My freshman 15

Well, I went off to college with an open mind about defeating the odds and actually losing weight during my first semester of college. And...I gained about 15 pounds. Sounds familiar, right?

So now I am at the beginning of my second semester here at Witt, and I have been doing somewhat decent for the last week. Well, no, let me rephrase that...I have been doing better than I was in the first semester, which still isn't too much of an accomplishment since I would literally eat like 3 plates per meal. Cafeterias suck. :(

But like I have said before in the many, many diaries of my past...I won't dwell on the negatives. Instead I am looking forward to losing weight. Honest. I have that feeling, like I'm ready for whatever gets thrown in my path.

Okay, so let's see. I am 19, around 145 (haven't weighed myself recently but will tonight), 5'4". I play soccer at my college, which should have been reason enough to keep the weight off, but I used it more as an excuse to eat a lot, like "Oh, I played 4 minutes in my game tonight. I'm sure I can eat 5 more pieces of pizza and be fine." Yeah, whatever. Right now I am working out around 5 days a week. My workouts are so inconsistent, however, because we are starting up our "post season," and I don't really know the routine yet. Just for a general guide though...

Monday - 35 minutes on ellipticals, 20 on treadmill
Tuesday - Sprinting, basketball drills as a team, Indoor soccer game (approx. 20 mins of intense playing)
Wednesday - 15 minutes on bikes, then a body builder type of lift that my coach has so gratefully made for us.
Thursday - Team Run
Friday - 35 minutes on ellipticals, 20 on treadmill

Saturday and Sunday are hard for me. I haven't yet figured them out, but I'm trying.

So...that's my workout routine...kinda. Diet has been a little all over the place. I don't eat breakfast, which I know is bad, but I just don't have time in the mornings. Lunch. Monday, Wednesday, Friday it is a southern fried chicken spinach wrap (not the best, but better than pizza), lowfat potato chips, a cookie, and a bottle of water. Tuesday, Thursday it varies. Sometimes a sandwich, sometimes soup, a salad. It all depends on what the cafeteria is serving. Weekends have been terrible so far, so as this weekend approaches I want to plan out what I will eat ahead of time.

I wish I could say more in this first post, but I have stuff I need to do, but I will be back later tonight to talk about the rest of my day. :)

I would think your at a pretty healthy weight. You look very thin! regardless we all have our reasons so good luck to you I'm sure that if you want it bad enough you can do it!

Hey lady! I remember when you were starting school last fall... How did your first season go?

15lbs is nothing these days... I think its closer to 50+. And I know you are determined and now that your first semester is over you can move on and get back down.

Does the cafeteria offer ANYTHING healthy? I know on my campus there are alot of other places to eat but its all really expensive.... but it might be worth it to get a few good meals in a week ya know?

Anyway, glad your back!!

Hey, good start on your journal.

I also gained weight my freshman year, lost some the next year. Unfortunately, I've gained more since.

Hi again.

Mom - The picture was from last spring during prom, when I was at about 135. I'm about 13 pounds more than that now, and I know that I'm not fat or anything, just want to get back down to the weight I was when I was almost 100% confident with my body.

MissD - The cafeteria does have this thing called the "Smart market" which is a vegeterian option and usually has like rice with a mediterranean stir fry, or the other day it had veggie shephard's pie. I do get a lot from this area, or I will get a salad and cut up pieces of a chicken patty and eat that. I can be healthy there. It's just a challenge. And mine is a small college with no restaurants on campus, and I have no car, so I eat at the cafeteria almost every night.

Scrambledeggs - I love to write in these journals. It somehow keeps me motivated to lose the weight. And your story sounds a lot like mine. My weight has fluctuated so much over the last 3 years. It's crazy.

Okay so I'm about to head off to conditioning, which always kicks my butt, especially the suicides :(, but I will be back to talk about how my last 2 days have gone later tonight.

Wow!! What a crazy morning this has been!

I came back to my room a few minutes ago to find one of my friends crying. I guess she borrowed another one of my friend's car to go see her grandma, who just fell and needs a hip replacement, slid out on the road and crashed into a sign. She is okay, just shaken up and feels terribly about crashing her friend's car. I just can't believe that that actually happened because you always think about it but don't actually think it will.

Okay so on to my workout/lunch. We had team conditioning today. Our coach has us do a lot of basketball drills (passing, guarding, dribbling), we played handball, and we did suicides. I was sweating like crazy at the end though, which is always a good sign. Then I went to the cafeteria for lunch and had a salad with spinach, carrots, some cheese, cut up chicken patty, and honey mustard....and a few curly fries (darn).

I feel good, and I have an indoor game tonight at 11. Can't wait. haha

Hey there :)

Glad to see your back. I just started school up a few weeks ago and I haven't been working out like I should. I'm trying to watch my diet and keep things in check but it's hard...

Hope to see ya around on here more.

-Sam

Hi there! I just graduated from college this past June so I know how hard it can be to eat healthy AND lose weight while in school. It definitely is possible though. I'll be here to cheer ya on! Good luck in your game tonight! :)

Hello
Good luck on your fitness quest. I was a college athlete too and it kept me pretty fit but that cafeteria food..ugh...Talk about unhealthy choices staring you in the face every day! Anyway when I got out of college and started coaching was when I started to gain. I applaud you for getting a handle on it now. With all the running you will do in soccer just a little healthy eating should get you right where you want to be.

Is there any way you can pack your own lunch? I know that you probably don't have a full size fridge but you could get what you need for the week and pack it. ? I don't know just a suggestion. props to you for getting back in shape BEFORE it gets out of hand. . if only I would have been that smart. .LOL. .I thought I was invincible HA HA

Good luck sounds like you are off to a great start!

Wow! It's been about 20 days since my last post. I feel like such a slacker!

