multivitamins - effective?

I normally take three vitamins a day: centrum, 500mg of calcium, and a vitamin C pill. However, i've heard that these are just placebo pills. Is this true? how effective are these vitamins? do our bodies actually absorb them?

Yes, multi vitamins do work. You are taking Centrum though, which is not the best. This is just a very basic brand that absorbs semi well. Try this experiment...drop you vitamin into a glass of vinegar and watch how it dissolves. Vinegar is close to the same PH as the stomach.
The best is to take a 3 a day vitamin complex. This is due to the fact that even with a good vitamin, you don't absorb all you need in one pill. With a 3 a day you can take a vitamin with every meal. This increases your body's absorbency to 65% instead of 15%.

Excellent vitamin complex above.

some make the case that everyone should be taking a multi because our foods are being depleted of vitamins and minerals. :)

Actually, most people do not have a perfectly balanced diet, including me. A vitamin supplement helps to level out the deficiencies.

When looking for a multi-vitamin (I prefer a 3 times daily with a meal type vitamin), try to look for a special men's formulation. The reasoning behind this is that men's formulations are free of iron. Elevated iron levels in men has been linked to increased risk of heart disease. Eat meat and dark-green vegetables and you'll be iron fortified enough.

To answer your question, they are not placebos. Although I'd agree with the replies so far. Find vitamin supplements that are taken multiple times a day. I take Source of Life for a multi and then take an Omega-3 Fatty Acid and Glucosamine for my joints.

If you don't mind me asking, why the calcium and vitamin C? Aren't you getting enough in your regular diet?
