MGB's Diary: "Clean Your Plate," they said.

So I wrote this in the newbie section, but didn't get a single reply... Bah... I thought I'd place it here, since people have a tendency to read journals it seems. :)

Hi everyone,

my name's Sheryl. The other day I was just messing around online doing a google search on "weight loss before and after" for added motivation and to my amazement this site popped up. Thank goodness for google. haha

I have struggled with my weight since I was younger. I was considered "the chunky daughter." Better yet, I've always heard while growing up, "Oh that one's so cute, but she's momona." (The Hawaiian word for "fat.") Never miss, my mom and dad would interject to protect me from the "chubby bashing." haha They're great. While growing up, I always heard the words, "Clean your plate." Unfortunately, I grew up thinking wasting food was wrong, no matter what it was. Everything that went on my plate HAD to be eaten. (That was my mentality, so no, I'm not trying to blame my parents at all.)

The heaviest I have ever been was 225 lbs and I believe I was 23-24 at the time. When I was 24, I decided to start drinking Slim Fast. Religiously, I'd carry around my shake wrapped in foil for breakfast and lunch while attending school. After, I would walk home from the University of Hawaii which was about 5 miles. I ended losing about 35 lbs in a couple months. Unfortunately, I didn't even realize I was starving myself. At times I remember logging in 950 cals in a day. Needless to say, I gained 35+ lbs a couple months after. We won't even go into details about my ordeal with diet pills. Egads.

At 25, I met a wonderful guy whom I later married. For the past 3 years or so, I was yo-yo dieting and it really took a toll on my health. I am originally from Honolulu, Hawaii but have since moved to Binghamton (Southern Tier), NY. In February '07, I flew back to Hawaii for my grandfather's funeral. Due to not being able to cope with the loss, I went back to eating everything and anything in sight. By the time I left Hawaii (End of March), I weighed in at 210 lbs. (Only 15lbs away from my heaviest.) When I returned to NY to be with my husband, I decided that I couldn't go on with the yo yo dieting any longer. I busted out my BeachBody's Slim In 6 and started on March 27th.

Now, I'm pushing myself and learning this is a lifestyle and not just some 3 month kick. I'm learning to change my mindset. It's better to be "healthy" as opposed to just wanting to be "skinny." Today I joined sparkpeople.com (MsGhettoBooty there as well..) and am very happy with the program so far. I'm hoping to eventually get to my goal weight of 140 lbs by March '08. When I do reach that goal, I'm sure I'll set another goal weight. (~120 lbs, since I'm only 5'1") Any and all advice/ support is welcome. Sorry for the "essay," everyone. hahaa

Jenna,

actually you, along with a few others, have been my inspiration. :) I've read your journal on and off and it has honestly pushed me to get my arse out there and write up a journal. I have you and a few others to thank really. Oh Oh... thanks for being the FIRST to write me here! YAH, Jenna! WOOT! So being that we're so close (hehe in a month plus that is... haha) to getting our Bronze Medals in the President's Challenge, I say we have to take a pic of ourselves wearing them. hahaa! jk You're doing great, girl. Thanks for the support!

-Sheryl

Welcome to the forum.
I totally can relate to ''Clean your plate'' it was also a motto in my house but I know it was because my mom grew up poor and food was something you just didnt waste. I was never heavy as a child or teenager but I always ate everything on my plate-having an active lifestyle come to a complete stop when I became pregnant helped me put on and keep alot of wieght.
I am now trying to stay on track and respect my body and learn that food should not be used to soothe me, protect me,keep me company.....and I do not have to eat everything on my plate-nor do I push my kids to do it.You have already come along way and I am sure you will be able to meet your goal if you stay motivated. The people on this forum are great motivaters you will make it for sure!!

Jenna- Okay that settles it. If I get the Bronze, I'll take a pic and make that my avatar. hahaaa! (Well that is, until I get the silver... then gold.. ;) )

My father was raised the same way. However, he didn't actually mean I HAD to eat everything. I just took it a step further and made that my motto in life for the past ummmm 20 or so years. Well, there's really no sense in me re-living the past. Today's a new day! :) Thank you very much for the kind words and I'm also wishing you the best with your journey! You're doing fabulous so far.

Today went fairly well. The weather was a bit too muggy to really push myself. I'm not a big fan of passing out due to lack of oxygen, you know? Ha! Tomorrow, if the weather permits, I'm going to work a bit harder.

"Dumb Fat Ass".. Classic Case of Pot/ Kettle

Earlier this morning, I decided to go to Walmart to pick up some fruits and veggies for the remainder of the weekend. It was about 8am and I was feeling rather happy and good about myself. (I woke up at 5:15am to get 50 mins of jogging in.) After shopping, I decided I better use the restroom before driving back home. (overactive bladder.. yah.. it sucks.) The last time I placed my cart outside of the restroom, when I got back, someone had taken some of my groceries. I was told by one of the staff members to just take the cart into the restroom with me the next time. So, this time I decided to do just that. I looked around to see if anyone was coming before entering the restroom with my cart. When I parked the cart on the side, away from anyone's path, a lady looked at me, laughed and said in a sarcastic tone, "Yah.. carts don't belong in here." So I calmly said, "Bring it up with management. I was told it was okay." She rolled her eyes and just walked away, blurting out, "Dumb fat ass." Okay, I know that sounds uber-harsh, but here's the kicker.... this lady weighed about 300 lbs. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black on that one!!! Honestly, if this would have happened a few months back, I probably would have ended up getting into a full on argument. If anything, I felt sorry for her and well, I was still shocked, so I couldn't really say a damn thing. hahaaa!

