This is my first day of my diet, and I plan on updating this as much as I can. I started the diet because I have been overweight my whole life, and really just want to be average sized, and in shape. I've always had a problem with over-eating. My mom was a single working mom, and was always bringing take out home. She let me eat just about whatever I wanted in portions, and things just kind of spiraled down from there. Here I am at 260lbs and only 19 years old.

My biggest problem so far is eating well in my current situation. I've tried portioning off my food at school, and it went well today, but I am not sure how to count how many calories I have taken in. I also have a major problem with binge eating that I am trying to overcome. Even if my stomach hurts, for some reason I feel like I still need to eat. I'm hoping that feeling will go away once I get into more of a regiment.

My current goal is to lose 95lbs. That would put me down to 165, and give me a BMI of 23.7. I'm not too sure about my exercise regimen yet, if anyone could offer any tips that would be great. I have good access to a gym and a pool. And there are plenty of great trails to hike around here. I just need to get myself motivated and start exercising. I really hope I can stick to this diet, I have occasional chest pain, and that is one of the main causes for going on this diet. I know the older I get, the harder it will be, and if I don't do it now, why would I end up doing it later?

If anyone has any dieting tips, for low budget college students that would be great :).

Hi and Welcome to your Journal.

If you are having Chest Pain, get thee to a Doctor! You should do this before embarking in an exercise regimen. That said...

It's good that you tackle this while young as it gets no easier as you get older (and bad habits become deeply etched in your psyche).

Are you on the College meal plan? if so smuggle snacks out in your bag for between meals. As often as you can, eat simple foods without more than three ingredients. (A chicken breast is a single ingredient, for instance) This does two things, it keeps you away from lots of sauces and other sources of hard to track calories and it makes calorie counting simpler.

I really think that calorie counting is an important thing until you are an expert at estimating how much food is appropriate for you. You can log it all in at FitDay or other places on the web.

Logging in daily calories also has the effect of allowing you to critique your food intake for the day. Say you eat a bag of chips that costs you 200 calories. At the end of the day you will see that those empty calories were 15% of your total! What a waste! You could've better used those calories with fruit or veggies or meat or even ice cream!

Ideally you will be working to change the way you regard food and the way you eat permanently, for if you do not make permanent changes, you will have to revisit weight loss every so often throughout your life as I have.

Learning about the energy value of food and the energy costs of exercise and how to balance these to arrive at a healthy weight is the key to lifelong weight management.

Good Luck on your Journey! Post Daily, we're here to help! Helping you helps us all too!

Thanks!

Thanks a lot for the ideas and support. I was thinking about smuggling bananas or apples out of breakfast to have mid morning. I'll go check with our school doctor tomorrow, and hope for the best.

I'll update this as much as I can, and I hope you reach your goal as well :D.

Hi Marsh!
Welcome to the forums. The information on the boards is great and the support from everyone is fantastic as well. Starting a diary is a good start. It is important starting out to keep a food journal and track your calorie intake. I use an online calorie counter through Self magazine, but there are plenty of free ones out there if you surf the boards a bit I'm sure they're listed somewhere. Check out the recipes section as well for quick easy and cheap meals.
Starting an exercise regimen can be confusing. Walking and swimming are great starts. If the gym has someone there that can show you around that would be awesome as well. Pretty soon exercise will be a part of your daily routine and you'll feel crappy without it.
We're all here to help each other so keep us updated on your progress.
Best of Luck!!

Hi Mscase! I agree with Dcarr, chest pain is serious and should be checked out by a dr, even if it ends up just being indigestion its worth the trip. Also, a few tips on eating healthy at college, ditch the late night parties! it may be cool to hang and party but alcohol is empty calories and lots of them and those late nights and early mornings lead to energy crashes and binges. also, get plenty of SLEEP! I find that I snack alot late at night so going to be really early not only curbs munchies but a well rested body burns calories and fat better. Also, DRINK lots and lots of WATER. at least half your body weight in oz a day (example: I weigh 180 lbs so I should ideally drink 90 oz of water a day: 180/2=90). Good luck!

My first day

^Thanks so much you CatsMeow and Kaplooie :D, it is so great to have support from people. I also put my drinking days past me in high school, so I should be ok, I am not too much of a party person anyway.

So, today began my first "official" day (yesterday I started about half-way through the day). I've made a doctors appointment for Monday, and until then I am going to do some mild exercise. I plan on taking an hour long walk tonight, and swimming tomorrow morning. I know I am not going to see instant results, but I have already been feeling pretty good today, in mind and body.

