Milestones (Amy's diary)

Thank you, Cate - I did indeed! xo :)
Thanks, Liza - it got more decorated later on, when the Man Hard To Buy For went wild with chopping up bits of pawpaw and toothpicking them on. :D

Thanks, Petal! It's pretty rough - I still have the picture in my mind's eye of the beautiful one that you linked to (sigh). But I was determined to get it done, and to have it as our last course for Christmas dinner, and I did and we did - so it worked! :)

Thanks, Emily! :)

I'm not really back to "normal" life, yet, but have come here quickly to check in post-Christmas. Everything went beautifully - I gained weight, of course (pastry on the Mushroom Wellington, a lot of rich salad dressing, and oh dear, one wild gingerbread eatathon) but I'm back down to "just" overweight, i.e. under "obese", so safety nets for the win!
The Man Hard To Buy For was very happy with his second-hand records (baroque lute and Modern Jazz Quartet) and the last (I hope) of the gingerbread houses was made and delivered yesterday.

Today, I'm just off on a nice long city walk to gardens - inspired by several others here, I'm starting my 2020 year of healthy living early. (There will be a bump around New Year's, but that's days away - I can probably get the safety net back in place by then!)

Glad you had a great Christmas, Amy. 2020 we will all be that much healthier because of the groundwork laid down this year :)

So great that you were able to enjoy it--yes safety net is a great idea. A little fasting before to make room for a feast!

Oh yes those sound great!

That sounds lovely!

Glad to hear the musroom Wellington was a success. It sounds like you had a great holiday. Congratulaions on your 2020 early start -- here's to a great year for all of us!

... here's to a great year for all of us!
Hear, hear! :beerchug:

Only a short walk this morning, but still, a walk - about half an hour, I guess. Tomorrow, back to morning exercises!
By the way, concerning brassicas - or in particular, Brussels sprouts:
Brussels Sprouts Mandela Effect
is this true? If so, how far has the cultivar in question been distributed?

And for the scientists among you, a seasonal reflection:
Christmas Presents

I dunno: I liked small, young sprouts even ss a kid. I think a large part of thr equation is people no longer boiling them for half an hour. Boil anything cabbage-y for too long and it'll be sulphury and gross.

I should really try brussels sprouts again one day and compare. Last time I tried them probably was over 15 years ago and they were made by a good cook so when I still didn't like them then, I decided it was ok to just give up on them.
I really love most veggies in the cabbage family so would be interesting to try again. I always love the look of them. so cute and little :)

I like the concept of Christmas presents as parasites, they do seem to have drained much of my financial "blood" this year!

I don't know about the Mandela effect, it probably has some truth to it, but I liked them just as much 25 years ago as today. The bitter never bothers me much.

We had cabbage on Christmas Day, very disappointing. I like Brussels sprouts this time of year.

The gifts for Man Hard to Buy For sound lovely. Happy that your safety net also worked. Here’s to a fab 2020.

Hi Amy lovely to hear about your walks . I think all the hard work and work on our mindset has stood to us this holiday . I am sad that the theme of year is nearly ending but happy now to get back on track and whip ourselves (gently) back into shape. I still dislike Brussels sprouts but cook most days for husband . I at every one on xmas day lol

...people no longer boiling them for half an hour.
Good point! The last time I had them was roasted, no boiling involved. I think I'd even be prepared to shred them for a salad.
I always love the look of them. so cute and little :)
True! I like broccoli for being like little trees too. :D

I've never thought of them as bitter, precisely, @alligatorob - not the way some lettuces can be bitter. And "bitter" can be... not pleasant exactly, but an interesting variation, or counterpoint note, in a meal.
We had cabbage on Christmas Day, very disappointing.
Our cabbage was in a salad, with apple and pineapple, and a very indulgent creamy dressing. (only once a year!)
I think all the hard work and work on our mindset has stood to us this holiday .
Yes! it so much did! Thanks for helping me along, there. :) As for "back on track"...

...it's end of the month, and end of the year, so let's look back at the track! I didn't do badly with my December goals, and the achievements during the year, weight-wise, have really surprised me. I got to my first two major goals - to be back down to where I was twenty years ago, and then to be no longer "obese" but just "overweight' - and I achieved them not crashingly, but at a pace which i feel I can sustain.
I am not feeling terribly happy about the way I look (ie older) but so it goes. I don't feel much fitter than I was before, either, but I do have more energy generally, and more understanding of how exercise works and what nutrition I should be looking at.
Thanks, everyone, for being such an informative, lively, encouraging gang to hang around with get on the track with!

January goals: well... I'll think about them through today, and overnight, and report in tomorrow, or the day after. Meanwhile, a great NYE to you all, and even more, a wonderful 2020.
