Moabnuts diary

I came home from taking my wife to the airport and went running outside. It was one of the best feelings Ive had in a long time. I ran about 2.5 miles and it felt great! When I was done I had a huge smile on my face. It was already dark when I got there but it was still warm enough to run. I think that was a major step in my diet. I know Ive been running on the treadmill, but its just not the same thing as running outside, feeling the air rush by me and observing my surroundings as I run. This weekend was a perfect example of why I have been busting my butt on this diet. I wouldn’t have fit in my new kayak at 280 lbs, and I certainly wouldn’t have been able to run along a river. This is the runners high. This is why I diet, this is why I run. It feels so good its indescribable. Today was a good day, I love my life!

I ran my 3 miles today. It was a successful jump from 2 miles. I finally calibrated my pedometer. Evidently I ran about 2.6 miles yesterday…a bit better than I had thought. Today’s run was on a treadmill though. It was real windy today so I couldn’t run outside. I figure most of my workouts will still be indoors until it gets a bit warmer. Also I ordered a new MP3 player today, I had been using my PDA, but I have to rest it in a cup holder, I cant run with it, so I ordered a small one. I started a anesthesiology rotation today, its making it hard to stay on my diet. I jump from room to room and you cant have food in the OR of course so I have to go hours without eating.:( Im so tired from standing all day too… it was really hard to make it to the gym, I just wanted to sleep. I just ran my 3 miles and didn’t lift weights like Id planned on doing. I stayed on track calorie wise though.

I did a super long workout today to make up for mild workouts the last 4 days. I had awesome workouts…kayaking and running outside…but I failed to lift weights and my # of calories burned was pretty low compared to my normal. Today my workout lasted about 2 hrs 25 min. I ran my 3 miles on the treadmill, then I did the elliptical for 1 hour. The rest of the time I was lifting weights. It was by far the longest workout I’ve had in a long time. Total calories burned I estimated to be 1,970. Needless to say, Im tired, but I feel great. Hopefully this workout will really help my weigh-in tomorrow!

Hello Moab! Thanks for stopping by my journal. I was just reading through yours a bit. It's so nice to have some male energy in here! It sounds like you are really doing great with the exercise. Keep it up.

I also see that you are a doctor! I've been wanting to ask a doctor what they thought about taking digestive enzymes? I just started taking those along with Coconut Oil. I've already noticed a difference in the way I feel after eating. I need to take them for a while though to see long term benefits. I bought the Natural Cures book and found the chapter on weight loss to be very interesting. Have you by chance looked into it? I was reading that taking some apple cider vinegar can remove fat cells from the body? Anyhow, I tried that and it burned going down. ack, then my stomach was in knots. lol

Anyhow, I'm glad to see you so motivated and working hard. I am looking forward to hearing about your progess. Congratulations on the weight you've lost so far.

Hey MissJellyBelly, thanks for stopping into my journal as well. I have to tell you though, Im just a medical student, not a doctor. I have over a year of schooling left, then a residency after that, so Ive still got a long way to go. As far as digestive enzymes, I don’t know much about them. As far as I know the only one that will really helps a person with a healthy GI tract is beano because we don’t have the enzymes to break down some of the products in beans. Native bacteria in your gut do have these enzymes and will break them down if they get the chance… they “breath” off CO2 like we do and this gives us gas and makes us feel bloated. Beano helps you break beans down before your GI floura do. All the other enzymes are for people with enzyme deficiencies such as lactose intolerance. You can take lactaid (lactace). Other enzymes for fats, starches, and proteins should be in plentiful supply in your GI tract so you don’t need to take supplements, though I cant see how they would hurt. There is not much evidence to support vinegar as a supplement to help you lose weight. Vinegar is an acid and can add to the acidity of your stomach, which has enough acid considering how many people take meds to reduce acid. Coconut oil?...again, little to no evidence, besides do you really want the extra calories in a pure oil? Fish oils are good though. These are all alternative type ideas for the most part and are out of my realm to be perfectly honest. I tend to be proud of the fact that I tend to think “out of the box” but I have been minimally impressed with alternative medicine in general. It just seems to be a way for someone to stick another hand in your pocket. But I do take garlic and niacin for cholesterol so Im not anti-alternative medicine by any means. Sometimes you just have to see if it works for you. A good source of medical info that seems to be unbiased and reasonably reliable is www.WebMD.com. Ive seen this site used for research by many students. Good luck!

I havent done crap since my huge workout the other day. I come home from work and just crash. My diet has been fine, but I havent run in 2 days. I gave it a good effort today, but I ended up talking to my room mate here until the gym was about to close so I didnt make it. Tomorrow will be another story for sure.

OK, I finally made it back to the gym. I ran my 3 miles, and did elliptical for 30 min. Then I lifted weights for 20 min. Ive lost another couple lbs in the last few days even though I haven't worked out much but I haven't eaten much either. Ive had pretty rough days so I just come home and crash. You don't eat when your sleeping. Ive had a tough time trying to eat every hour too. I'm rotating in surgery and I just cant get back to the lounge every hour to eat my food. Yesterday a rep brought bagels and donuts....they were mighty tempting, but luckily he brought some fruit too so I had an apple. Ive been charting my weight loss this whole time...looking for metabolism changes, trends, and just for fun. I thought that my weight loss may be slowing down, so I did some math and found that I'm actually speeding up! Probably because I'm eating the same and I have been bumping up my workouts. This is the fastest most effective diet Ive ever done. I am almost 1 month ahead of what my weight loss goals were with no signs of slowing. Its a good feeling.

