My good days, my bad days, my random thoughts

Last night wasn't so bad. I did eat pretty shitty yesterday, though, so I cut beer consumption in half. I know I went over my normal amount of calories, but I don't think I ended up above maintenance levels so at worst, I just stalled the weight loss a day.

Someone got his sorry ass to the gym today. :D It was an awful workout as far as workouts go. It was about 11:30, my dog was sleeping and I thought, "That's it. I'm going." And I went... with no plan whatsoever. I did some ellipse machine work, did some chest, arm and back exercises and closed it off with some more ellipse... it was haphazard at best. I spoke to my boss yesterday and she is fine with me flexing my time and coming in/leaving early. So I needed to get there, even if it sucked, as to break a psychological barrier (whatever it may've been) that has kept me from going thus far.

So now that I've been, I just need to continue. I'm going to start building a routine and shit to follow. I'll be sticking to dumbbells for as much of my training as possible, I think.

I'm excited to be back at the gym. I think I can really improve myself in there. I just need to get myself informed again and do it right.

I think I might post a few 'before' pictures today as well. I've picked out a couple/few shots from the past year and when I get around to shrinking them, I'll be posting them.

Yay on the weights/workout, even if it wasn't top knotch. That's killer. You just did it. Sounds like a good workout to me. Enjoy the weight training and picture yourself all buffed out and beautiful, that's what I do! (then I avoid mirrors for a while, :blush5:) Good luck tomorrow for your Mom's day meal...

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So yesterday, while at the dreaded gym, I was doing dumbbell curls and I was approaching failure but trying to maintain form and someone dropped a weight, startled me and I instinctively jerked my head that way. I think as I had many muscles tensed up trying to keep my form, jerking my head pinched something in my neck. It wasn't awful at first but got worse as the day went on. And now, holy hell... worst night sleep ever, couldn't move at all without insane neck pain and I can't seem to look left. At all.

All in all, not a good start. :D I've got heat on it now. I can't imagine sleeping like that again tonight. I was planning on doing the gym tomorrow, but I don't know if it'll be weights now.

Went to a stag 'n doe (not sure what you call them in the U.S.) last night and had a few beer. Not too many and all well within calories so thumbs up as far as that goes.

Today is more eating out. I think Mom wants to get some Chinese. What mom wants mom gets today.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers.

I'm officially calling it: I'm under 200!

I don't know if I should do this... giving Coffeebro and the others who joined our challenge this kind of extra info ;), but the official birthday weight: 198.7

It felt f'n awesome. You see it the first time and it's amazing, but you don't want to enjoy it too much because of fluctuations you know that you could very well be back up above by a pound or two the next day. I could still fluctuate above 200, but I imagine it would be brief. I would say this is the first time I've been sub-200 in over 7 years. A great birthday present to myself.

CONGRATS FISH!!!!!!

I hit that milestone at the end of February and I remember how good it felt!!! I am so glad you were able to meet your goal - just keep hitting it.

Sorry to hear about your neck, keep an eye on it, ok?

Oooooo. Bummer. Taking care of yourself means taking time off to recoup too. That sucks...congrats on the appropriate beer consumption and good luck today with the chinese. Its funny you said that because we ordered in chinese last night for my mom's day celebration. Naughty me! Hope your necks doing tons better.

Props on starting the resistance training. If you haven't already, read the "Basic Lifts" sticky in the weight loss thru exercise forum for some ideas on getting your routine together- it was pretty helpful to me on getting the form right on some of those bigger compound exercises.

Shitty news about your neck :( Hope it gets better soon for ya so you can get back to the gym- which by the way, YAY for going to the gym! lol.

Dude, fish Im sorry to hear about your neck. Use heat and cold to get it back to normal. On the other hand its sweet that you boss is leting you have the flex time. Im glad you made it to the gym. Now we just need to keep you from hurting yourself.

Thanks guys (and gal).

The neck still hurts. I was kind of hoping it'd be better by today. I am going to pick up some of those icy hot patches or whatever the hell Shaq is pimping on the tele. Maybe they will help.

I think I'm going to pass on the gym for today even though I did get up at 5am and I did come in an hour early... I'll stick to walking the dog today and maybe do Wednesday/Friday this week. This neck pain needs to go before I pick up any weight.

On the plus, it was good to be in the gym and other than my neck... I feel good. I'm feeling the workout in my arms, chest and back and that's a feeling that I miss. I just need to get comfortable in the gym again and get comfortable with the free weights and all will be well.

Hey Fish just droppin' by to say hi... I haven't been on in a while but you are doing awesome! Sorry to hear about the neck but being able to weight train is great! Your results will be even faster and better now! Did you post pics?

PS Can you fix my diary link on my page? I know you explained how to do it but I'm a little... well, ya know... blonde ;) and I can't remember how to do it. I deleted the diary that it is linked to and started a new one. Your help would be MUCH appreciated! :beating:

Sorry to hear about you neck, that sucks...

