MOst appropriate equipment for a new fitness club

Hi buddies,

I m planning to open a fitness club soon and busy with the business plan. However, i dont have enough knowledge on the necessary equipments. What is vital, what is optional, what is scrap?

I also need good advice and experience. The place will be about 500-1000 m2regarding my predictions on my budget. DO yu think that this area is enough for some weights and 2 saloons for training such as aerobics, yoga etc or what shall it be?

All contributions are welcome :)

Have you designed the layout of your place with measurements? If not I would do that.

For equipment, I would get stuff that can be used for as many exercises as possible. Your main business is going to be the weight loss crowd, and they will want things like treadmills, bikes, and elipticals.

For the weight area, look into bench presses (obviously), power racks, etc. People can do everything with a power rack, including put the bench in there to perform presses.

take a look at the demographics of your area (gym area and city) ... that may help you cater a bit easier to. if there is another gym close by, do some scouting ... most places offer 1 free trail day ... or, invest $5 on a day pass ...

The type of equipment people here prefer to use at the gym may be different from what the seasonal gym customers tend to use, and what gyms as businesses tend to prefer.

Tredmills,
Bikes,
Rowing machines,
Pull up bars (May have one on a cross bar between some weight machines),
Dumbells (Wide range of weight),
Barbells (Wide range of weight),
Adjustable incline benches,
Step machines,
Weight machines,
Mats (Sit ups etc.),
Exercise/medicine balls,
Weight/BF%/Height measuring machine,

Just a few ideas. There's a lot more equipment people would look for bodybuilding etc like squat racks, hopefully other people will able to help you out with a decent list for common equipment.

I agree with everything written above.

I want to second and emphasize the point about knowing your demographic target! This is critical for getting your place off the ground, including the choice of equipment.

Who will your clients be? What will you offer that they can not get somewhere else?

Are you filling a need by opening a gym in an area in which there are not many choices for residents or people who work nearby? If so, then who are these people?

Are you going to try to attract a particular crowd? Hard core lifters? Fighters? Sport-specific training athletes? Senior citizens? Women? Teenagers?

Do you plan to have any classes offered or other training services that would be of interest to a particular group?

There are some 'basics' that any gym is gonna need, including cardio machines, free-weights, racks, and some weight/cable machines. But how many & how you spread it out has everything to do with who you envision actually using this gym!

Best of luck to you in your new venture!
