My journey to an improved body...

Well this is my very first diary entry! I posted an introduction in the newcomers section a couple of days ago but my diet officially started today!

Just a brief introduction...
I'm 20 and am currently studying at uni! I've put on more weight at the end of last semester and over the holidays than i would have liked. My goal is to drop about 10-11 pounds, which i know isnt a lot but it's just something that i've got to do for my self confidence because at the moment i feel disguisting! And i've got a pair of jeans i really wanna be able to fit back into :) I'm currently 141 and am aiming to get down to 130, preferably by the start of february which would mean losing just over 2 pounds a week!

My plan is to just adopt healthier eating habits and calorie count and of course exercise 5 times a week if possible! I am a member of the gym at uni so that isn't a problem and am also a member of the dance club so that's a good from of exercise aswell!

I wasn't going to weigh myself every morning but it's a habit i dont think i can get out of because i've been doing it for a long time! I think it helps anyway because it helps to keep me on track!! But i'm going to measure myself once a week.

My current measurements:

Upper arm: 10.5"
Chest: 33.5"
Waist: 28"
Abdomin: 35"
Hips: 36"
Thighs: 22.5"
Calf: 14"

First day:

Weight: 141 pounds

Food:
Breakfast:
  • Healthy balance yogurt
  • Banana
Lunch:
  • 4 rye crackers with ham
  • 2 clementines
  • banana
Dinner:
  • Tuna salad
  • Healthy balance yogurt
  • 2 plums
Exercise:
  • One hour cardio (exercise DVD)
  • 20 minutes conditioning exercises and cooling down/stretching

Conclusions:
I think my first day has gone pretty well! The exercise this morning was really good because there was no one in the house so it meant i could turn the music up nice and loud which is really motivational :)

Day 2 :)

Hello everyone...

Well i think day two has gone pretty well soo far!! :) The scale was two pounds day this morning and even though i know that is just water weight it's still a massive motivation to keep going!

weight: 139

Breakfast:
  • Healthy balance yogurt
  • Banana
Lunch:
  • Four rye crackers with ham
  • Yogurt
  • Two oranges
  • latte
Dinner:
  • Salad with ham (we didnt have much salad left so i wanted to bulk it up a bit so i cut up a orange and put that in! wasnt sure how it would taste... but omg it was soo nice, made it all sweet! lol!)

Exercise: None :( I should've got my bum in gear this morning and done some but i've been packing to go back to uni and wasnt sure i could fit it all in coz its been a busy day! No excuse really tho.

Conclusions: Been a good day food wise but i feel a little guilty about not doing any exercise this morning! Oh well!

I'm off back to university now... i'm soo frigging excited! I really am sick of being at home and i definately need my space back :)

Hi! It sounds like you're off to a really good start. Keep up the hard work! You meet your goal in no time!!!

do you know how many calories that you're getting? If you dont get enough calories then your body will go into starvation mode and you'll not be able to get the weight off very easily. Other then that, it's good to want to lose weight... though I wouldn't call it a diet. Call it a lifestyle change. Diets aren't permanent... lifestyle changes are. You change your eating habits for life, you're good for life.

Keep up the good work on staying focused! And welcome to the forum!

Hello.. just thought i post before i go to bed! I've just got back to uni and been chatting to my flatmate and i'm feeling really posative about everything. She really wants to get fit aswell and we've come up with a plan of when we can go to the gym together, which is going to 6 days a week if we can manage it. It's a great motivation to have someone to go with!

Xorie - thanx for your help and advice, i am aware that i should be looking for a lifestyle change and thats what i'm intending to do. I am aware that i wasn't eating right at all the last couple of months and i wanna make sure i change that. Me and my flatmate have been talking about healthy meals that we can cook together... i am actually really excited about the whole thing... does that sound really sad!? lol!
And i think i need to start taking more notice about how many calories i'm eating because i don't think it's enough at the moment!

Nite nite xXx

hey thanx for visiting the diary. you've great couple ov days so far. well done! keep it up! :iagree: with the above poster though! check how many calories you are getting. i wasn't checking in the beginning but i noticed how i wasnt having enough or too much on certain days when i checked.