:cheers2: to weights tho! I love the "soreness" I get after a good workout with weights.

Take Care,
Sam:)

Hey, Fish. Any updates on the weight training? I've been getting those sore necks after some lifting, too. At first I thought it was bad luck, now I'm thinking it is probably bad form. Don't know. I also try to give a few days of cardio between lifting. Not too many people agree with that, but it's what I do.

I've visited your journal before but I think this is the first time I've actually posted in it. :blush5: Got a lil catchin up to do it would seem . . .

First off, congrats on hitting onederland! That is absolutely awesome and such a great feeling! I hit onederland once (lol, 199 but it was still onderland!) but it was kind of short lived (found out a week or so later I was preg. Oops!) I do remember how it felt to see that number on the scale and I was ecstatic. If I hadn't been in a gym full of people (mostly buff men) at the time I probably would have done a crazy little happy dance. :jump: hehe

Second, sorry about the neck. That really sucks, particularly since you were seriously getting into your groove. Hopefully it is just a little strain and it will feel better real soon. I had whiplash in my neck a year or so ago and what you did is really not so different. I had to go to PT and the therapist put me on this machine that strengthened my neck muscles. Basically, I pushed my head back against this headpiece and lifted weights. (It was a specially designed machine so anyone reading this - please don't try this at the gym!) It was really low weight so it didn't hurt and actually my neck started feeling better pretty quickly. Maybe you could do something similar with a resistance band? Hold it behind your head and slowly (and gently!) push your head back against it. It may work out the pulled muscle you have. *disclaimer: just my opinion, I'm certainly not a doctor! :D*

Hope ya get better real soon and congrats again on the great loss!

Paula, check your PMs. Your new diary link should be ready and waiting for you. Nice to see you posting in here, Angela. :D

It's been a couple/few days since I updated this. I actually wrote up a post last night and I could've swore I posted it but since it's not showing... sweet senility.

Nothing good to report. My neck is still buggered. It's better than it was Sunday/Monday, I think, but still not good. Sometimes it's great and I have almost full mobility in my neck and then for (seemingly) no reason I go to look at something or move in a particular way and it's back again.

I continued walking the dog as before, slightly shorter periods of time because I've been having to work late and had less time to walk him before picking my wife up. I was really hoping to be able to start working out again yesterday. That didn't happen, but I did go to the gym to do some elliptical work just to get to the gym.

Diet-wise things are alright. Not superstar, but certainly within reason.

I have started taking creatine and once I start hitting the weights again I am going to be adding protein shakes as a post-workout meal. I picked up some Elite chocolate whey mix from GNC (had a gift card, woot) and some dextrose from the bulk barn. Lastly, I've been using this downtime to try and plan a proper workout routine so I'm ready to go as soon as my neck feels better.

I've got to figure out sets, reps and weights still, but so far I've got:

Monday:
Back - Deadlifts (barbell), bentover rows (barbell) and pull-throughs (cable)
Biceps - Curls (dumbbell), preacher curls (barbell)
Abs - Crunches, side bends

Tuesday:
Rest

Wednesday:
Chest - Bench press (dumbbell), Incline press (dumbbell), Flies (dumbbell)
Triceps - Tricep extensions (dumbbbell), Dips (bodyweight)
Abs - same as above (depending on if they're recovered)

Thurdsay:
Rest

Friday:
Rest

Saturday:
Legs - Squats (barbell), Hamstring curls (cable/machine), Calf raises (machine)
Shoulders - Shoulder press (dumbbell), Front raises (dumbbell), Rear lateral raises (dumbbell), Shrugs (dumbbell)
Abs - same as above

The hardest part of all of this will just be getting comfortable in the gym. Getting comfortable doing certain exercises. But I'm very, very excited at the possibilities. Even after my shitty work out I felt great (neck aside) and can't wait to feel like that on a regular basis. Though, as I said, I have a tonne to learn and I will be tweaking the above for some time to come I'm sure.

Weight loss is much much slower this week. I attribute that to shorter, slower walks and being generally less-active even at work due to the neck (can't carry computers/monitors/printers around right now). So I'm going to have to bust my balls between now and Sunday to post any kind of appreciable loss.

Hope everyone's weeks are going well!

Hey, Fish, I was trying to remember the Darwin fish from the Hitchhiker series, but couldn't find it. What is the deal with it? The only thing I remember was a Bable Fish that translated.

No, no Darwin Fish in HGTTG. The Darwin Fish is . I wasn't sure why you were putting the two together, so I went back and re-read my journal and see where things went south... then I realized I missed your original question Coffeebro. Sorry about that. Hopefully that's all cleared up now. :D

So neither of you are crazy... well, I don't know if I'd go that far, but your recollection of Adams is just fine.

. The Darwin Fish is

That's what I thought. I've seen that and all kinds of variation of it. People get really worked up over it. Around here, no body is all that concerned, but when I go to other parts of the country, there is such a big debate.