I really think I can do this. I went to the gym today to check things out, and ordered a scale. Things are definitely looking up, and for the first time this week, I genuinely smiled :D.

Food I ate today (Not too sure about how many calories...)

Breakfast:
-2 bowls of cheerio
-A banana
-2 glasses of water.

Snack:
-A banana

Lunch:
-A wrap consisting of turkey, lettuce, provolone cheese, and yellow mustard. (only ate half of it)
-approx. 10 fritos
-Salad, 1/2 spinach leaves, 1/2 darker lettuce. With banana peppers, 1/2 a tablespoon of italian dressing, chick peas and 5 croutons.

Mid afternoon snack:
-Wrap(Other Half)

Dinner:
-Fajita Wraps (Vegetarian)
-Salad (Same one as lunch)

I'd like some critique on this day of meals, not sure if I am eating too much of something, or not enough, etc..

All input would be great! Thanks everyone!

Hey Marsh!

I am also a newbie here, also around the same age and also trying to lose a lot of weight :) So, count on me if you need any extra support because we're doing a quite similar thing.

How are you feeling today?

I'm doing well, thanks :D. I just finished my walk, and have not had any cravings for food. In fact, I have felt really full all day. I can't wait to start an actual regime though.

How have you been feeling today?

hey there m :)

hows it going? Im only a year older than you, and am also in the 200's weight wise. Glad to hear your not having too many cravings. Cravings were hard for me, cause im at home ALL day...so its so easy to walk into the kicthen and grab something bad.

Im slowly getting everything in order and im trying to stick by a varied meal plan which is helping me.

Anyway thought id say hello in your diary, i hope your weight loss goes well ! Keep us updated

Progress for 9/8/07

Alright, day two and I am still feeling alright. I didn't have too much to eat today, mainly because the school didn't have very good food. What did eat I only ended up eating small portions of. I haven't had any real cravings, but I did have to will myself to skip a "dessert party" the school was having tonight. My main problem so far has still been wanting to eat, even when I am full. My stomach will feel full, but my mouth still wants to eat something. It's kind of challenging to ignore it.

I also got a bit of exercise in today. I took a walk into town (about 2 miles) and then back. I had to brave "the hill" (This MASSIVE hill you have to take to get to the college) and felt much better after doing it. All around, it has been a decent day :D.

Foods Eaten:

Breakfast:
-1 glass of water
-A bowl of cheerios
-One slice of breakfast pizza (2" wide and 4 1/2" long. Pizza bread with Salsa on it and srambled egg + cheese)

Lunch:
-1 glass of water
- Salad (1/2 spinach, 1/2 dark lettuce, kidney beans, small amount of feta cheese, banana peppers, 1/2 tablespoon of ceaser dressing)
- Tofu breaded in something... (vegetarian) with rice and a small amount of sweet and sour sauce.
- Half a spoonful(large spoonful) of cottage cheese

Mid-Snack:
-Hummus sandwhich on Whole wheat bun
-1 glass of water

Dinner:
-1 glass of water
-Spring Roll
-Zuchinni and Squash Medley
-Salad (With a small amount of turkey, Garbonzo beans, feta and 1/2 tablespoon of ceaser.

After Dinner Snack:
-2 Crackers with two small squares of cheese

Hoping tomorrow will go well!

-Marsh :D

I did pretty bad today on food. I didn't really cheat or anything, I just didn't get enough in some areas, and too much in others. I woke up late, so I skipped breakfast (It doesn't start until 10 here on weekends anyway). There wasn't really anything healthy to eat for brunch today either, so I had to go for the sandwich. I'm still having some trouble with the school food. There is never really a big selection, and it can get very hard to choose what is better for me, for instance tonight we had Shepherds Pie or Buffalo Wings... I thought about getting a sandwich, but they ran out of bread in the self serve deli.

For exercise, I did an ok amount today. I hope I can get more exercise in after I go to the doctor on Monday, but for now this is good. I played frolf (frisbee golf) which was 12 holes, and can get pretty grueling (The course puts you over plenty of tall hills and through the woods). I saw it as more of "hiking while trying to get a frisbee in a basket". And then I took a walk after dinner for a short while, and plan to do 15 pushups, and 50 jumping jacks tonight.

Haven't done too much today, just not that productive of a day. I'm hoping tomorrow goes better both food wise, and activity wise.

