My Selfish Year, and the journey to skinny

I broke the humoral head off in my shoulder and also fractured the scapula. I will have to have surgery later tonight to pin the humorus back together. there is also a fracture in my ulna, but less serious...and a fair bit of tissue damage, and nerve damage, I cannot feel my fingers. headed to town for the surgery on the last flight today, hopefully I'll be back in a few days.

Yes, Please carry on with your selfish year and take care of yourself first and then come back and let us know how you're doing.

With my extensive medical background (consisting of several minutes experience with wikipedia looking up where those bones exist and a standard first aid course dating back 20 years ago) it sounds like you might have fallen and almost caught yourself on a single arm which sounds quite painful... frickin' winter!

Oh no! I miss a couple of days and you mess yoself up!

I said a little prayer for you just now but will do a better one tonight.

I hope you are quickly on the mend with a good looking Dr.!

Mending in progres.....

I typed up a ost this morning, one handed as I am now, and it got lost...and the bitter pang of defeat was so overwhelming I had to nap it off before coming back and starting over. I got my head screwed back on tuesday eeeearly morning, and flew home to rest early this morning...not very restful. it is impossible to sleep on ones back when one is a side and tummy sleeper. And, then there is so much pain anyways I cant sleep, or think. so im watching tv.

Brawny, thanks for the prayers, please pray for the (really old and not attractive in the least) doc to give me stronger pain meds ;)

good thing I didn't buy that elliptical, wont be able to unstrap my arm for PT for 6 flippin weeks....6!! how will I survive?

Sorry, that should read early wed morning, not tuesday morning, for the head screwing (sounds dirty)...Ive lost days in my week somewhere...I was overwhelmed when my Mom reminded me earlier that it is already thursday.

I spent 6 weeks in a sling once with a broken collar bone from a dirtbike wreck that started with me yelling the redneck death cry of "Hey yall watch this".

Had to learn to wipe my butt left handed. (pardon my crudeness)

My wife is a physical therapist. (some of her patients call her a physical terrorist)

I bet your gonna get one of those soon too.

Enjoy the pain meds while you can. Sorry you got a busted wing.

oh I am waaay not looking forward to the PT, but, that may be further down the line. just got word this morning that on the 11th I get to go back for an MRI to check my tendon, which I guess is shredded, and they may replace it with a cadaver tendon *shivers* (I see dead people). I had the most uncomfortable night last night trying to sleep. I inalle inflated an air mattress, let a little bit of air out so it "hugged" me a bit and slept like that. it was more comfortable then the bed, but air matresses on a colf floor in winter are just cold beds. So i froze, but at least I was in less pain. I'm going to have to PDSA this and find a solution to the cold air matress, hard bed thing or I wont be getting a good nights sleep for a long time.

Will the air mattress fit on top of the bed? Or maybe lay the mattress on the floor and put the air mattress on top of it?

Wife had hernia surgery a couple years back and we ended up having to use the mattress on the floor so she didn't have to lift our little one around for the 5 weeks she was recovering.

Hey Oldschool, you must have really took a hard fall. Even though the PT will hurt, it's the best thing for you...a friend of mine fell on the ice and hurt her shoulder...she had PT for 6 months...she's finally recovered, but it took while. Also, make sure you do the work the PT says to do on your own (most of us don't do that very well). The electric blanket sounds like a great idea btw to get sleep without freezing. Staying some prayers for you.

Sarah

Oldschool,

so sorry to hear about this!!! But PT will help massive. And you'll over come this!! A few years ago I was diagnosed with acute sciatica... couldn't move or get out of bed for days...and then weeks. But PT made things better, it's rough...takes patience. but you can do it! All the best.

AI've been having a hell if a tough time. This weekend was terrible. I have to fly back to town to have my tendon replaced on the 11th. I'm stuck in my house right now...literally, the doorknob busted and I have to wait till my Dad gets off work o come and free me. After that I need to go to the bodega and get some cheese for our dinner tonight. Other then that, I've a mind to get on the treadmill today and go for a few miles walk. As long as my gait is not too jarring I should be fine.

Damn...Oldschool...if it weren't for bad luck, you'd have no luck at all! God help ya!

The treadmill might do you good...just take it slow and easy!

Sarah

Hang in there kiddo. Eventually things will normal out a bit. Then get goin again. Weather might even improve by then. The real test is how we handle it when life slaps us down.

Musical quote just for you:

'I get knocked down but I get up again, aint nothin gonna keep me down"

Goodmorning all. Gearing up to fly to town for the tendon replacement, I leave Sunday. Got my tickets, hotel and rental car, and appointment schedule...most organized I've been in ages when traveling...normally I just fly by the seat of my pants. Can't do that this time. Now i just have to do a whole bunch of one handed housecleaning and laundry and suitcase packing and then one handed driving in a city...it could be disasterous, lol! See you all on the flip side of all of this, thats when the real healing will begin.
