm a 17 year old high school student. I used to play tennis and ride horses but since then I have quit due to financial reasons and have just recently joined a gym. I met with a personal trainer for an orientation, but he was not too helpful on what to do. I currently weigh 125 lbs and I want to get back down to 115. I am a healthy eater, but am not exactly sure what to do when it comes to starting out on a routine to get a flatter belly, and firm up my legs and butt a bit. Just basically I want to be fit. Could anyone help me out and let me know what to do? I'd appreciate it a lot.

Basic Guidlines for Good Exercise Program

Here is some good basic guidlines to start your workouts:
You should do a cardiorespiratory workout (treadmill, bikeelliptical, etc.) 3-5 days a week for 20-60 minutes. Start out low and work your way up as your fitness level improves. During your cardio session your heart rate should be in between 60-90% of your heart rate max. Your HR max is 220 minus your age and most machines have a HR monitor on them to check your HR. Start out slow with low intensity, maybe just walking. Then eventaully you will work your way up to longer work outs at a higher heart rate.

You should also try to implement a resistance training program 2-3 days a week. You should do atleast 8-10 weight training excercises per session that includes all major muscle groups. I would recommend doing 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps for each excercise since your are trying to flatten your belly and firm up. Eventaully you can work your way up to more sessions/wk. and more excercises per session, these are just the basic guidlines that you should at least do.

Your diet plays a major (if not the biggest) role in determining the amount of fat you're storing. You might want to post your food plan for suggestions.

Here is a guidline: It is unhealthy to lose over two pounds of weight in a week. That means you have to take your time when it comes to losing fat. In my opinion, you should do a full-body workout to acheive what you wanted. By gaining muscle all over your body, you will get firm(legs and butt) and your metabolism increases(flatter belly).:) Eating 6 small meals every 2-3 hours will also increase your metabolism.