Geeze! You people are such huge.. HUGE inspirations!

Looks like you are doing fantastic with SO much working out! Sheesh. I'm getting tired just reading about all of the things you do rofl. :D

Hey Amunet, thanks, its cool to be inspiring. The working out that I do came on gradually, it wasnt a "suddenly I working out for 1.5 hours" thing. I started at 30 min cardio a couple times a week and worked up from there. Working out can be an addictive thing. If you work out about 5 times a week for 3 weeks Ill bet that you wouldnt be wanting to stop. There of course are plenty of days you dont want to go, but you wont want to stop. Give it a shot.

Hey Moab, thanks for the info on the oil, enzymes, and cider. I'm still on the fence as to if I can tell a difference. I agree about getting ripped off in the pockets. I got jipped on my coconut oil.

You're doing so well. What are you eating food wise? I see the pounds just melting off you. Keep up the great work.

I write down everything I eat, and have done for almost 3 months. Ill tell you whats been on the menu this week:

Chicken Stir fry (really good and I can make it under 200 Cals)
apples
strawberries
Del Monte Lite (50 cal fruit can)
pickels
coffee with creamer and splenda
granola bars (1/3 at a time of the quaker 100 cal bars)
Balance bars (1/6 at a time...kinda small)
V8 juice
Tomato juice
Dannon light and fit yogurt (40-45 cals/cup)
Ball Park fat free franks (45 cals)
carrots
Beef Jerky

I try to eat 30-50 Cals/hr. every hour Im awake and sometimes Ill have a light dinner. I take the cut up balance bars, granola bars and jerky (baged 120 cals/bag) and eat those all day. when I get home I mix it up a bit with the hot dogs (little katsup), fruit and some veggies. I have the yogurt for breakfast. I eat my snacks thru lunch. I dont get too hungry very often. I try to make sure I get protein with the jerky, chicken and hot dogs (healthy hot dogs...what a concept) I take a mulivitimin and calcium too. Ive basically structured the diet like someone that had the bariatric surgury and cant eat much at a time, but eats all the time. Those people lose TONS of weight. But my calories are very low...usually between 500-1000. I also exercise a lot and I watch everything very close to make sure my metabolism doesnt drop...so far so good. I have a physiological explanation for why it works so well and doesnt drop my metabolism but its complicated...the key is eating all the time and keeping total calories very low. Its not a diet for people that dont have a lot of willpower. But the most important part of this and any other diet is watching what I eat when Im done!

haha - katsup.. I haven't head anybody use that seriously.. that's hilarious - I love it! Damn Canadians, eh? Lol.. You know you do it kind of like me.. I don't usually eat meals much anymore - just good snack every hour or so.. carrots here - 1/2 can tuna there... it's worked great for me and looks like it's lookin awesome for you too! My only problem would be stopping myself after eating a portion of the bar! You're doing awesome though - I'm going to pick up those balance bars soon.. maybe if I pre-portion them that would be a better idea.. meh - anyways just checkin' in on me buddy, hope you have an awesome weekend! Take caRE! :D

Oh and just in case anyone wants to know how to monitor your metabolism. Add up all the calories you have eaten for a period of time (the longer the better) and take the pounds you have lost and multiply that by 3500 (cal/lb) Add that # to the calories you have consumed (or subtract if you have gained weight) then divide that by the # of days you are keeping track. This will tell you how many calories you burn in a day.

(Calories consumed + Calories lost)/days = metabolism

So, if in a two week period I ate 31500 calories (2250 cals/day) and I lost 3 lbs, I would add 10500 (3lbsX3500) to 31500 = 42000 cals then divide 42000 by 14 days = 3000 cals. That would be my metabolism. I could eat 3000 cals/day and not gain or lose weight.

(31500 + 10500) / 14 = 3000

Of course its not a perfect science. Everybody's bodies treat fats/proteins/carbs a bit differently. there is a lot of controversy over that. Also I question how they came up with the idea that 1 lb = 3500 cals but I do know this; it seems to work for me, and seems pretty accurate. It shows that my metabolism is relatively low for a guy which Ive always expected. I burn (on my diet) about 2000-2500cals/day, more if I'm working out.

In a exercise physiology lab I had many years ago, they put a mask over my head and measured how much oxygen I consumed and CO2 I breathed off and calculated my daily caloric expenditure and it was some crazy # like 4000 cals/day. what a crock!, and that was with sophisticated computer equipment. This basic formula is much more accurate and doesn't require any money, just a very close eye on your calories...which I do anyway. I would really love to here if anybody tries this, let me know what your results are if you do or ask if you need help.

LOL, yeah, I stooped eating just a portion of the bar after my first day on my diet. since then I cut them up so I cant have just a little bit bigger bite or whatever. I have distinct portions so I cant cheat. it works pretty good.