10 pounds to lose! can't wait till i'm there! good luck with the degree! we are gonna luk great come graduation time!

;-)

p.s. great job on taking measurements...watch the inches fall!!!!

Day 3..

Todays been another good day :) I've started using fitday to count how many calories i am getting and i realised i wasn't really getting enough and i'm gonna aim at about 1200-1300 a day i think. It seems like a really helpful way of counting calories and it's really easy and quick. :)

Breakfast:
  • Bowl of special k
  • Banana
Lunch:
  • Bowl of tomato and basil soup
  • Two pieces of wholemeal bread
  • 2 Plums
Snack:
  • Healthy balance yogurt
  • 2 clementines
Dinner:
  • Tuna salad
  • 2 clementines

Exercise: none... again! (well unless you can class unpacking as a form of exercise lol) But i'm not going to be able to get to the gym until thursday but after that i'll be aiming to go 5-6 times a week! I think if i just watch what i eat between now and then i'll be ok :)

So i put everything i ate into fitday and it came up as around 1200 calories... thinks thats a massive improvement on yesterday :)

Angel thank you for visiting my diary and thanx for the support :) The measurements are great but the only thing is i've gone and left my tape measure at home... so thats something else to add to the many things my mum is gonna have to send me lol!!

xXx

My daily goal is 1200-1300 also and to get 100g of protein, 25g of fiber and 7 servings of fruits and vegetables.

Day 4... still going strong

I'm actually quite suprised that i'm still on track... i mean i know it's only day four but i always think the early days are the hardest!! Plus my flatmate brought loads of junk food back with her that was left over from christmas! Two boxes of chocolates, two massive bars of chocolate and two tubes of pringles and i havent touched any of it! And to be honest... i havent really been that tempted either! :)

Weight: 138

Food:
Breakfast:
  • Bowl of special k
  • Healthy balance yogurt
  • Banana
Lunch:
  • Rye crackers with ham
  • Caramel latte
  • 2 plums
Snack:
  • Healthy balance yogurt
  • 2 clementines
Dinner:
  • Jacket potato with salad
  • 2 clementines

Exercise: workout DVD - 40 minutes cardio and 20 minutes toning exercises, cooling down, stretching etc.

I'm a bit worried about 2moro because we are having a big night out so obviously i'll be drinking alcohol which is full of calories. But i'm trying to make a lifestyle change and drinking is part of the uni lifestyle and it's not something that i can realistically cut out. But at the end of the day lifes too short and you only get the uni experience once and you've gotta make the most of it! And i'm sure when i can get to the gym 5 or 6 times a week it will all even itself out...i hope anyway :S Plus its not like i go out and get off my face every night of the week!!

xXx

Day 5

Well yesterday went alright really, ate around 1200 calories! The i went out in the evening and drank 3 glasses of wine and one archers and lemonade... but thats not something i'm gonna feel guilty about because there'sno point! Then when i got in i was starving so i ate a bowl of cereal... better than a greasy takeaway! And there was plenty of dancing to hep burn off some of those calories!

This morning i still weighed 137 which was awesome :) And i'm off to the gym in a couple of hours! I will write in again later to report on how today has gone!

xXx

Heya, great job so far!

I wouldn't worry about alcohol every once in awhile, as long as you don't pack away four beers a night or anything, you should be good to go. Plus, if you know you're going to be drinking later in the night, you can manage your calories accordingly earlier in the day to make up for it. :D

Update...

Jeez it's been ages since i have written my diary, i'm gonna try and stay on track with it from now on... i've just been really busy with everything!!

Well since last time i wrote everythings still going pretty well, i'e been tryin my best to stick to 1300 calories a day and have been doing quite well i think!! And i've also started using the gym... and i'm finding it a lot more enjoyable than i thought i would :) I generally do 50 mintes cardio using the cross trainer, bike and stepper! I've not yet used the treadmill to run though because it scares me a little bit lol!! Plus running is one of those things i've never been very good at! I should probably set myself a challenge and start running though! I think i must be doing something right though because i've lost another two pounds since i last wrote which was about a week ago!

