My Journey: Positive Outlook For 2013

Mandy-your diary was the first thing I read on this forum and you inspired me to join :) You have made amazing progress!

Thanks Jade, that's really flattering to hear I inspired you. It's been a long road and I still have a long way to go, but I'm glad I'm helping someone out there. I'll go check out your diary to see what you're story is all about. Thanks for reading! :)

~~

I weighed in at 201.6lb this morning. Up just slightly from yesterday. Another thought ran through my mind last night too. I've been doing a different taebo workout for the past couple of weeks now and there is more focus on your arms in this particular workout. I can already see more definition in both arms (biceps and triceps). I'm wondering if the added weight may be from more muscle developing. Either way, as I said yesterday the inches that I'm losing are outweighing (no pun intended) what the scale is showing. I'll get to onderland one of these days!

I still have my sore throat today, it's worst than yesterday. Unfortunately that means I'll most likely be going over my calorie limit for today. Between sucking on candies/cough drops and drinking hot chocolate (the only hot drink I can do) and eating soup (unfortunate all I have is the cup of soups which are pretty loaded with sodium) I know I'll be over. My weight will most likely be up tomorrow, but I need to focus on feeling better now instead of suffering and worrying what the number will be in the morning. Tonight will also be my rest night which to be honest I'm REALLY looking forward to. I still have to do groceries, but when I get home I'll be showering, putting on my flanel pjs, and just relaxing to some Bruins hockey. It'll be a good night! :)

Good job, mandy!!! Inches never lie, whereas the scale can! I'm still against scales. Although I still weigh myself everyday. I still think they are evil! Lol

I've been weighing daily lately too, or trying to. Trying not to let bad #'s get me down, but I like to do it. Really need to do measurements on Saturday morning, though honestly I don't think there will have been any positive change.

Mandy: I think it is very possible you are gaining weight because of the muscle, which is a good thing! The fact that you are losing inches is really what matters more than the scale and I'm glad you are seeing that and trying not to let the scale get you down.

Sucks you are feeling crappy today :( Take care of yourself, lots of water and rest if you can and hopefully tomorrow will be better. Being sick bites.

Hey,

You're doing great. Yes, muscle does weigh more so it's possible to jump up when gaining muscle.

I hate being sick! Gargling salt water can really help with a sore throat.
A glass of water and a teaspoon of salt (or less than a teaspoon as it tastes horrible in your mouth) but it kills the bacteria and helps it a lot.
You're doing better than me, when I'm sick my appetite grows and I just want to eat everything from... ( no I won't mention the foods, I feel like I'm swearing on here when I mention bad foods lol)

Enjoy your rest nigh

Icy, I've found weighing daily has been a motivator as well as a downer, but I like keeping track of my trends so I can learn more about which foods effect me which way and what happens around my TOM. I'll keep weighing daily, but I'll focus more on the measurements for now. :)

Nostalgic, trust me I could eat a lot today, but I'm fighting the urges. Thankfully, I'm not having to fight too hard as the urges aren't really that strong right now. :)

~~

My food intake hasn't been as bad as I was expecting today. It's all the candies that are killing me right now. LOL

Breakfast was oatmeal (I eat two packets): 260 calories
Cup of soup: 300 calories (but I didn't drink the broth so I'm sure that number is a bit high)
Hot cocoa (two cups): 160 calories total
Chicken parm (frozen): 290 calories
Candies: I'm guessing about 200-300 calories worth (mix of Werther's and root beer barrels)
Total: 1310 calories (went with the high est on candy)

For dinner I'm making what my calls chop suey. It's hamburger, elbow noodles, canned tomato, and corn. I have no clue what the calorie per service is for this dish, but I'm going to have a nice, big bowl tonight so that'll probably push me over. I'm in the mood for something hot and somewhat soupy so this is what I came up with.

I don't snack at night anymore, at least not often at all, so that should be the end of eating for me. Will keep drinking water tonight and maybe some more hard candies (going to look for better options when I do groceries).

