My Recovery from Obesity

Hey Don, haven't stopped by before, but just spent some time reading through your diary. Wow! You have been doing absolutely fantastic! I so admire your motivation...you are doing absolutely great. I cannot wait to keep up on your further progress and success! Great job!

Holy ssssshhhh.... cow Don!!! You are a losing machine :) keep it up buddy!! Congrats on your dietbet.com achievement!!

Hey Chef Don!! Sounds cool what you made, pictures?

Sidenote - you are amaaaaaazing! & you are my team mate! yay! :p

Don, that is so great. I had a similar idea. Luckily my brother owns all these plates from his power lifting. I have set points where I'm going to carry that weight in a backpack or something. 30 lbs, 50 lbs, and then 100 lbs.
Cory, I picked up a 50 pound sack of grain and another 10lb dumbbell. All i can say is "Good God, that's a lot of extra weight to try and carry up the stairs." I encourage EVERYONE to pick up the pounds they've lost and go shopping or walk up and down the stairs. It's highly motivating.

Your progress has been phenomenal! I don't like competing against you. Our 1%s are 3.2 and 3.9 pounds and you have been losing a frigging pound at a time. I'm going to have to go on the epiphyte diet.
Q, I have NO doubt that when your schedule permits, you are going to destroy us in head to head competitions. I think you will shed pounds like crazy here very soon.

Thank you very much, Camila! I dropped by your diary as well. I'll keep in touch and watch your progress.

Thanks, Mands! I am trying to be realistic with my goals, but don't want to let up on the pressure, either. While my body is cooperating, I plan on hitting it hard.

No pictures this time! Darn it. I made sauteed calamari steaks & seared sea scallops in a white wine reduction, asparagus spears, Caesar salad and a cauliflower puree. It was de-LISH!

The down side is after three nights of eating like a King, I gained 0.6 pounds today. Ah well, it was worth it. I think it's sodium, as I actually ate decent quantities and at the right times of day. Water was a little light, though. Funny thing, I checked my data and I have been UP every single Monday for 4 weeks in a row. I seem to be seeing a trend. :)

Today, should be OK. Tomorrow I'm starting a "specialized diet" for a few days. Healthy breakfast (protein and veg heavy), then nothing but whole veg and fruit or juices for the remainder of the day. This will be a low sodium, zero simple carb, only moderate protein diet for 3-7 days, depending on how things go. I'll also be adding a new (additional) workout to each day. So I'll do a planned workout for strength/cardio/stretching in the a.m. and a cardio workout at night. I'm just mixing things up and keeping my body guessing. Wish me luck.

Oh my goodness...will you please come cook for me?! That sounds so delicious!!! Hah, it is funny, I find that I tend to be *up* on Mondays as well! Anyways, good luck to you on your extra workout and modified diet over the next few days. I know that you will do awesome though :)

(Ok but seriously, invite me for dinner next time! :blush5:)

Have a great week, Don!

Anytime, Camila! :) In fact maybe after we've accomplished some of our goals we can have a big Summertime BBQ get-together. Fortunately (or not, depending how you look at it) I can cook pretty well. My wife and I are both foodies, so we spent many years dining at some great restaurants. When the kids arrived, we learned to make much of that good food at home. NOW, I'm trying to adapt those skills to cook healthy, delicious food.

I'll be interested to see how your specialized diet goes. I have trouble committing to anything like that.

On the picking up something that weighs as much as you lost, it's really a sobering thought. I can't imagine hoisting some runway model over my shoulder and going up a flight of stairs. I don't think the runway model would like it either...

I don't know. I'm having no trouble thinking about a scenario like that at all....

By the way, when you're done losing weight, it'll be TWO runway models. For me, it'll be a runway model, her luggage, and a case and a half of Dom. :)

Here is tonight's dinner: Shrimp and Asparagus Stirfry. I put this on a bed of Curried Lentils.

Eating well does NOT necessarily mean eating boringly.
My wife, who is 5'11 and 165 pounds and needs to lose very little (if any) weight, is LOVING many of the new dishes I've been throwing together in the name of my DIET. :)

Okay, I am officially jealous!!!! That looks and sounds amazing, Don. Cooking is just not my thing...hah. Try and try as I might, my dishes never come out *that* appealing. Great work :)

Hmmm...I'd eat that if it weren't asparagus........if you'd knew. haaaaa...and, i laugh alone.

Keep it up and at 'em. Congrats on meeting your dietbet goal! My goal this week is to reach my dietbet goal!

Hey DON

Your food does not look boring - it loooks appetizing!! :drool5:
I totally agree - eating well does NOT = boring!!
It could be super yummy - all we need is ( a bit of) creativity to spice up our food :D

Good Work Don!

OK, day 2 of rising weight.... I'm up another 0.8 pounds.

It seems pretty easy to diagnose this time. I'm "drifting" in my eating. looking back over the past few days and comparing it to the previous few weeks, I have slowly and quietly been increasing the sodium in my diet and shifting more calories to the evening meal -- making it the biggest meal of the day, rather than the smallest. Additionally, my water consumption has been erratic... I'm still drinking plenty, but too much has been all at once at the end of the day, rather than distributed throughout.

So, today is back to the plan. I ate a healthy big breakfast, I've drunk 1.5 L of water already, and I'll slowly taper the meal sizes and be done eating by 6.30pm today. Lunch will likely be a salad, and dinner will be a veg/fruit smoothy.

By the way, I did a "cardio" DVD exercise last night and it friggin' killed me. I felt good afterward... but man, did I sweat. Today I am sore in the abs and obliques, so that's a good sign. I think tonight's exercise will be Biking again.

Hey hands off the salty food! :D
Joke apart! Good plan going back to the plan. if you drink enough water (you seem to be) - you will get rid of the sodium/retention. Your exercise sounds exhausting. Good job!!

GO CRUISIN' FOR LOSIN' WOOHOOO!

Hey, it's good you can look back and realize what's going on. It means you can rearrange your habits before things get too bad.

Hey Don -

That "exercise sore" is one of my favorite feelings ever! I know that I've definitely put a good workout in if that comes along after! I agree with Cory, it is great that you are learning what is affecting the ups and downs...you are doing a great service to yourself by paying attention to that!

I think I need to learn from all of you and switch my eating habits around. I usually have a small breakfast, sometimes I eat lunch, then have a sizable dinner. I'll have to try it out in reverse!

Great job on the workout and water! Keep going!!! You are doing great!

Thank you Camila! Well, knowing what's wrong and actually fixing it are two different things, so right now I'm working on the latter. I have to say, though, the added workout (I did a Yoga DVD last night) is making me feel sore...but in a really GOOD way! As far as switching meals around, I may be completely full of it, I don't know. But it makes sense to me to that early in the day I should eat larger, more calorie dense meals as I have the busiest time of my day left to burn them off. Conversely, I eat my lighter, greener meal at night so my body can digest it properly and easily overnight.

Yesterday went according to plan. Mostly. :) I ate a big omelet for breakfast, raw veg and hummus for lunch, a boneless, skinless chicken thigh and a banana for dinner. Drank water well and exercised TWICE... not a walk and a bike, but a workout DVD (yes, me... a workout DVD) and a cardio bike ride. I AM SORE. But in a really good way.

Weighed in at 393.6, down 0.9 lbs.

Today's plan is similar to yesterdays. I'll do two workouts again, if possible.