Anyway the one thing i can't stop doing is clock watching while i'm on the machines... its soo hard not to just keep looking at it when its right there infront of u and i hate it! I think i'm gonna try and get an ipod coz i think that would give me that extra push and motivation i need! But does anyone have any advice of how to distract urself from the clock??

I'm off the gym again soon anyway so will report later about how todays has gone!! :) Only another 5lbs to go...i know i can get these last few pounds off!! :)

xXx

I usually bring a magazine or something in addition to listening to music so when I'm starting to falter I'll either hype myself up by keeping a faster pace with the music and the magazine prevents me from seeing the timer on the machine. There is a big clock in the cardio area of my gym though that I sometimes glace at, but focusing on the magazine helps.

Yesterday I used a newspaper instead of a magazine. It's a little more difficult, but probably a lot more beneficial than a mag. Lol.

I listen to music, loudly :D I have a treadmill at home, but I suppose you could do this at the gym too, I always cover the treadmill display with a towel. That why I'm not focusing on exactly how long I've been on it, exactly how far I've gone, exactly how many calories I've burned, exactly how much more time I have left... what I do instead, is tell myself "I'm going to walk at 3.5 miles an hour for one song to warm up, then run for 2 songs at 5.5 miles an hour, then walk on the highest incline at 2 miles an hour for 1 song etc etc...." That way, at the end of my by-the-song workout, I look at the display and feel awesome about it. It's like the time/miles/calories flew by since I wasn't constantly keeping tabs on it.

Bad day :(

Well yesterday just turned into a bad day coz i ended up eating chocolate and some other stuff that i really didnt need and shouldnt have eaten! But the whole thing just made me feel soo bad, so i wrote in my paper journal exactly how i felt and hopefully that should stop it happening again coz if i ever get tempted i can just go and read it! And this morning the scale has gone up a pound :(

Anyway theres no point turning a bad day into a bad week and everyone has there days when everything doesnt quite go to plan... so i'm gonna make sure i get myself right back on track!

Thank you guys for your advice on distracting myself from the timer on the machines. I definately think getting an ipod is gonna motivate me coz i love listening to music loud and i'm hoping it will keep me going :) And covering it up with a towel is also an idea i might try aswell... so thank you :)

xXx

hey you've got the right attitude about the 'bad' day. just get back on track and keep it up!

have a good weekend!

;-)

Update...

Well i have managed to lose another pound and stay there for two days which i'm really happy about coz i was just kinda stuck at 135 for the whole of last week... guess i got a bit lazy with my exercise! But anyway i'm back on track now and my lectures have started this week which is a good thing for me coz it means i can get into a good routine! I did two hours at the gym yesterday, an hour step class and then an hour of bodymax which is weight training to music! Felt really good after i had finished, however my back, arms and chest are pretty achey today!!

I'm gonna go and do an hour in the gym 2nite aswell... it just annoys me at the moment coz our uni gym is the smallest thing in the world and obviously everyone has the same idea of getting fit for the new year and its just always absolutely packed out! I'm hoping it wont be too bad when i go tonight coz theres nothing worse than waiting around for a machine to be free coz it just feels like a massive waste of time :(

I'm also going to try and write this everyday... (i think i said that last week aswell haha) But it will help me keep on track and on top of what i'm doing etc etc!

Thank you all for your support.. will try and have a visit round some diary's when i get a spare minute!! :)

xXx

The gym...

So i went to the gym earlier like i said i was going to and just as i thought it was PACKED! And i wouldn't mind but it had signs up everywhere saying limit your cardio workout to 15 minutes if people are waiting to use the machines. Yet there are people with their timers on 20-25 minutes while i'm just stood there like a lemon because nothing is free!! Anyway so i only managed to get in 15 minutes on the bike and 15 on the treadmill and 100 sit ups before i got bored of standing around and went home :(

Anyway sorry... rant over!! The rest of my day has been fine and i've got my first dance lesson of the new term 2moro which i'm really looking forward to! I LOVE dancing soo much!! :) :) :)

Nite all
xXx
