Mia's diary

Hey there girl =) I hadn't had a chance to read your journal yet, so I'm so glad we are in a group together - I'm SOOOO jealous about you being in school to become a chef... I LOVE to cook - I just don't have much time for it... we'll have to share some recipies!!!

I LOVE sushi too... I need to go sometime soon - maybe tomorrow?!

Good luck babe, and we'll keep each other going =)

Hey everyone, I hope all is well. Today is grocery day and I'm really excited. Yes, I'm one of the few people that gets all giddy for grocery shopping. I used to get excited for the wrong reasons. I used to think of all the junk food I was gonna buy and pig out on but this time is different. I've been looking up some great low cal recipes that I want to try and I can't wait to check out all the fresh veggies and herbs and stuff. My professor said that we as future chefs need to start working on mastering our tastebuds and training our palates as far as taste and texture. Even if you don't like it, you still might have to cook it and you need to know what it tastes like (tomatoes, blah!). So I promised myself that I would try a new fruit or veggie each month. I saw that we have a recipe section on this forum so I think as I find good and healthy recipes I'll post them for everyone.

I get so excited about grocery shopping too!!! I used to get happy thinking about all the junk food to pig out on, so I guess we ARE alot alike!! But now we have to focus on being healthy (ugh). Life is hard sometimes, huh.

absolutely, but eating healthier has gotten a lot easier. I have a goal I'm working towards and I feel like I'm not alone now.

woo hoo for grocery shopping!!! I went to Wild Oats, our local friendly organic foodstore today and spent way too much money on way too many good things =) I'll post recipies too =)

The new veggie for October is Artichokes.

Well I ended up going grocery shopping yesterday and I stuck to my word and bought a new veggie to try. I never realized how many veggies out there that I've never tasted before. I picked up some Artichoke hearts and I'm gonna put those in some salad I guess. I'll let you guys know how they were. I'm sure someone is gonna read this and say "Huh? Never eaten an Artichoke?" Normally I stick to veggies that I know I like, but I figured that trying a new veggie every month will keep things interesting and open the way for new recipes to try.

Love it: Broccoli, spinich, corn, green beans, onions, beansprouts, potatoes, cabbage, celery, sweet potatoes, lettuce

Hate it: Tomatoes, carrots, cauliflower, brussel sprouts

I LOVE artichoke... it is great in pasta too... or cooked with a chicken breast... the artichoke hearts are normally a little bit pickeled too - very yummy. I hope you enjoy it!!!

The place I go for girls night has tons of different toppings for pizza - and my fav combo right now is artichoke and sun dried tomatoes... YUM

hey sweetie... how is it going? are you getting in your water and exercise? have you eaten that artichoke?!

Definately got my water and excercise in today and I feel great. It seems like everyday it gets more and more easy, like second nature. Tried the artichokes and liked them very much. Looking forward to all the cool things I can do with them. I saw some low cal pizza recipes to try. Thinking about what November's veggie is gonna be. Eggplant? Asparagus? Hmmmmm..........

oooo I've got some great recipes for both!!! for the asparagus i have a recipie to cook them with lemon juice and butter (but only 65 cals per serving!) and then I have a bunch of recipies for some cold eggplant salads that you can make by roasting a bunch of eggplant first and then adding it to different ingredients... let me know if you are interested =)

Had a pretty good day today, except for the cramps in my belly from too many crunches. Went to the mall with a friend today and had a great time just walking around window shopping. I couldn't do any crunches today but at least I got a lot of walking in. I noticed today that some of my clothes don't fit like they used to. In fact, the jeans my mom bought me last Christmas are so big that I can take them off without unzipping them. This is a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it shows me that I'm really making progress. It's a curse because if I keep going at this rate I'll be naked.

hehehe!!! I totally know what you mean about the clothes.. I bought a few pairs of pants in august, and they are already baggy... I can't wait until I get to the point where I can just be one size and be happy with it! =) Until then, it's bargin shopping for me! If you can find a consignment store near you - try to take them and sell them there... It will help you recoup some of your losses =) I'm taking a BAG of clothes home at Thanksgiving - I didn't want to drag it on the plane... and I'm hoping at Christmas I'll be at my ideal weight, and i'm just giong to ask for a shopping spree for a present... either that or gift cards/money =)

Ahhhh! My first 5 pound challenge has come to an end. This was truly the biggest challenge I've ever had to face, the demon that has haunted me for so long. I have learned so much since I first made the decision to register here. I have learned discipline and will-power, the 2 things I was lacking for success. I have found people who can relate to me and show their support, something I didn't have until I came here. A lot can happen in 2 weeks and above all else I have learned that I don't have to settle for anything if I don't want to. I don't have to settle for the body I've had all of my life and I don't have to settle for the lying, cheating, backstabbing man that was in my life, because I thought I couldn't get someone better. I dropped the man and now I'm dropping the weight. I always thought I would always be overweight but now the future looks very bright. I'd better stop typing before I start crying. LOL!

oh honey!!! what you said above was so true and so wonderful =) I'm so glad that you made the decision to join us and I really hope that you continue to value yourself for who you are and join with us for making our whole lives more healthy =)

Thanks Katie you're a doll! You are so close to your goal and I'm very proud of you. You've truly come a long way and you inspire me to keep going. :)

My biggest challenge is fast approaching........Thanksgiving! I don't know about any of you but I'm extreamely nervous. If ever there was a time for me to fall off the wagon then would be it. Thanksgiving in my family is a Soul Food lover's paradise, turkey, ham, duck, dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, mac and cheese, and every cake and pie I can think of. Dear Lord what am I going to do? I'm gonna be around this stuff for 2 days straight. I've always been my moms food taster, ever since I was a child. I'm the one who tastes it and decides if it needs more salt or sugar. It doesn't help that I'm studying to be a chef so now my opinion means more to her than ever. I know that the white meat on the turkey is fine to eat especially since it's being baked. My biggest problem is knowing when to say when. Every year my daughter and I spend the holiday at my mom's and when I pack our bags I make sure to only grab sweats for the elastic waistband. That way my pants are stretching to accomodate my bulging belly. If someone has the words to ease my nerves during this upcoming holiday of eating, drinking, and merriment I sure do need them.

Hey Mia! Hope all is well! We're gonna get down to 150 if it kills us! Lets do it girl! You'll prob beat me there cause I've been slippin' up a bit!
