Milestones (Amy's diary)

Congrats on meeting all your October goals so far! I agree with LaMa, please rest up lots! Mopping the floor can wait - I always find that the dirt patiently waits until I am better enough to clean it! What do you teach, and what sorts of stuff do you edit? I edit patents and make technical drawings form them and find it fascinating.

Thanks, LaMa and Marsia - I am taking it easy today - grand plans for weekend walks in the park, shopping etc are being scaled back at a rate of knots, and the floor is still unwashed. :)
Editing patents does sound fascinating; I'm editing reports, mostly, with an emphasis on environmental problems, plans and outcomes.

Oh, cool! I interned at NASA in the earth sciences division. I was just a web developer, but the people around me were studying global warming and the effects of air pollution on it. They made mathematical models of weather as a chaos system and really interesting things like that. I loved seeing all the research. Must be a really gratifying job! I also really like editing.

Glad you are taking it easy and letting the dirt have it's day!

Sounds like you're helping to save our planet, or trying to. Thanks for that! Glad you're taking it easy. Festina lente and all that.

Amy you just reminded me to wash my floor again lol. Well done on environmental reports. It's really in the news right now here .

The floor.... the floor... today, for sure! :)

I am starting to feel more myself, too, - and I slept pretty well last night, which can only be a good thing.
I've just been looking at video of the end of the sub-two hour marathon run in Vienna - such an achievement! And fascinating the fine detail of how it was achieved, how (for example) the pace-setting contingent were following a timed laser projection on the road to keep them to the exact pre-planned pace, and how the water bottles were passed to Kipchoge from bike-riders, not to lose an instant by swerving to a table and the exact amount of water he had drunk was measured to ensure his peak hydration throughout.
Of course, now that the barrier is broken the next person to do it will probably do it without such precision support - will have to, if they're doing it at an Olympics - but to see how it was done, and the joy and team-spirit of everyone involved, was both fascinating and uplifting. Humanity looking pretty darn good! :hurray:

Amy I just posted that the pressure will be on the next crew now to break that barrier. Glad you are feeling a bit better . The floor today for sure !

I always wonder how we can keep getting faster and faster and faster. Like, surely there's a peak time that can never be broken? o_O

Never is a long time. Training methods, knowledge of nutrition needs, and gear will all keep getting better. Assuming you get one ludicrously talented long-distance runner per 1 billion people we now have more of them alive now than ever before simply because there are so many people around right now. Plus as more people world wide get to have leisure time and do athletics we have a better chance of one of those super-talented people actually finding their perfect sport. So... I think we´ll be seeing people breaking those records for a good while to come, although each individual improvement may get less and less.

And now the women's marathon record has been broken - this time in Chicago, and by 81 seconds, which at that level counts as a huge margin. The new women's record-holder, Brigid Kosgei, was wearing the same make of shoes as Kipchoge (and I'm not giving anyone a free ad here, so I won't say what it was!) so my guess is the new shoes - or the style and technology which went into them - will be standard everywhere before the next Olympics.

Meanwhile, back at walking level... I'm continuing my low-level exercise regime (mostly stretches and tai chi, some knee bends, some extremely light weights). Not seeing much change but I'll keep it up for the month of October. By the way, I'm thinking ahead to November, when I want to follow a lead from Cate from a while back, and concentrate on being kind to ourselves. Anyone interested?

Yes, definitely interested in the being kind to ourselves concentration! I think it's so super important to set up good habits that don't need to be about pushing yourself hard. It seems like with exercise, starting slowly and building up slowly makes it more pleasurable and doable so you want to keep doing it. I always think of how the contestants on the Biggest Loser often gained all the weight back after the show. They didn't enjoy the process, so didn't stick with it, it seems.

I love all kinds of weightloss shows (rewatched much of "Secret Eaters" last week) and they always make me want to munch!

I think I've watched all of Secret Eaters! :) I put a review of it on the "Weight loss in the media" part of the site.
I didn't like the "Biggest Loser" kind so much - there was too much of the attack dog approach - I like Petal's rebellious streak, though, watching and eating lollies while they lectured away!
Thanks for encouragement re kindness to ourselves, Marsia and Petal. Agreed that we do need to be doing it all the time, but it does slip, for one reason or another. So I thought I'd just have some mild fun through November focussing on thinking of ways to do it - rather as we should be eating vegetables all the time but in May (or was it April?) there was a fun thread totting up how many vegetables we could eat between us all - I think we got up to 70-odd!

Amy, I remember that vegetable challenge, it was fun. I think I could do better today, I think I came in last! Why don't you start one, I'd join you if you did.
I love all kinds of weightloss shows!
I don't think I have ever watched one, somehow it seems to be people cashing in on our problem or something. I don't watch much "reality tv" it doesn't strike me as actually very real. Better to watch something that doesn't pretend to be real.

One I despise is "eat yourself sexy", especially the British version where they go on about detox and cleanses (and even give people completely unnecessary enemas!). They're so insulting and mean to their subjects!

I agree really with the reality shows but kind of get hooked on some of them like that one in the jungle . Love island I watched with daughter but got fed up quickly .
I will admit one of the reasons I liked biggest loser was because I liked Bob . Guilty pleasure eh .
Amy I have your cold I feel a bit yuck but am dozing woth paracetamol and liquids so hope I can not succumb to it because I actually don’t have time . Feel like I could sleep for a year right now . Hope you are fully better now x

On the reality show thing I have to confess to watching a few episodes of naked and afraid, but not for the story line or weight loss angle.