Later on, after spending an hour sparring/ kickboxing with Sean, I decided I wasn't finished. I still had more energy. Jeez... I didn't think I was pissed off about the situation, but it kept running through my head in slow motion. I got home and threw in Turbo Jam for 40 mins of fun. "I got your 'dumb fat ass'," was my motto the whole day while working out. As I write this... I'm not angry at her. If anything, I'm just confused. What was the reason for that? Hell... I'll never know, I suppose.

Anyways, here's what I ate:

Breakfast:
1/2c blueberries in 1 serving old fashioned oatmeal.
1/2c strawberries w/ 2 slices cantaloupe and 1/2c 1%
cottage cheese (380 cal)

Snack:
1/2c blueberries, 3 Large strawberries, 2/3c Kashi Good Friends Cereal with Breyer's Light Bluberry yogurt (272 cal)

Lunch:
whole wheat pasta (1 serving), 1/2c green pepper, 2 Large mushrooms, 1 c spinach, 1/2c zucchini, 1/4c tuna (ran out of salmon), and 1/4 c black beans (mix it all together and tah dah!) (349 cal)
-side bowl of fruits: 1 kiwi and 1 peach (88 cal)

Snack:
100 cal Thomas English Muffin with 2 tbs peanut butter and 1 tb polaner's sugar free jam (300 cal)

Dinner: 2 c homemade spicy 3 bean soup
Light English Muffin with 2 slices turkey breast, an egg (Omega 3 rich) and 1/6c part skim mozarella cheese (542 cal)

Total Calories: 1841 cals
President's Challenge Points Earned: 1407 (WOOHOO made up for yesterday's slump!)

Oh and by the way, my scale "crapped the bed." :( Time to buy a new one or better yet, use the one at the gym once we sign up.

:boxing: That lady is Crazy!

Wow you got some hardcore workout today!!! Keep it up and your gonna shrink into oblivion!

you should have said something back to that lady like"sorry we cant all be as thin as you" that would of confused her. lolol people are so ignorant and you think they would think before they speak!!!! Anyways your workout is great and its good you have support at home!

Crapped the bed? I hope my scales don't crap the bed, whatever that means, lol.

It's good to see that you're putting the effort into losing the weight. Your diet looks very healthy and totally delicious!

Keep up the good work MGB, you're doing great! :)

Hahaaaa! In other words, my scale died. hahaaa Sorry for the crude term. Thank you for dropping in, Col! I'm definitely going to be dropping into your journal from time to time as well. :) Hope everything is going well for you.

ummhusayn- Okay.. first I have to comment on that statement you made about the lady at Walmart.. damnitt, if only I had you there at that moment. haha I was literally shocked with a loss of words. I assure you, that RARELY happens, but hey... it happened. I'm over it. :) Oh if you ever find that pic of your friend, I'd love to see it. It's exciting to know that I might have a twin in Italy. haha

Alrighty, so let's get to a quick workout/ meal plan:

30 mins weight training (10 and 15 lbs free weights)

Okay I just wanted to make a note for those reading my meal plan. I eat a lot because I workout a lot. (For the time being, I'm trying to push myself to burn at least 5250 calories per week.) After joining , I realized my caloric intake was too low for the amount of cardio I've been doing. It was like a LIGHT went on in my head: Crap.. now everything's starting to make sense! WLF and sparkpeople.com have been a heaven sent. (mainly because they're both FREE and NOW I understand that I don't have to STARVE! WOOOT!)

Hi Ms GhettoBooty,
Glad Ive found your diary, it answered some of my other questions!
I too am a member of the Clean Plate Club. I still am, I just put less on it in the first place...problem solved!
As for the unnecessary comment...I find people who give insults or say things that hurt usually say the things that would hurt them. So don't take it on as your issue...it is really hers. Your energy needs to be totally focused on your goals not someoneelse's issues. My advice is forget about it and remind yourself what a fantastic job you have done so far!!!
BTW....What is the Presidents Challenge???

WooT! Thanks for dropping in, Sara! :) Yah, isn't that "Clean Plate Club" a hard mindset to break? I'm also trying to break free from the "You don't have to lick the peanut butter completely off of a butterknife club" and the "place a bowl of chocolate cake batter leftovers in your lap club" as well. hahaaa!

As for the lady who gave me crap, I agree with you there. I mean I could have easily turned it on her, but what for? It wouldn't have solved anything and hell, I would have stooped to her level. It wasn't worth it. Besides, I'm over it. Her insecurities are just that. Hers.

The President's Challenge is listed in the CLub Challenges section here at the forum. For every activity you do, you are rewarded points. If you reach a certain amount of points, you earn an actual bronze medal. (with an eventual silver and gold.. woohoo!) I believe it's a US based program, but I'm not sure... you can check the site out. Myself, along with Boam and Mal have been doing the program and it motivates you to workout. :) If you have any questions, just let me know!

Well, I'm off for a morning brisk walk. Enjoy the remainder of your weekend and thank you so much for your input!!