Here is my list of food for today...

Lunch:
-Sandwhich(White bun, 2 slices of cheddar, 2 slices of roast beef
-A bowl of crispix

Mid snack:
-Nature Valley Granola Bar

Dinner:
-Small portion of Shepherds pie
-asparagus
-a bowl of crispix
- One small peanut butter cookie

I hope everyone else is doing well!

-Marsh

Hi!! I'm a newbie myself so don't have much in the way of advice to give ya but wanted to say WTG for taking the first step now instead of later in your life.

Hey Marsh!
Stopping in to check up on ya. Looking good!
You might want to check out FitDay.com. It's a good place to start tracking your calories and exercise. Keep up the good work!:D

Thanks alot for the site CatsMeow, I have already started logging my food stuffs on it :D. And thank you very much hijabigirl1973 for the support!

Alright, so today didn't go too bad. I got my exercise from walking down that damned hill, and back up. I also solved my problem with the schools meal program. I just bought some lean cuisine foods for the weekend when they have brunch, that way I can still get 3 meals a day. I didn't eat badly today, and I got some exercise :D! Tomorrow is my doctors appointment so I am going to be able to start lifting weights after that.

Meals today:

Breakfast:
-Bowl of crispix
-glass of water

Lunch:
-Leancuisine deep dish mushroom & spinach pizza (310 calories)

Dinner:
- 9 french fries
- Stuffed pepper (vegetarian)
- Small piece of baked ham

My thoughts for today: I had some cravings, and late night is back up... (Late night is a snack shop they open from 8:30-11 around here... Mostly only fried foods) I keep wanting to eat the jalapeno poppers, but I also know they are my worst enemy. I know after a while, I won't want them anymore but for now... It's really hard :drooling:.

Hope everyone else is doing well!

-Marsh

Hello and welcome.

I hope your doc takes you seriously wrt to your chest pains. Looking forward to hearing the outcome.

Update

Thanks for your concern Steve. I just came back from the doctor, and she said it is most likely asthma related. I am still going to check with my family doctor, once I go home for vacation in October, just in case. She said the best possible thing I could do to make my asthma better, and hopefully get rid of the chest pains is to lose weight (I knew that already ;) ). The on nice thing about it is she is willing to meet with me once a week, and check my food log, and weigh me in to see if I lost weight.

Even better, she said that there was a woman up at SHAPE (The schools gym) that was to be a personal trainer for students who want to lose weight. I really hope that works out, because I will have someone to push me.

I'll post my food log after dinner. I just wanted to give an update on the doctor situation, and the good news. Although I will still be coming here plenty :D.

Alright... I forgot to put up last nights meal log, but... I forgot it already :p. Oh well, I know I didn't eat anything too bad, in fact I don't think I ate enough yesterday.

-Banana

Lunch:
-"Veggie Sandwich" essentially grilled veggies in between two slices of bread.
-Steamed Zuchinni
-Broccoli
-Tuscany chick pea soup

Mid-Snack:
-Hummus Sandwich

Dinner:
-Small portion of chicken and dumplings
- 6 french fries
-water

Nothing too special tonight. And not too much to report either :D.

Lunch:
-small amount of french fries
-Steamed squash
-Turkey burger w/ cheese

Dinner:
-Mashed potatoes
-chicken w/o skin
-Some vegetable... I forgot already XD.

After dinner snack:
-granola bar

It seems like things went well today, but if you think there is anything I can do without, don't hesitate to tell me. And I finally get my scale this weekend, wooooo!

-Marsh

Been a bit of time since I updated, but it has been an awful week. I got sick on Tuesday, felt better on Wednesday, and then felt completely awful on Thursday. Friday, I started to show signs of improvement, but at 4:30 in the morning, some idiot decided to set a trash can on fire. I was out in the rain for about 15 minutes, and then they moved the students to the cafeteria for another 45. The cold moved to my chest, and I have been an absolute wreck. Friday I had one slice of cheese pizza (friend of mine dropped it off because he knew I was sick) and I can hardly remember what I ate from then on. I figured if I didn't get on here and write it up today, I would just getter further behind, so here I am.

Breakfast: Bowl of rice krispies

Lunch: Ham sandwich with cheddar cheese, and lettuce

Dinner: Penne a la Vodka (So delicous) and some rotisserie chicken.

Not too much to eat today, but then again I haven't really felt like eating.