Well, any way...I have had an interesting last couple of weeks. I got really really sick for a while, which is very uncommon for me. I guess I should have expected to get sick living in the dorms, but I am stubborn. :) My tonsils are still swollen, but last weekend they were so swollen they were touching, and they had white blisters on them. I also had a fever of 103, a killer headache, and absolutely no appetite (not that I could have eaten with the state of my throat). I lost about 5 pounds in about 5 days. I think I have put some of that back since I went a little crazy when I could finally eat! haha So Iim guessing I'm around 145 now.

I'm trying really hard to get at least something in me for breakfast. Today, I had 2 Nature Valley Oats 'n Honey bars. I also had lunch, which was a chicken salad sandwich with lettuce on wheat bread, a bag of baked doritos, and an oatmeal raisin cookie (my favorite :)). I love eating in the Science Center because it is so easy to get something healthy! I've discovered that chicken salad is my new favorite sandwich!

I've decided that it is going to be too difficult for me to count calories the way that I used to, so I'm just going to have to eyeball everything. Hope this works!

Still have to work out for the day. Today is a "soccer racquet ball" day, which means that I will have to sign in and say that I have played soccer in the racquet ball courts, done abs, and plyos. I might actually do these things, but this IMO isn't enough, so I'm going to hit the fitness center too. Maybe some ellipticals or a little run on the treadmill, depending on how crowded it is.

Also, I love lifting! Wicked Wednesday is my favorite day of the week now because we lift. I can actually see some muscle building in my arms! I have never had any meat on my arms because soccer obviously requires little to no upper body strength. I love it! I'm possibly going to use the machines in the fitness center to do some lifting before my cardio today and then again on Friday.

I think that's all!

Alright so...another little update for today.

Dinner for tonight was some kind of chicken with herbs and spices, about a cup of corn, some herb potato wedges, a small plate of pasta salad with lots of peppers in it.

Then I worked out. 40 minutes on the elliptical. I was up to level 12 for the last 2 minutes! That's the highest I have ever gone. And then I decided that I wanted to do some upper body, so I did lat pull-downs, and some bench press machine thing, and then some other upper body machine. haha I should probably get the names of those.

But I think I burned around 550 calories, and when I got back I had a small banana with a tablespoon of peanut butter. :) Yum.

Just got back from my Tuesday morning conditioning. I got a decent workout in. We did some sprints and some other running drills, but the most fitness came from 2 short games of basketball. I have never played the sport before in my life, so it's a nice change.

I made a good decision today and skipped the CDR to instead go to the science center. I got my chicken salad sandwich, a bag of baked sour cream and onion chips, and an oatmeal raisin cookie. Sounds pretty familiar.

So, now I am just hanging out until my 2:10 class. Probably gonna take a shower, but it's hard to get motivated to do that when I know I have indoor tonight. :/ Oh well...

I will be back later tonight to do an evening update. :) Hope everyone has a good day!

Recap on the day...

Exercise
Team conditioning...I'll say I burned about 350 calories just to be safe.
Indoor soccer game...around 20 minutes...maybe 150 calories.

So I burned around 500 calories today.

Food
Breakfast - Nature Valley bars
Lunch - Chicken salad sandwich, baked chips, an oatmeal cookie
Snack - Nutrigrain bar and some cheezits
Dinner - Salad (spinach, carrots, cheese, red beans, honey mustard, and a sliced up chicken patty from the grill), and the broth of Italian Wedding Soup (the sausage looked gross).
Snack - Cup of fruit (strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple, honeydew)

Overall happy, but I would like to be burning more calories than this.

Tomorrow is Wicked Wednesday! haha and I'm excited. I'm trying to decide how I want to go about doing my cardio. We lift at 5, which means that my friends will all go straight from the gym to the cafeteria for dinner. I might go a little early, like 4:15, and do about 30 minutes on the elliptical. Yup, I think that's what I'm going to do. Can't wait!

Another interesting day.

Class was just class, but then I came home and fell asleep for a few hours like usual. My roommate came in, and said "Kris, sleeping again. You've been sleeping a lot lately." So I kinda jokingly said that I might have mono. Then I got to thinking about it and decided to look up the symptoms since I had such a severe sore throat/fever last weekend. As I'm looking down the list of symptoms I find one that says, "Rash when taking Amoxicillin. Oddly enough, I have a rash covering my whole upper body, and I was given Amoxicillin last weekend for my throat. Awesome! So I went to the health center, and they drew some blood to get tested. I will know tomorrow if I have mono. :( Let's keep our fingers crossed that I don't, however.

I'll write more about my day later. I need a shower very bad right now.

Hey there! :waving: I used to play soccer too!! We have a lot in common :) But not nearly as long as you, i gave it up in middle school. Great job though, it's great exercise!

The past 2 days have just been okay. I need to step it up a notch for sure...

Tomorrow I am going to work my ass off...no excuses. I'm working out at 3, and I am eating healthily all day. Period.

My summer has officially begun.

I got home from college earlier today, and I will be wasting no time. Tomorrow, I am waking up at 10:30 am, having a bowl of multi-grain cheerios, and going on a run.

My mom and my brother have been doing really well with their diets, so there is basically nothing bad to eat in the household...thank god.

I weigh around 141 pounds, which completely shocks me because I haven't been eating well at all. I've been running a tiny bit but nothing big.

My goal is to be down to 130 by June 13th, which is 1 month from tomorrow. I know it's achievable...I have done it before.

Can't wait for tomorrow.

Well, I woke up a few minutes ago, which means I woke up at about 12:30. HA!

So I missed breakfast and my early run, but I'll be running soon. Need to get something in me first.

I weighed myself though, and I'm at 139.4. :) That makes my goal even easier.
