Lettuce said:First, it's Asian culture. Oriental is a type of rug. The Orient (Orient - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) is the Middle East, Egypt, part of North Africa and Asia. That's a whole mess of cultures lumped into one name.
Second, it's called fantasy fighting. These people know this isn't possibly in real life, but these are just stories. You think that if you shoot a car it will explode into flames? No. It doesn't. You think that if you drop a lit cigarette into a puddle of gas it will blow up? No. It get's put out. But god forbid someone make a movie where people are jumping all over the place and "flying" over buildings. That's too much.
You get my point, that is thier version. Asian refers to the continent of asia oriental refers to all the orient. If you have ever lived there you would know what I am talking about.
And yes you can shoot a car and make it explode, there called tracers and like the other guy said try droping a cigarette into a puddle of gas and see what happens.
Action (rather kung fu/karate) movies are nowhere near as good as they were in years past. Nowadays all we have Jet Li and Jackie Chan, which use a lot more cables and special effects. The 80's and 90's brought us stars like Seagel, Van Damme, Norris, Cynthia Rothrock and Michael Dudikoff. These previous movies I think were much "better" in terms of the martial arts involved. What do you think? Remember Under Siege and Above the Law, every person that Seagel came into contact with had a broken arm or leg. Great for movies.
Anways, what do you think of movies today with movies of this previous era (those that are old enough to remember), and who was an actor/actress that you enjoyed to watch?
The 80s had terrible ma movies. They are fun to watch, but also painful at the same time. They contain mostly roundhouse kicks and terrible acting. At least modern ma movies have some semblence of acting skill.
Tony Jaa is probably the greatest ma actor of all time. Ong Bak, Tom Yung Goong (The Protector in America) are absolutly incredible. Tony Jaa did every single stunt by himself, without cables or computer help.
There is a new Thai actress said to be 10x better than Jaa Parnom. I am unsure of her name, but she is staring in a movie soon to be released in Thailand. The locals were going crazy about her while I was there. She 19 years old. Going to be great.

Uhmm, no there isn't....
Anyone know if Tony Jaa is releasing any new films anytime soon?
They are filming Ong Bak 2 at the moment but he hasn't done anything for a while except at TV commercial for a car company
Uhmm, no there isn't.....
It's called "Chocolate" and comes out in Thailand on Chinese New Year.
Its called Chocolate because the girl always eats chocolate while she watches ma on TV. She learns how to fight by watching the actors fight and fights her "fathers" gangster friends.
