My Recovery from Obesity

One of my favorite sports announcer expressions (I think it was Harry Caray): "The big possum walks late."

I like the POSM name, the idea that we're in the POSM brotherhood... but, man, why does it have to be such an ugly critter?? :)

I have to say, it is AMAZING how the muscles have memory...LONG memories! There is NO way I could do half this stuff a couple/few weeks ago, but after just a few tries, it starts coming back! Keep it going, Q. The ball is rolling.

For whatever reason WGN was a basic cable channel in Amarillo in the 90's. I miss Harry and watching the Cubs lose at Wrigley.

Hey Don!

Great job on the pushups!! I have a bad wrist so they are really difficult for me as well. Props to you for pushing through and getting it. You are really very consistent in your workout and diet regimen (at least from what I can tell here!). I admire that about you so much...and find it very motivating...

Hope it rubs off on me soon! ;)

Hope you are having a fantastic week!

~Camila~

Thanks Camila and Justina! I hope I don't sound like I'm criticizing other pushups besides military style as NOT "real"... I just mean that for me a military style pushup is my goal. I did them into my early 30s, so it's time to bring them back.

Yesterday, I ate well, drank great, did my longest to date bike HIIT routine of 1 hour, did 25 leg lift ab crunches, and did EIGHT regular pushups. I am amazed how quickly I started improving after getting the first one. My short term goal is build up to a set of ten this week, then slowly start trying for 2, then 3, then 4 sets of 10. Lower abs are feeling good, legs are feeling good, back/shoulders/triceps are feeling good. I am going the right way.

Weigh-in was a bonus today. I've been doing alright, but not stellar for a few weeks. I lost 1.6 pounds in today's weigh-in, making this a 3-day run of 3.5 pounds. I feel more back in the saddle today than I have lately.

Today I plan on 2X strength work (more sets of pushups and ab exercises), some curls, and a cardio tonight. By the way, the strength stuff I've been doing is yielding changes in how I look, apparently. I'm tightening up and a few others have commented that I look better. It's been a good couple of days.

That's awesome. Lifting heavy makes me stall or gain at first. Bust out that measuring tape so you can know whats happening if the scale doesn't cooperate. Grats on the 1.6!

Lifting will make you lose less lean body mass, raises your base metabolic rate, makes you look better, and effects your hormonal balance in a make-you-feel-manlier kind of way.

The big possum does military pushups.

Don - Setting those short term goals is a great idea. Gives you something to gradually build up to over time while also helping you get closer to the *ultimate* goal! You've clearly already started to make some awesome progress so keep going! :) You are doing great!

Congrats on the weigh-in!

I know what you mean too about seeing improvement. I'm slowly seeing improvement with my pushups and ab work. It's great.

72lbs since January? You are AMAZING. Now I must read your whole diary to steal your secrets.
You are too kind, Sunflower. Thank you! By the way, I have NO secrets... in fact I talk too much. Ask anyone here. :D

More manly feeling?! Good lord, I already wear manliness like Superman wears a cape! ;)
Seriously, thanks for the measurements tip, I have yet to do that... so maybe I'll make it a project this week.

Thanks, Camila! As big as I am and as far as I need to go in terms of health, everything I do is cut into bite sized pieces. I never would have started if all I thought about was getting to the end result.

Congrats on the weigh-in!

Thanks Cory! Isn't it amazing the memory our body has? I take it slow and build and I am boggled by the changes.

Look what my wife made me for dinner....

Baked falafel in Pita w/tzatziki, spinach and tomatoes....Oh! and a little hummus spread on the pita. Yes, the pita violates my "no wheat products" rule, but everything else is healthy for me. The baked falafel are excellent and low sodium. The tzatziki is home made.... heaven. ONE of these was a huge meal, too.

Well, off to do cardio....

Wow! That is awesome, Don. Good for you. I worked out at the gym today - try to do that three times a week. It shows how my body strength has improved too so taht is good. I do pushups too but don't know if they are military kind. :)

Hi Amy! Any pushups are good, I think, as opposed to none...like was doing. Military style (afaik) are like yoga planks--straight body, on your toes, hands shoulder width apart, elbows in close. I am loving the improvement in how I am feeling after I workout!

Tru, thank you! I really do think of your workouts as an inspiration to improve in my workouts. I once was very strong and would like to regain some of that.

Hi Mystic, thank you! Yeah, it's been an aggressive start. I know there are some on here who say that fast weight loss is bad... loose skin, regaining of weight will happen, etc. I understand that. I don't care, though. I want the weight OFF. I'll deal with other issues as they arise. I am LOVING that pushups are back on my list of "things I can do!"

Great weigh in today, again! Down 1.4 pounds to 383. Total loss to date is 74 pounds. I ate fairly well yesterday: omelet w/ veg for breakfast, Caesar salad for lunch, and falafel pita for dinner. Snacked on raw almonds and a piece of fruit. Drank moderately well... 3-4 liters all day. I did a new yoga dvd and wasn't able to do two moves, but managed everything else. I am SORE in the abs today... also tight in my left knee from cycling (?).

Life is good.

For someone of your size losing that much that quickly probably is not a bad thing. When I started my weight loss plan I lost 10 pounds in a month and since I only have about 40 pounds to lose that's a big chunk!! As you get closer to your goal weight things will slow down to a more "normal" loss and should keep you from developing any additional loose skin and such.
I think you can keep it up with the big losses for now!

Don! 74 pounds is incredible. What an accomplishment! Before you know it, you will be down 100 pounds. I am so happy for you! To hear someone say "Life is good," and truly mean it is a really happy thing. I'm very happy for you and all of your success so far. Cannot wait to see you go even further.
