Need to lose 50lbs

Hey guys wuts up.so this question is for my b.f. n heres the story

He was pretty skinny all through highschool .hes 6'3 n weighed about 180 or less. He was in basketball and he was very good so he always played..he also played at the courts in our town he lovedddd basketball n was constantly playing and needless to say its amazingly wonderful cardio and in total he would play about 6 hours or more a day.

anyways he tried college but dropped out and started working an office/warehouse nightschift job..worse worse worse thing ever..he was working from like 4pm. till about 2 in the morning. sitting at a desk ordering pasta n pizza n whatever else w/ his friends that worked there ..then he would get outta work and go to the bar..sleep wakeup at like 1 then do everthing again leaving very little time to play ball ..also him n his friends have always been big beer drinkers so when they drink its a lot

Ive known him all my life since he is my b/fs cousin ( who she lives with) n i started going out w/ him 2 years ago when he was about 20 lbs overweight and it was just growing from there. he quit that job a while ago but 50lbs later here he is at 227 and he really wants to lose weight..

hes going to the gym 5 days a week n were on a low carb diet hes slowed his beer drinking massively. hes always talking about how hes fat n so unhappy w. himself and whenever he picks up his shirt n asks me how hes doing i always say wow great baby ur doing very good just keep it up..but i really just dont see the difference i think i should b seeing for the work hes doing..idk i just think he should b losing more than he is... He does about 30 min. cardio at the gym and weight training he stays for about 1 1/2
i tell him to do more cardio cause thats so important for weightloss but he gets very offensive when i try to give him advice..He'll b like..well u should go on the treadmill too or follow ur own advice or oh well wut about u eating that cookie..and i try to say in a nice way to him that i want to lose 5lbs and he wants to lose 50 n that i dont have to work as hard as him..
we do cheat on the weekends which weve been controlling the last few weeks but not ridiculous amounts....anyyways please help..suggestions on diet n exercise to lose about 35-50lbs....he'll take it from u guys ( especially guyssss) much better im sure...thanks =)
 
ok heres what u need to do if u want huge losses w/o surgery and diet pills. First off eating- you need to eat about 500-600 less calories a day than u normaly do.(ex. u eat 3000 calories a day so now u will eat about 2400 for a while). second off you need to do lots of cardio like running and riding a bike. And keep up the excercising and it should do well. Eat only healthy low fat foods.. no fats, low fat everything, no soda, no candy, less sugar. You need fats, just healthy ones. You HAVE to consume these good fats for your body to operate efficiently and be able to burn off fat. Olive oil, fish oil, flax seed oil, fats from nuts, some animal fat...

Drink lots and lots of water, it is crucial when the body is in a phase of burning fat, and really crucial at all times in life. Drink LOTS of water.

Be careful with carbs, I try to get most of my carbs from veggies, a little from fruit/dextrose, and only a half cup of oats. Potatoes, rice, bread, these aren't bad, but I wouldn't make them a big part of the cutting diet. Placed around workouts, they can be OK. You or him will really just have to do a lot of reading and researching to get info on this.

A solid weight lifting routine is as important if not more than cardio. In order for the weight loss to be fat only, you must lift weights regularly to have your body thinking that it needs to keep that muscle around. Otherwise, it is going to use muscle for energy and that is a bad thing...

There's a lot to cover, read the "Stickies" at the tops of the forums and you will get lots of excellent, free information that CAN be very helpful if applied correctly...
 
One of the first things I'd do figure out what he's eating now. Go to Fitness Equipment, Workout, Fitness Program, Fitness Articles, Beauty Fitness, Weight Loss, Weight Trainingand enter in exactly what he's eaten for even just one day.

This will tell him how many calories he's consuming nor where they come from. Jacobaboba had a good recommendation, but you need a starting point.

You can estimate his target caloric requirements here. Then figure out how to get it below that, as suggested above.

That's really just a place to begin. His workout and routine are an entirely different discussion.
 
thanks guys...well hes got the exercise thing down he does go to the gym about 5 days a week and does very high intensity cardio/ weights..he did actuallyy listen to me..shocking..but he did an hour of cardio today( 25 elliptical/ 15bike/ 25 eliptical) plus weights n he stayed for about 2 hours or more ..=) proud of my baby!!!

the diet is the part that really needs help..as i think about it we do eat fats like cheeses and im gonna cut that out...he basically eats wut i give him n i always cook so i can control it pretty well.. our meals usally vary from, since weve been on the diet, chicken...chicken..and chicken..hehe =) Also, he eats only a few times which from here ive discovered is very bad....like he'll almost never eat breakfast...eat lunch n dinner.
weekends are def awfulll...this weekend my god he was bad..i hate to b like wow u did so bad!!! but damn...
Saturday: he ate more than enough rice ( yellow n not wheat)..potatos..2 peices of keish...a peice of cake..then...saturday night o lordddd...beer w/ his friends from 6 to 2 in the morning..n lemme tell u there was NO break..and omg this PAINSSS me to sayyyyy we got home at 2am n he ate a sandwich..whole wheat bread at least...with quite a few peices of SALAMI..and CHEESE! I would usally call him a fat f*k n make him feel to bad to eat it but he was drunkingly despising me for "being bad luck and making him lose at bowling.." =) so there was no way he would have not started yelling at me and waking up the whole house if i woulda said something

also..he lovesssss water n its all he drinks so we got that one down too
 
Motivation is HUGE! You know exactly what he has to do, and he does too. It's all in the diet and its clear that his "cheat" on the weekend is worse than just a sneak of something small, its a binge, which is why he isn't losing anything.

Hi kimmi,

Just remember - cardio burns calories during the exercise.
Muscles burn calories all your life.

For a man, weight loss (IMO) is easier because of this, us men like muscles, we like to have lots of them, the more the better. And it's true - more muscles burn more calories and it makes you stronger.

Motivation was also a problem for me - I didn't let it go, I searched for it a lot, I read up on it - I made a list of reasons why I should go to the gym, I joined this forum, I signed up to a gym, bought an iPod to listen to music during my workouts, watched videos of people in great shape doing amazing things...

He'll be fine as long as he is consistent and does not give up. Tough love, kimmi, even if he doesn't like it, push him (with reason) to help him reach his goals.

He should lighten up, your only trying to help him ;p

He should come on the forum too :D

Kimmi, How is he progressing?

If he wants, have him join the forum. I'm in the same boat he is (235 or so now, 190 goal) and I'll be glad to "compete" with him and hold him accountable. Just a thought since we both seem to have similar backgrounds and goals. Let me know what he thinks. Thanks, Greg
