My Recovery from Obesity

Thanks so much for the boost, Justina and Omega!

This has been a crazy good week from a weight loss perspective -- 9.2 lbs lost in 7 days, including today's 0.6 lbs.

The down side is I strained a calf muscle trying to walk fast uphill, so it's been buggered for a couple of days. I can still ride my bike, but I can't start walking fast at the local track like I wanted. However, I did add some light weights workouts this week, as well as some abdominal (core) exercises with the help of my yoga trainer (my loving wife).

I need to refocus on my eating this week. I still ate OK, but strayed in tiny ways here and there.

Nice work Don! 9% You are kicking my butt! I'm not throwing in the towel just yet. I'm so overdue for a big drop.

Thanks, Quercus! I KNOW yours is coming soon. I'm just trying to put some distance between us to hopefully stave off your surge!

Mind the muscle strains, Don, but excellent work thus far on the weight loss.

Thanks MrVee. I think I got a little excited about recent successes and forgot that it still takes a much healthier, stronger set of muscles than mine to haul my fat a$$ up a hill. I've lost 40 pounds, not 140.

You will shine at 399!

You will be there before you know it!

Man, I hope you're right, Brawny! I'm being patient, because I REALLY want this to be the last time I ever see "400+" on a scale that I step on. I want this to be a one way trip downward.

I said the same thing about 300 back in 09 and so far I have managed to stay below that....not much below a couple of times but still below

I'm officially jealous:D You are kicking ass with your weight loss! Fantastic job!!! You are truely the DON!!

I can tell you, when I hit 299 I got kind of emotional. I'm certain the 300s are in my rear view mirror now.

I'm sorry about the muscle strain. Pain is never good...

There is a good side to having muscles that have coped with a big person too. Focus on that...

The fact is that your muscles have been used to supporting a heavy person - so they will find life really easy as your weight goes down.

As I lost weight I described myself as a human jumping bean... I had (and still have) so much energy it is silly. You will be the same...

Thanks all for the warnings and concern over my calf muscle. It's still tender, but doesn't seem to affect my cycling. I walk less briskly for now, though. I did another HIIT Cycling regimen last night... my best yet, at 23' and 6.25 miles. My legs feel AWESOME today! I need more upper body workouts, though.

Ate very well yesterday:
B: 2 egg omelet w/ loads of veg
L: 6 oz. Chobani yogurt
S: 8 stalks celery w/ home canned albacore salad (made with olive oil)
D: 1 Chicken Thigh w/ Thai Curried cauliflower
3 Liters of water

Still lost weight (!!!) but it is definitely slowing down... I was down 0.6 lbs for the second day running. This eight day losing streak has been ridiculous! I hope anyone reading this knows that I am fully aware of how fortunate I am that (a) the ball is rolling right now, and (b) it will likely screech to a halt soon. But as long as my body is cooperating, I'm going to eat right, drink water, exercise, and NOT cave-in to any of the short-term temptations I see everyday. When my body fights back, THEN I'll take a small break and celebrate a little. Right now, I don't even sneak a square of dark chocolate.

So, I'm at 415.4... very, very close to my next mini-goal of 415... and a little closer to my bigger goal of 407... the 50 pound lost mark since beginning.

Don, I hope your muscle strain gets better! I hate feeling like I can't exercise. You are soooo close to leaving the 400s behind. Also, your dinner sounds delicious. :D

Don, enjoy the losing streak! Soak it in so it can carry you through the slooooow days. You gonna reach your mini goal probably in the next few days and 407 is just around the corner.

You are doing fab!!!

Hey doing great - your food looks pretty good i have to say! & just as Mands is suggesting: enjoy the losing steak!!!

Thanks Mands and Justina. I really have enjoyed the losing streak. It was a week solid of 1+ pound per day losses. But starting 2 days ago the losses slowed and now today it's almost stopped. The last three days, including today, were down 0.6, 0.6 and finally 0.2 pounds. I know. it's still a loss, but it has slowed...and I think will stop completely for a bit. It appears to be some sort of self preservation mode the body goes through.

Today I'll continue with the same... eat, drink well. I may take the exercise regimen out today, as last night was the 8th straight day with a workout. I still felt good doing it, but maybe I need to give everything a rest.

Don't get discouraged, Don. Plateus are common and things we just have to work through. Your body will know when it's ready to lose a bit more weight. :] Congrats on the losing streak, though.

Thanks, Cory! No worries, though. I am GOOD! :)

This last six weeks has been great and I have no regrets or concerns at the moment.

Thanks for giving me a chance Don. It's no 6 pound rebound, but I'll take it. I'll weigh in the morning.

Dinner!

Here's what I made for dinner tonight:

I had only a few minutes left before it became too late in the day for me to eat again today, and I hadn't eaten in 4 hours, so I scratched this together.
This is typical of the kind of Veg Stir Fry I make 6-8 times per week. Sometimes it's breakfast (topped with sunny-side-up eggs), sometimes it's lunch or dinner (served just as you see it). I try to keep my fridge stocked with all these ingredients daily so I can whip something together at a moments notice.

This one includes Chinese broccoli (spinach or other greens are fine), tofu, smoked pork (bacon works, but watch the sodium), onions, sweet peppers, hot peppers, garlic, carrots and pepitas (little sunflower-like seeds). I seasoned it with black and white pepper, sesame oil, hot chili sauce, and a 1/2 tspn of low-sodium soy sauce. The whole dish from start of prep to serving took 17 minutes. I use about a tablespoon of olive oil to cook the whole dish, and this served three. My serving was about 1/3 of what you see here.

Eating healthy is foreign to many of us, but it isn't any harder than cooking unhealthy foods. Sometimes it's even easier.