My weigh in this morning was not good. At 202.4, I'm up a full pound from yesterday. I think this mainly has to do with the fact that I ate a larger dinner later than usual. I made the chop suey that I mentioned and had a large helping along with some of the freshest italian bread that I've ever had with butter. I'm fully aware that I ate too much, but I'm cutting myself some slack because I'm not feeling 100%. It tasted really good and it was going down so easily. Tonight I'm back at it exercising so hopefully I'll be able to put a little bit of a dent in that number for tomorrow's challenge weigh in. I still think I'm going to be up from last week, but it is what it is.

My throat is feeling a little bit better today. I think whatever is going on is starting to go away. It still hurts when I swallow, but as long as I'm drinking and/or sucking candy it soothes it enough. I'm hoping by tomorrow I won't need the candies anymore. I don't need those extra calories!

I find certain candies help with sore throats, or just chain sucking cough drops. Have you tried chewing gum? That could help too. And I also agree with the salt water gargle, just make sure it's warm water and not cold.

My fiance likes boiled sprite, I guess it's something his mom used to do but I just boil it on the stove to get rid of all the carbonation and then it's just hot lemon/lime water right? Well with some added sugar. Or even just try hot water with some lemon (fresh or juice, I'm sure either would work) and see if that helps sooth your throat at all.

Glad you are feeling a little better today, hopefully tomorrow gets better too.

I'm glad you are starting to feel better. I think it must be a change in weather because Melissa is sick and I feel like I'm coming down with something as well!! Hopefully yours goes away soon! O know its frustrating to go up in weight a bit. But you must take care of your health. :) everything will go back to normal once you kick the cold.

We had chicken noodle soup and grilled cheese for dinner last night. Not the healthiest meal. But its a good winter meal and feels good to you when you feel bad! :) plus its really yummy!!

At this point I'm feeling a lot better. I can swallow with only mild irritation. I'm hoping tomorrow it's all gone. It's always worst first thing in the morning so we'll see what happens.

I did my taebo tonight although I really, really, really, didn't want to. I think it was actually one of my better workouts. Just out of curiousity I weighed myself after working out and my scale is being stupid again. I could tell by the way the numbers were flashing that it wasn't going to be accurate, but it did give me 192.6lb the first 3 times. That's pretty odd! I don't think that can be right because when I was weighed at the Dr's on Monday it showed 203lb fully clothed. I don't see how I could've lost that much in just 4 days. We'll see what it says in the morning.

Tomorrow my mom and I are heading out to go on our final whale watch of the season. I'm so sad. That really is my "me" time where I can just sit, relax, and think. It really saved me this year with everything I had going on. I'm going to miss my happy place. Thankfully in just 4 short months we'll be off to the Dominican Republic to swim with the whales. Something to look forward to! :)

Good job doing your taebo despite not wanting too, seeing the big picture instead of giving in to short term desires!

This weekend’s weigh ins were really weird and probably not accurate. Friday I weighed in at 202.4lb. Friday evening I weighed myself out of curiousity and the scale was being really stupid again throwing off random numbers. I was as low as 192.6lb and as high as 198lb. Yesterday morning after several attempts I finally changed the battery and after a few more weigh in attempts I got 200lb even. Then this morning I had the same issue of having to get on the scale multiple times to get 3 identical numbers, 204.6lb. This afternoon I went out and bought a new digital scale so we’ll see how it goes in the morning. It’s been frustrating as all hell. Not only having the scale problems, but seeing my weight continue to rise with no rhyme or reason. I’m really hating this right about now.

I did great for food intake over the weekend, but I didn’t make it to exercise yesterday. It was our last whale watch which ate up most of the day and then when I got home it was all about the Bruins and Red Sox. I haven’t exercised yet today, but will be later on. I’m also taking tomorrow off from work to go with my mom to get our passports for our trip in March.

