My outdoor abode of torture

I’m thinking of making a little outside gym in my garden and need some ideas. You need to bear in mine that my garden is tiny (about 10’ x 10’) so things like sledges are out of the question

A couple of things I had in mind:

Sand bags– The only bags of sand I can buy from the hardware store come in plastic bags and I don’t think this is such a suitable thing as they’ll probably get ripped and only weigh about 10kg. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make my own bags that won’t leak?

Water pipe – Something I remember seeing on T-Nation a while back, a guy got a big pipe, filled it about 70% up with water and sealed the ends. As the water would slosh about inside the pipe it would create an unstable load and help with shoulder stability

Can anyone think of other things that would be easy to store and good for outdoor strength training?

Unusual suggestions are more than welcome

Oh ya baby, this is the type of **** I am talking about!!

You gotta get duffle bags or something similar.

You can use a sledgehammer and a small tire. Really sandbags are all you need.

Check out the equipment based articles:

Ah, just put the smaller plastic bags inside the canvas one!!

That's so simple I feel like a dumbass for not thinking of that.

I could buy a military surplus rucksack to put over my shoulders and do squats with!

a jump rope

handstand developement and control

if it's just space and noit money, then get a single long bar and 4-6 plates, and do olympic lifts.

there was a video going around here with this dude doing all sorts of gnarly stuff

I've always wanted to try the slosh pipe, I bet just doing stuff with that will be plenty tortuous enough to hold you over until you hit the gym.

It would be well fun to have some equipment like this, i wish ma garden was closed off a bit more.

Atlas stone! :D

Dont know where you would get one from.

If you ask Evo he has a link to an online store that sells the molds that you fill with concrete to make your own. I think they provided his school with some equipment a while back

I lost the link when I changed jobs

No I meant to hang rings off haha.

Ask your council if they have one laying round. You have wooden telegraph poles anywhere where you are? I do  but where I live isnt modern like london

I like the idea of stones. You can probably take a trip out to a riverbed or rock quarry and just pick a couple of stones up, put them in your trunk, and head home. It does not matter if they are round like atlas stones.

I like the slosh pipe and sandbag ideas. Those are good. The easiest sandbag is (I am assuming you have a store like Lowes or Home Depot over there) just get 20, 50, and 80 pound bags of sand. Duct tape the crap out of them and you have three weights to use. That would not cost more than 10 or 15 bucks over here. (I know you use kilos, but nothing here is in that measurement)

You could probably get a couple of big tires. Set them in the corner and put a piece of plywood on top. Then you have something to load stones and sandbags on to. You can also not stack them and use them as platforms to jump on. (drill holes in them to drain water out)

I know 10' X 10' s not a lot of space, but the tire thing might work.

I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

What I was thinking was getting a lot of the smaller bags of plastic sand bags and then buying a larger canvas bag to put them in, like in the article Tony posted, that way they’d be good variable weights

Also G & Tony, there wouldn’t be any reason why squatting with a rucksack full of sand would be bad is there? It sounds OK to me but I was wondering if the position of the weight could be an issue?

If you think of how farmers work, then mold your training around that, you'll be a beast for sure. Those dudes are always lifting hay like crazy. You can zercher squat the sandbag if you like.

Also you could load a backpack with weight and go hiking.

For the sandbags, I didnt make the super small ones like he did. I made 10lb bags with double contractor bags and duct tape. Then put them into the duffel bags. The other way was to much work.

The smaller bags seem like a good idea. But, in real life you are going to be too lazy to adjust the weight and you will just use the same size sandbag for everything. It is much easier to have a few different weighted bags. Drop one, grab the next and keep going.

Just my observations on how things turn out in real life. :D

Your good to go with that. It will not work like you think either. You will not put it on like a rucksack. It is a pain. You will just haul it up to a shoulder do some stuff, switch shoulders, do some stuff, and drop it to the ground.

Sandbag training will be really cool. When I was training to fight I just used 20, 60 and 80 lb bags. I'd do circuits.

15 squats on each shoulder
10 squat and press
10 presses to each shoulder
10 rows
10 zercher good mornings
10 Turkish get ups

We would do 3 sets through and time ourselves. Trying to go faster through the workout. Changing the exercises every week or so. It worked really well.

If you duct tape the crap out of the smaller ones they can be thrown. And it is fun duct taping stuff a lot.

I had to use duct tape on typhons mother.
