Alright I'll add "eat one fruit or vegetable" to my goal for today (posting a little later than usual)
Goal for today:

Dec 28, 2019
Weight: ???
1200g / 16oz / 15 mins walk / 1 fruit or vegetable

Didn't get a chance to weigh myself this morning. Also I reduced the walking goal a bit from last time.

Haha ok I ate an apple today.

Update:

Dec 28, 2019
Weight: ???
1200g / 16oz / 15 mins walk / 1 fruit or vegetable
Food: 1618g
Caloric Drink: 12 oz
18 min walk / 1 apple eaten

Good call on reducing the walk time. I walked around the entire apartment complex and it was still under 20 mins. If I had "25 mins" as a goal I probably wouldn't have bothered! Went way overboard on the food, other goals were good though.

Aiminglow that color really suits the word apple ;)

Weight / Goal for today:

Dec 29, 2019
Weight: 242
Goal: 1200g / 12 oz / 15 mins walk / 1 fruit or veggie

OK you guys are right... I guess a little fruit can't hurt anything :)

Food: 1098g
Drink: 0 oz
12 mins walk
1 Apple

Hey Rob, yup I'm measuring my intake in grams and no, I don't know what that comes to in calories. Before I joined the forums I recorded my intake each day and came up with 1300 g as an average, so I figured 1200 g was a good place to start.

That being said... it wouldn't be a bad idea to count calories for maybe a week and come up with an average caloric density value for my current diet. Then I could create a average calorie target and convert it to grams.

Update / Goal for today:
Dec 30, 2019
Weight: 242
Goal: 1100g / 12oz / 20 min walk / 1 fruit or veggie

Nudging the food amount down a bit, to see if that helps speed things up.

I'm not sure I completely trust the digital scale I'm using... if I weigh twice it gives the same result, but if I do something that uh... slightly changes my weight... and weigh again it'll give the old result. I think it has some sort of memory feature that fudges the value it shows you to give the impression that it's more precise than it is. Also... This morning I took out the battery and replaced it to clear the memory, and it read 245! Then after a few minutes it showed the a value that was closer to the original number.

Anybody have any technical advice on the accuracy of typical digital scales?

Hey Mega, I think trying to calculate your calories would be helpful, I took a stab at it for the one day you posted your food:

Breakfast:
454g cereal w/ milk 1,707

Snack 1:
28g raisins 84

Snack 2:
78g Donut holes(!) 351

Dinner:
312g BBQ pork sandwich 300
bread & butter 168

beer 150

total calories 2,760

That's not too bad for someone of your age and weight, it might lead to slow weight loss or you might not. Any loss would be very slow. However my estimates are based on a lot of assumptions, you could do much better, and you should repeat my calculations. I could be way off. Counting calories for a while will really help you understand what you are consuming and can teach you to choose lower calorie foods in a way the grams can't. For example 1 gram of apple has about 0.5 calories, 1 gram of donut holes 4.5 calories, lettuce has only about 0.15 calories per gram. I think you are doing the harder part by weighing your food, once you have the weight of something finding the calories per gram or 100 grams is easy.

Yeah you definitely have a point there, and it is going pretty slow. I'm going to count the actual calories for a week starting today. I'm already keeping a log-book so maybe it won't be that much more work...

(By the way the 500g of cereal *includes* the milk, so it's more like 500 cals, not 1700 o_O)

I think you will find that you can keep the 1,100 or so a day gram goal and cut back on the calories without feeling too hungry just by selecting lower calorie choices.

yes counting calories is a good way to allow for more quality food. You find that you can add a lot of veggies to stuff to make your food more filling and satisfying and healthy without adding hardly any calories. If you can plug it into an app that also calculates levels of nutrients you are getting in your food, things get even more interesting as you start to see where you are lacking in terms of vitamins or protein etc.
Worth it even for a couple of weeks to have a good understanding of your food choices!

Food logging apps also get easier the more you use them. I use My Fitness Pal & Tru uses Cronometer, but I'm sure there are squillions of others. I must admit I got a shock at the 454g of cereal. That would be a lot of cereal! Adding veggies to your diet would add so many nutrients & bulk without adding many calories. It will be interesting to see how many calories you are consuming on a "normal" day. Mine are always way more than I think & I am back to logging again.

I'm not sure I completely trust the digital scale I'm using...
I'm pretty sure that none of us (except maybe Tru?) have scales in our homes which would pass muster at Olympic-level scrutiny! Same for your local doctor's scales, probably - but so long as you're heading down to where you want to be, even if there's a pound or so margin of error, it's all good.

Well counting calories today has been pretty eye opening. First my update:

Dec 30, 2019
Weight: 242
Goal: 1100g / 12oz / 20 min walk / 1 fruit or veggie
Food: 1076 g
Caloric Drink: 0 oz
15 mins walk
0 fruits / 0 Veggies!

Strictly looking at my goals, I feel pretty good about today. Apparently forgot the walking goal was 20 mins, and didn't have space in my weight budget for a fruit - that being said we did buy a bunch of apples for this week :)

But there's another value for today:

Calories: 2560
So while I stayed within my weight goal, this seems like a huge amount! I'm not jumping to any conclusions right now, but I'll be tracking calories all week and will probably have to change my approach after that!

Stay tuned for further updates...