Our last trip of the season was a good one. It’s been a very slow season, but yesterday we had 10 Humpback Whales, including two mom and calf pairs. We’re able to individually identify our Humpbacks based on the pigmentation pattern on the underside of our tails. This allows us to follow them and to even have our favorites. One of our whales yesterday was a whale named Echo who is an adult female. She breached twice for us which is really a sight to see! We also saw several seals in the harbor. It was a great way to end the season. Here are a few pics. :)

Note to self. Don't exercise after eating anymore. Exercise before eating! Ugh!

I made it through it, but I didn't feel right. My legs felt like they weighed a ton each for some reason and I got winded fast. I had to pause and rewind a few times. Oh well, it's done and I burned some calories!

Those are great pictures!! I'm glad you had a good time!!
I'm also glad you got your exercise in for the day!! Way to go!!
I hope your new scale works better for you!! :)

Thanks Br!na. It was a really nice day. A bit chilly, but not bad. :)

~~

Today I weighed in at 202.4lb. I'm still lingering at above 200, but I'm going to try not to let my weight get to me anymore. Of course I'm going to be happy to get below 200, but I think it's misleading because I'm putting muscle on while losing fat at the same time. My measurements are coming down, which to me is more important.

This morning I put on my size 16 jeans that I haven't worn in a while. When I fell off the wagon in Aug/Sept I think I put more weight back on and these jeans felt tighter that usual. This morning they felt much looser which is awesome!

I took today off from work to get my passport paperwork filed for my trip in March. My mom and I ended up going to IHop for breakfast. I had strawberry stuffed French toast and homefries. Oh my word... DELICIOUS!!!!! It filled me right up so I'll be good for the day. Tonight I'm probably just going to make a grilled cheese sandwich for dinner. :)

Hi, My name is Leia and I had a similar problem with my scale till I started making extra sure my feet were on it at the same place and I didn't lean forward too far. I don't know if the way I was distributing my weight made a difference or not, but the readings were closer together. :) How is your new one working for you?

I'm thinking of getting a new one too. My doctor told me to only weigh myself on the same day of the week and to do it in the morning. So, I think Sunday mornings will be my day of the week. I had been checking it like 3 times a day every day and he said since I am salt sensitive that it will fluctuate depending on my salt intake.

I loved your photos by the way. That must have been so exciting. :hurray:

I love your attitude Mandy! And you are totally right, the measurements and how you feel are more important than the evil scales. The fact you are losing inches proves you are changing fat for muscle which explains the weight gain. Soon that will taper off and you will start losing fat AND weight, not just gaining muscle. Hope the scale smartens up for you though!

I try not to eat right before working out, just doesn't sit right. I try a few hours before working out if I can.

Leia: I weigh everyday (usually) but I try not to compare to the previous day too much. I officially record on here every Saturday, mostly due to some of the Challenges on here.

Leia, I started a spreadsheet in Excel to track my weight, measurements, and my TOM. I weigh in every morning at around 6am. I put the scale in the same place every time and as far as I could tell, I was standing on it the same way everytime. Who knows… LOL I like weighing in daily as it gives me a feel for what foods affect me which ways and I can see trends, especially around my TOM.

Icy, last night I did wait almost 2 hours after eating to work out. I’ve done that before and was fine and I didn’t eat very much so I’m not sure why it affected me that way. Odd, but from now I’m doing my best to work out before eating.

~~

I think I may have a partial answer on my weird weight fluctuations last week. My TOM started today, a week ahead of schedule. Just when I thought I had it all figured out… BAM… another curveball! Oh well, the sooner it starts, the sooner it ends right?

I did my taebo workout this afternoon and actually had to slow myself down. I was getting way ahead of them program. I guess that’s a good thing. I was really driven today. :)

I had my dinner already too. Grilled cheese sandwiches. I had calorie room for 2 so I had 2. I’m not going to eat anything else for the night unless I get really hungry later. I should be fine though.

Hi Mandy, the pics are lovely.
Yes Tom will do that and then the next 10 to 14 days is Ovulation....me at 52 still get it (now and then) and put on a half a kilo or so.
Hope new scales are good.
